If there is no qualitative data to be found I would perhaps include a sentence to state ' there is no qualitative data associated with this database IA' - the mark is for consideration of qualitative data so imho that should cover that base. Hope this makes sense. Mr M

Hello Mr James I really need your advice, I would like to know whether an IA about the effect of pH or salinity (I haven't decided yet) on the concentration of dissolved oxygen (measured using the Winker method) is a good topic and could score high. I will have a focused RQ, and I am extremely passionate about this topic, only I'm worried that it's just too simple for HL chemistry student 😞 I could also do an IA on "The effect of phosphorus or nitrogen on the DO" Do you think these labs are appropriate and could potentially score high marks? If yes which independence variable would be best to investigate?

There is no distinction between SL and HL in IA. I think your first idea is sound.,and if done well can score well. Im afraid i am not allowed to go into detailed specifics as the IA is between student and their teacher. Good luck ! Mr M

Hi. Mr. M, due to unforeseen circumstances that happened in my country, instead of completing my lab based IA I have to do a data based one instead, at the moment I am thinking of exploring how positive and negative regions, dipole moments, chain lengths on alcohols (considering its branching as well) will affect its solubility in water... I'm not sure if that is too simple for a database IA. Please advise. Thank you!!

The best advice is to keep to one IV and extend your DV to hit the 10hrs requirements- it is best to have data processing in some way as raw data only will not score well

Would this be too qualitative, and if so is there any alternatives paths you can suggest I explore?

it is straying into biology somewhat - suggest keeping to Inter and Intra MF - it is essential to make it quantitative. Consider van der waals radius, ionic strength, polarity electronegativity as potential research and good luck

Sribatscha, You are taking a great approach by using multiple sources. I have scanned the docs but please bear in mind I am currently very busy. I don't clearly see what your aim is so I have included some ideas below. It does look like an EE as it stands but certainly has potential to make a great IA. You can convert absorbance to conc using beer lambert law - there seems to be lots of data so hope this is possible. I do wonder what the RQ is and would make the following suggestions as a way to guide you through to a great IA. 1. How is published data used to elucidate reaction mechanism? 2. What is agreement between a simulation on iodine clock and published data ? 3. What is the role of modelling in understanding auto catalysis ? 4. How is rate law derived from experimental data ? 5. What is link between lab based and natural oscillating reactions ?
