If you have a Drywall Texture you want to get rid of, or a rough wall or ceiling, Skim Coating is a way to get rid of an old texture and create a new wall texture. NOTE: Click 'SHOW MORE' (or the down arrrow on mobile) below to open up the full description.
But many of you aren't that good at spreading drywall mud right? Well, here's a way to Skimcoat a wall without using a pan and a knife. You can skim coat over popcorn ceiling texture, or over any wall or ceiling texture with this method. With this method, you may need to coat it twice to get the desired thickness, but it's pretty easy to do with a paint roller and a magic trowel. I have many other skim coating videos available.

BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, and much more). kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4OwqH6VgbmEh9U You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzrkz NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.

Great job Guy! I always do it like you mentioned the way you do it with a 12 inch knife but for someone who's just starting and not sure about putting mud on with a knife that would do a fine job. I may try it on my next job just because I have never done it like that before. I had an old timer tell me once'if you don't learn nothing in a day it's a waisted day'. I have learned something from you today good Sir. Have a blessed day Guy✨

Peter Hewel No, I haven’t tried those for skim coating. We used to use knives like that to scrape the popcorn off the walls after spraying the ceiling, and they would often warp so I don’t think I would ever try them.

As someone who does skim coating professionally on texture using a 10 or 12 inch flexible broadknife after rolling on the mud scrape of all the excess firmly. Should dry in less than an hour. No sanding. Then repeat and the mud will be smooth needing only a light sand after.

The outside pointed corners of that magic trowel look mighty sharp. If you cut off the pointed corners and put a 1/4 inch radius on the ends you will find that you will end up with much fewer scratched lines in the mud that need tidying up.

This is a great video! I used this method and here's what I discovered. I did two rooms and a hallway (ceilings too...). I used a Magic Trowel, which was great. The existing texture was about 1/8 to 1/4" deep, no joke. I found that my best result was to roll on the compound *extremely* thick in the first run then get the Magic Trowel working. I put on the compound so thick that you couldn't see any visible texture after using the Trowel. I eventually started just dunking the entire roller straight into the 5 gallon bucket of mud. This method gave me a decent first coat, but it would take a long time to dry. Interestingly, I didn't get a lot of cracking, despite the thickness of the mud (I used the green stuff too). You'll read that people say to thin the mud water, and I tried that at first. It just made more work because I couldn't apply a thick enough first coat with thin compound. Plus you don't have any room in a full 5 gallon bucket so you have to take mud out, mix in water, apply a bunch, add mud back in, try to get the water mix right...ugh. No way. After the first coat was dry I would knock down the high spots and ridges with a 12" knife. I found it was pointless to sand at this stage, plus sanding would create a ton of dust, and I would have to go over the walls with a wet rag before doing the second coat - more wasted time. Anyway, after scraping off the bumps and ridges I used a 12" knife to apply a second coat. I could never get the Magic Trowel to give me a clean smooth line on a second coat so I used the knife instead, unless texture was still showing. The Magic Trowel was invaluable for a first coat base layer. Before the third coat I did a pretty quick full sanding, followed by a damp rag to get the dust. I found that if I did well enough on the second coat I could use a 12" knife to get a finish coat on the third pass. After the third pass I'd thoroughly sand and then do spot touch ups before a final sanding. One last thing to note: you absolutely have to get good at using a 12" knife to do corners. Don't tape corners using this method. Just try to get angles better with each pass. It takes practice. I read about people doing six or seven passes with thinned mud, but man, life is just too short. If absolute perfection is your goal hire a pro. Make no mistake, this is *a lot of really hard work*, especially if you have heavy texture! But by the end you'll be a lot more confident with a mudding knife. Doing a big skim coat job is a genuine trial by fire. You'll never look at your walls the same again. I was not thrilled with the mess of the roller and learned how to apply mud with a 14" knife. That gave me more control over different thinkers for different parts anyway. Also i was not sold on the magic trowel, it left little lines in my work. I got it super smooth with two passes of the 14" knife.

The magic trowel is a great tool. I like to use an 18” 3/4 lambs wool roller for application. You can run a wall quick and I like the circular pole sander. My new guys always stand straight on with those rectangle sander heads and I’ll hear it from the next room when that thing flips and gouges the wall, so I switChed to the circular heads about 5 years ago. Thanks Kilted Guy for all the great videos you have posted. I haven't seen any of the many skim coating videos out there address this question. How do you skim coat a very small piece of wall? For instance, I have a small bathroom with a door near the corner. Like the rest of the room, there is textured wall between the door and the corner but it is very small in width: maybe 1-2 inches. How would you do that part? Thanks again for helping us homeowners learn these skills!

Hi! None of my local stores had plus 3 (grrr!!) So I started looking at finishing compound instead. I wasn't sure if I should get all purpose light, or "topping" compound. Since skim coating seems to be the "finish" of the wall, I opted for the kind that said topping.. I'm about to try it out, which do you think is better and why? Or is it not much difference? Thanks!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Topping has a little less adhesion, which is why you can't tape with it, or coat metal corners the first time. So you might want to add a little woodglue if going over painted surfaces. Otherwise it will be fine. But all purpose regular or light weight would be another good choice as it has a lot of adhesion.

Do all these tools work on plaster walls that have some texture due to multiple layers of paint? Can we skim coat a metal door? Thank you!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
You can skim coat most anything that won't flex, or vibrate too much. I wouldn't try more than a very thin coat on a door. Thicker coats are more likely to crack and flake off. If you skim coat a glossy surface, sand it first with 60-80 grit to remove some of the gloss and give the mud something to bite into so it doesn't flake off.

Hi, I have question about skimming (level 5), well prep for it, or if just going L4... should all dips in the wall be floated out? For example, I hold a 12" knife perpendicular to the studs, with one end of the knife in the corner, there is 1/16th or so dip between the two end of the knife (corners not tapered out enough apparently). Do I leave it as is, or float it out.... does it make a difference to the eye? (walls will be a satin sheen) your videos and information are excellent, thanks!

You can do this with hot mud and get it all done in one day, or one wall at a time. Skim coat with hot mud, texture coat with regular mud. The moisture in the hot mud after it solidifies will help prevent air bubbles from happening while applying the texture coat. When we say "hot mud, we mean fast setting joint compound".

I have done a lot of mobile homes and I usually pull off all of the strips between the sheets and tape them and finish them like new drywall. But anyway you need to get a bonding primer like the Zinnsee Bullseye 123. Get the one that’s the best at sticking to things and then yes I would scuff sand the walls to put scratches in the walls for the primer to hold onto. Then texture over that. I still have reservations about it sticking really well but I think sort of banging into the walls a lot it should be fine. I’ve never heard of any issues with it after I completed one. What is your opinion of skim coating a heavily textured plaster wall that is over 120 years old with drywall topping or should I utilize Plus 3? We just don't like the current texture of the wall. I'm certainly not an expert in finishing drywall; however, I have always used All Purpose Joint Compound for taping and then run the additional coats with Drywall Topping.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Well I'd sand it with very coarse sandpaper to give it lots of scratches, then use regular all purpose as it has more glue in it, or Plus 3 and add some wood glue. Definitely not topping as it has very little adhesive and they even say not to use it on the first coat of cornerbead for that reason.

I used 80 grit in this example, but you could go even closer if you want. Anywhere from 40 grit to 100 grit would work. So does your handle mean you go barefoot often ? I ask because I do and I am barefoot in a number of videos. Some people think I’m nuts of course

I’m definitely barefoot most of the time, I guess it’s because I was raised by Deadheads.😂 I feel like I literally can’t breathe right when my feet are covered. My old man and I are floor contractors, and I do all the floor coating barefoot. Helps me make sure the floors are smooth!😂

Awesome. I find it funny how many people don't get how you become more aware of your foot safety when barefoot. I've been working barefoot most of the time for about 6 years now, and never more than a minor scrape on my feet. You don't become reliant on shoes to protect you. I get annoyed and yet laugh at all the people telling me to put some shoes on. Heck, most of my videos are shot in my shop/studio and it's very safe anyway. Thanks for replying. 👣👣👣 😎
