Totally agree with Scott on the uselessness of the 'C-cut' as a visual aid to backwards skating. I had it explained to me with C-cuts and couldn't get it at all. What I ended up doing was watching how people skating backwards were moving their feet and hips, and I realised that actually what's going on is backwards lemons, staggered. So one leg starts its half of the lemon, but the other leg doesn't start its half of the lemon until the first leg is at the apex/azimuth/outermostpoint of its lemon. The rest is just shifting your arse about to get your weight in the right place and allow your desired range of motion. So I ended up spending one session doing backwards lemons, and then on the next session I was able to get the 'backwards wiggle' style going well.

That’s sweet! How’s the progress going? I kinda decided I wanted to figure skate after my friend showed me Yuzuru Hanyu a few days ago, honestly love Yuzuru now so much that he’s my Lock Screen. 😅 I’m trying to build up the courage to ask my parents if I can figure skate and I told my friend over text that I really want to figure skate and my parents can see my messages so I’m hoping that maybe they’ll get what I’m picking at? If not then I may make a deal with my gran to see if she can get my parents to agree to figure skating, then I’ll wear skirts.

Try to use the phrase, "push with your big toe" for the little ones. Also provide some resistance to develop the full stride perhaps by having the skater pull a partner who is either gliding forward or on their knees.

These videos are a great addition to the lessons I am taking. We have a pro locally that teaches figure and hockey skating and sometimes confuses the two or gears a lesson towards figure when he is teaching hockey. I am 38 and started playing 5 months ago, not only playing but skating in general. Next year I hope to get into one of the lower men's leagues at my local facility. Keep up the great work and thank you!

Now that I watch this video again and think back to what I've been taught not only by myself and instructors it seems so simple now. I've already trained myself to be comfortable using the outside edge and moving backward. That aside its just a matter of training my body to remember the technique. This video was a great wake up call. It's within reach I just need to take that step.

I'm thirty years old and just moved to America's Midwest (Chicago) and i've always loved hockey and been curious about learning to play. That said, I have a "fear" of skating backwards and really need to learn how to do it... but idk... everytime i try i almost fall and go into panic mode... i'm sure it's just a confidence thing because I used to have the same problems in general but it takes a lot of time to trust the blades just to go forwards. It would be nice to have time to practice on ice, but alas without being in a program or already playing hockey, public skate is it, and it doesn't really lend itself too much to idiots trying to learn to skate backwards, at least imho
8 жыл бұрын
I am 38 soon. I have played hockey at junior age (read at age of 15-17). I had 20 years break and then I started hockey officiating. Well my backwards skating was total crap. I couldn´t do cross overs and I was soo slow... Now after two years of intensive practice and 100 games under my belt I can say I can somehow skate backwards and do also crossovers. But I still have lots to do as I am willing to climb to higher levels of officiating.

I obviously have the wrong kind of skates and they don't have reverse. When I try those I pretty much just go forward. It takes me 2-3 minutes to get from one end to the other going backwards and by time I get to the end I am shot, sweating all over the place. So there has to be some movement that you are doing that makes it go backwards - not just a little step. When I do the little step trying to go backwards, I don't move at all or move forward slightly. I can partially do a cup and move backwards but it's too strenuous right now.
