The best tutorial I’ve found for distorted vocals. The visual ideas also help a ton, like the spitting and the cookie monster. I have to watch this every time I practice scream singing.

Actually I have a really clean girly voice and I just learned how to activate my false chord, you can loosen it up and make it work through exercises, the Distortion/Rasp Tutorial/RockyMusicStudio video on youtube is a good starting point, I watched that and some of their other videos for vocal exercises that help with that stuff. I'm having a hard time connecting it consistently to my singing though so I've been watching videos by other people to see if anyone else can explain it better. I think pretty much anyone can activate their false chords because we've all done it before when we are sick, you know when you are sick and you cough a lot and suddenly your cough starts sounding more like a barking seal? I'm pretty sure that's your false chord, and when you are sick, the more you cough, the easier it is to make that sound until you basically just sound like that every time you cough until you heal up and get better. Also, the false chord above the roof of the mouth even though the location of the false chords are in the throat.

Joan Jett is doing a totally different thing. What you guys need to learn is strohbass. It appears to be rather easy for some voices and very difficult for others. If people can't help it, it's a sign that the vocal folds are overworked. If it's hard to do, light false chord distortion ("grit") is the technique that gets closest.

Haha, at 2:35 my cat jumped up from her sleep and start searching for something to comfort it. Which means you nailed the sound... cats react to babies crying this way because it is very similar to kitten meowing.

The gargle one you mentioned works best for me. It's one i figured out on my own and it came pretty naturally, but I was always spooked that it was incorrect until now, since all the other videos I've seen this far have only addressed vocal fry and the cookie monster styles. Glad to know that my instincts were alright for the vocal chords. I've been trying the voice fry and it hasn't worked for me great. Something about it just isn't "clicking" so I'm probably going to shift my focus to getting good at the gargle technique since it's sounded better and felt more comfortable

If you watch Elvis singing in the 68 Comeback Special, he's got that raspy sound. The best example is "If I Can Dream", or maybe "Trying To Get To You". Supposedly though, it was from the constant singing he was doing and his voice was worn out. So is it that, or was it technique?! 🤔🤷♀️

Wow, thank you! Well, I came to rock singing later in life. I started out in jazz and attended college and sang in a world class vocal jazz choir. And I also sang opera. I think my looks didn't always work for rock because I don't look tough and all. lol Actually I started singing rock when a random drummer found me of Myspace. By then I had been learning how to belt so it was perfect for to get it together. I then started singing and playing keyboards in R&B soul band which was a it more comfortable to me since so much of that music came from the blues. And I randomly met Melissa Cross at the NAMM show in LA. We bonded and she sent me her material on screaming and then the next I took lesson from her. It's not really my thing but I can teach others and that was my goal.

I think a better example of vocal fry is quiet tibetan throat singing. All that pretty much is, is vibrato on top of vocal fry . I do scales with the vocal fry sound. I imagine it sounds like a dying rabbit, but it doesn't take very long, so I can fit a quick scale in, in between songs. That scale helps me get warmed up for lower and higher notes, and allows me to pick up a rattle at almost any pitch. I find you can almost catapul soundwaves off of it. Say, you've just done your warmup, haven't sung yet, encounter a high note, but can't quite reach it. Wherever I max out, I vocal fry, and continue to the higher notes. Takes some practice, since certain facial expressions and sounds can make a high note hard to hit. Likewise, it is nearly impossible to do disturbed's cover of sound of silence while sporting a massive grin. Edit to add paragraphs and save you from seeing a block of text 😂 Initial the fry was solution for supposed emotionless singing lol

OH MY GOD, THANK YOU FOR THIS! I bought both Zen of Screaming DVDs and neither helped me figure out how to do what Cross calls the "Marge Simpson," the vocal fry because the first DVD doesn't even touch on screaming and in the second one she very quickly skims over vocal fry and doesn't explain very well how it should feel, where it's placed in the body, or anything that would help a viewer understand how to imitate the technique. I've watched a ton of other people on KZbin try to explain it and none of those helped me, either. But this finally made me understand! When you said it's at the top of your throat, at the palette, the way a baby cries...that is exactly what I needed to hear to finally make sense of how this technique works. When you said how a baby cries I immediately tried imitating the sound of a baby crying and it clicked. YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER! I'm sure Cross is a great one-on-one vocal coach, but her DVDs are virtually useless for someone trying to learn proper scream technique imo without that individual attention. This was infinitely more helpful. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!

you didn't explain what you are actually doing in the first rattle, and you didn't explain much about the second one either. You didnt give any serious examples...:-/
@VocalSplendorStudios7 жыл бұрын
Hi ila, Thanks for commenting! It's really hard to explain and show how something feels. These rattles are an internal sensation, like most singing technique is. It's not like showing the exact finger position like piano and guitar. My intent is to get you to experiment with some of these variations with a sense of play, like a child does, because that is a key way to finding the feeling.
@VocalSplendorStudios7 жыл бұрын
I may be able to expand each of the rattles more in depth in a later video. I do recommend Melissa Cross's material if you want more information. To be honest, it doesn't come easy. All the material out there is just so you can find the feeling using different clues. It took me a while, with lots of practice, to be able to make these sounds consistently. And yes, I actually had private lesson with Melissa Cross, too. Sometimes things can only be taught one on one in a lesson. :/
@VIDEOHEREBOB7 жыл бұрын
Val is 100% right. You can be taught these sounds to a point, then it's up to you to configure to them and practise. It takes experimentation and I'll even go as far as to say courage because you can also spin your wheels if you under power sounds like these.

It’s very hard to put a voice into words, just try your best to imitate her sound as best as you can. I’m self taught in singing, piano and guitar and the ONLY way that I can actually learn from someone else is from examples. So if I’m learning piano, I like to hear someone else play it (cuz I can’t read music) then I just find the right chords and keys and just imitate it. And that’s what I do with my voice.

1. fry is nice, but already on the extreme end of the spectrum. 2. is completely useless. Is there any record, where this is successfully applied as a singing style? 3. false chord vibrations are powerful and versatile and cookie monster-style is not a good sounding or healthy way of applying them.

@OVI-Wan-Kenobi-83 жыл бұрын
You either naturally have it or you don't, it's not really something you can reproduce without harming your vocal chords, at least long term wise. Natural raspy vocalists include ROD STEWART, KIM CARNES, TINA TURNER, SASS JORDAN, AXL ROSE, BRAIN JOHNSON, JANIS JOPLIN. It's actually very rare for a vocalist to actually have naturally raspy vocals because it requires a certain type of unique vocal chords.
@pandasinspace87003 жыл бұрын
That's not necessarily true. Janis Joplin, for example, sang in a very damaging way. She could barely sing as she got older because of the vocal damage. This video is to show how to mimic the sound in a safe way

Neither one of these techniques is practical, especially the second, which can only be used for high-pitched falsetto screams that 80's metal singers used to do. Vocal fry, on the other hand, can be implemented in the voice but it will never be stablized or controlled. In fact, using vocal fry too much will damage your voice to the point where singing in your mix voice is bound to sound crackly and uncomfortable. The only real way to sing with distortion is by using the false chords, which requires a shit ton of stamina and a lot of control.
