I'm a pipe smoker for almost 20 years now and subscribe to everything Brad says here. It's excellent advice, listen to it! :-) I'd just like to add some little things: 1. I prefer using a finger or thumb when filling the bowl. I think it provides a more precise feeling for how tight you fill and I think this feeling is important. But in the end every pipe smoker has his own techniques and nuances. 2. Sometimes too much ashes on top of your tobacco creates an ashy taste. If that occurs definitely tip the pipe and tap some of the ashes out. 3. Not only can a pipe cleaner soak up some of the moisture, there is also sometimes a little tobacco piece blocking the draw, you can remove it with the cleaner, too, i.e. push it back into the bowl.

For 1 I do: fill your pipe by scooping and tapping it softly on a surface or your hand to pack it. Then as you reach the rim, you put a little more into it and you press it down softly with your thumb and keeping your thumb on the opening you rotate it in between your index finger and thumb, creating a nice and even layer. This creates a fairly loosely packed pipe, but very evenly. I use gravity 😅

You say one doesn't inhale pipe tobacco, then what level of nicotine does it deliver vs chewing tobacco or cigarettes? And is the nicotine for a beginner a dizzying dose or more subtle than that? Does one get "hooked" on pipe smoking in the sense of craving nicotine where the result is a distinct time pattern of usage?

I prefer using a polished Zippo. Because at the right angle it allows me to look into the pipe like a mirror, to see how it's burning. And i'd recommend anyone to look up the breathe method. Breathe normally through your nose, slowly swish your mouth like when using mouthwash, until your mouth is filled with smoke. Great video!

Budget alternatives for newbies: ditch the $100 plus briar and go for a corn cob. If you decide that smoking a pipe isn't for you, you're out $5-$10 dollars. And they smoke fine and typically very dry so you won't need to use as many pipe cleaners. Skip the ashtray. Smoke outside or just buy a clay flow er pot for a couple of bucks in which to dump your ashes. Tobacco: In my opinion there are two OTC blends that taste okay--not great, but okay--that are easy to find, load easily, light easily, remain lit, and smoke dry. These are Carter Hall and Prince Albert. Again, they're not the greatest of tobaccos, but if you're just starting out you'll want to smoke something that is forgiving of the beginner's tendencies to over pack, smoke too fast, and tamp too hard. All told, you've spent less than $20 bucks and that includes your Czech tool and pipe cleaners. If you decide that smoking is for you, then you can move up to more expensive briar pipes and finer tobaccos. But then, I am a CHEAPASS, so ymmv.

I agree. For $15.00 - $20.00 you can dabble and get a great classic pipe experience. The material required is easily found at many drugstores, grocery stores and gas stations across the country. No online shopping and shipping lead time required. 1. Get a small Cobb (like a Missouri Pride, $7). Small pipe is best to minimize cost and nicotine for a beginner. 2. Buy a tasty over the counter tobacco blend that comes in a sealed pouch, like Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, or Carter Hall. ($5). These smoke relatively easy, don't require drying, and have an enjoyable classic flavored burleyl/Virginia tobacco taste. It's not fancy but you get the spirit of a good tobacco blend. Bradley made a great point worth echoing, as a beginner avoid the tobacco blend Velvet, Half & Half, Captain Black and Borkum Riff. Those tobacco blends are very difficult to smoke and almost certainly will burn your tongue and/or be a bad experience. #Pro tip - Repurpose the tobacco pouch as a carrying case for your pipe and 1-2 bowls of tobacco. Fits easily in pants, shirt, or coat pocket. 3. Czech tool $2 (this is optional, you can tamp with a nail head or finger just as well). 4. Small box of matches or a Bic lighter. $3 I collect artisan briar pipes but smoke cobb pipes at least 50% of the time. Some blends will taste better in a cobb and some a briar. Another really important point. Cobbs travel better. You can take the bit off at will (so it packs in a smaller space). Never travel with the bit in the pipe. High probability it will snap off. Don't learn that the hard way. If you decide you don't like the pipe experience or you break or lose a Cobb you won't fret or have regrets.

For people who wants to switch from cigarettes to pipes I will recommend Missouri Meerschaum’s nose warmers, cheap and compact, and pair with a small tobacco pouch take up about the same space as a pack of cigarettes.

I started about four years ago from SaT's original series on learning how to smoke a pipe. I started with the corn cob Country Gentleman and loved it. I've since collected several Savanilli briar pipes and they are very nice. But nothing is quite as nice at the first Country Gentleman, such a smooth smoke, I've gone through several stems, but it still smokes great. For a good introductory blend I'd recommend Dunhill's Standard Mixture, it's easy to pack the bowl, burns well, tastes great, and nicotine content is mild.

Love your videos. I do disagree regarding cob versus briar pipes. I think learning on cob is best for a couple reasons. First, they are very, very forgiving with wet tobacco. Second, it's very easy to monitor the temperature in a cob. It tells you right away when you are puffing to fast. The briar doesn't give you feedback that quickly. I truly enjoy both my cob pipes and my briar pipes.

Lol, I love how one of the first things he said was to not go for a Gandalf pipe. I’m not quite sure I would agree, although what he says makes sense. My first pipe was a Savinelli Churchwarden. For me it was a great pipe to start out on. It is easy enough to clean and because of the long stem, the smoke it produces is fairly cool and manageable. I think certain churchwardens lend themselves towards beginners because of the cool smoke. Sometimes a shorter straight pipe heats up a bit quicker which could be unpleasant to new pipe smokers. Anyway, just thought I’d help the beginners looking to unleash their inner Gandalf. For me, my first pipe was either going to be a churchwarden or Sherlock because of their popularity in books and film. The only thing I would say about a church warden is that they aren’t comfortable for clenching in your teeth. A shorter pipe would be better for that since there is less length and weight being forced down by gravity.

I have learned about how tight to stamp the bowl all on my own. Because I wanted it smoother. And smoother. And found a nice tightness that let's it smoke slow for what I was smoking at least. I do prefer floral cigars, so I'm looking for a pipe tobacco similar to acid cigars. Floral. Like potpourri

I just recently took up a pipe, nothing to fancy but a nice little Straight billiard, think I spent about $65 on it and now that I've seen your video I know I have been packing it wrong and also realized I had forgotten to purchase the most important thing, cleaners, it never occurred to me about the moisture gathering, learn something new everyday, of course it's not something you think about with cigars but again thank you for the video and I am now subscribed. think I'm going to have to try some of that tobacco you have too.

What about when you only want to have about 5-10 puffs? Do you still pack the pipe full and leave the rest for another time? Or do you just pack it a quarter to half full?
@tommy2nes
@tommy2nes 4 жыл бұрын
Tamping is so important, when I learnt to tamp properly it made everything so much easier. As you said you keep the ember in contact with the tobacco otherwise you puff and puff and all you end up doing is creating nasty moisture. Personally I would recommend pipes with 9mm charcoal filters which for me take away an enormous amount of harshness and allow me to enjoy the pipe much more and I don't think it alters the flavour too much. Also I recommend ribbon cut tobacco for a begginer.
@BlackAdder665
@BlackAdder665 4 жыл бұрын
I think for a beginner it's better to learn without a filter. A filter alters the draw and that's something a beginner has to learn. One has to choose a mild high quality tobacco, though. Exception: I smoke almost all MacBaren blends with a charcoal filter. Apparently they're meant to be smoked with one.

Just one additional info for new smokers, you may get tingling uncomfortable sensation on tongue after smoking a bowl or two. It is commonly known as tongue bite, it is caused because 1) tobacco was too wet and smoked without drying it first, or 2) you are puffing frequency is too much trying to keep it lit or to produce more smoke. Avoid it, relighting many times may be needed in the beginning until you learn the technique, but sip it slowly. Another suggestion is, limit to 1 or 2 bowls per day, may be just 1 bowl per day in the beginning until your mouth gets used to it. Lot of new folks quit pipe smoking because of tonque bite.

Very good video, sir. My only recommendation is that starting with a light aromatic is not a bad idea. Some people can hit the ground running with a non-aro, but a lot of people get into the hobby, I presume, because of dad and grandad's Cherry Cavendish. Then they can evolve from there. I suggest 1Q. It's very subtle and still a good tobacco taste. But let it dry out for a minute. Just my 2 cents.

Bradley, excellent video. I believe it covers all the basics; I say that because I just started re-enjoying a pipe when the Covid experience hit us all in March. I watched probably 20+ hours of YPTC videos because I really enjoy Cigars and was frustrated with pipes many years ago so I knew I was doing something wrong. What an educational experience was offered on KZbin. I have added to my original two pipes and now only have a total of eight but can make a rotation. Through the information given by you and some other YPTC enthusiast I have 18 non-aromatic & 9 what might be classified as having some flavoring (Solani aged burley flake) but only two are definite aromatics. I am just learning about this great addition to my lifestyle but would say that the one thing you had on your video that I’ve seen on no others, at this point, was an ashtray. That one small piece is a very helpful addition when enjoying a pipe! In any case I rambled on quite a lot but just want to say keep up the good flow of information. Many Thanks,

I'm not too fussy about the charring light. After the initial charring attempt, I have found that I can get the pipe going well enough if you tamp and puff simultaneously after you get some embers going. The charred disc doesn't have to be perfect, considering that within several minutes, (assuming you are not puffing like a steam locomotive), you will probably do a re-lit with a light tamp anyway. I have found that it is helpful to twist the tamper while you 'tamp-while-puffing'. I guess it depends on one's degree of O.C.D., lol. (I should talk, being a perfectionist for most other things, myself.)

My first tobacco pipe was a water pipe with a metal socket and metal tube.

And here I am an idiot and asked for pipe tobacco at my local cigarette shop and getting flake cause I thought it to be regular tobacco and inhaling every puff though I used to smoke white ox as a teen so I didn’t find it that harsh but dam glad I found this video now on my second go around I’ll know what to do

Have you ever had a smooth finish pipe bubble up from the heat? Got a smooth finish Peterson - two smokes in and the finish is bubbling up.

STUFFandTHINGS 999 sterling silver spigot. Beautiful pipe. Bought from Smoking Pipes. Not sure is it’s me or the pipe. My other pipes are all rough/rusticated finishes. Asked around, no answer. Guess I’ll call Smoking Pipes.

I noticed that theres not whole lot of smoke coming out, and sometimes no smoke at all after you took a draw. Is that just how you are supposed to smoke a pipe?

Don't use your lungs, use your mouth to suck the smoke in. It's like sucking on a milkshake, like Brad alluded to when checking the draw.

Hey Bradley, I'm a new subscriber. I am currently a smoker of about a pack of menthol cigarettes a day and was considering transitioning into smoking a pipe (possibly entirely instead) and one thing i would like to know is, are there any pipe tobaccos that can or are designed to be inhaled?
