I have a Kiribi lighter which looks and functions very much like an Old Boy. It has dual flame nozzles and gets dirty pretty quickly. Now I know how to get it clean. Thanks again for making this video.

Yep. A Kiribi would be very similar!

Very helpful. Thanks. The Peterson is turning out to be a significant improvement over the Old Boy: smoother more reliable action, more consistent lighting, and tighter fitting parts. The OB cap in particular starts to wobble over time. Whereas the Peterson cap appears to remain snug, which helps to preserve fuel.

Bartholomew Fotheringay-Phipps - I'd heard about some of the issues that people were having with the snuffer-cap arm on their Old Boys. That, coupled with the extra butane capacity, is what led me to the Peterson. I'm sure Old Boys are great, but I haven't regretted getting the Peterson even once. Thanks for watching!

Michael Johnston - I'm glad you found it helpful. The lighter was particularly dirty in this example, but it's usually not so involved.

M Pro-7 Is a gun cleaning solvent I use exclusively. It's non toxic and breaks down carbon instantly. It's like magic. It feels like soap bubbles and is very gentle. I know guys who use it on high end engraved shotguns with no adverse effects to the finish. I've used it on my lighters, it works great.

David Pidlypchak - Cool. I know some gun cleaning solvents WILL cause damage, so I didn't want anyone to blame me for it!

Just got one of these for Christmas so I really appreciate watching this and the detail needed. I would say that I should clean it way before it gets a build up as heavy as yours. I understand that you let it build up heavy for the demo. thanks.

John Medinger - My Peterson usually stays at home, so I use a Zippo with the pipe insert whenever I'm outdoors in breezy conditions. Works great.

+Stuff&Things are you still using the Thunderbird butane insert, or have you switched to the Zippo inserts that they sent you from your repair using regular fluid?
@stuffandthingsyoutube8 жыл бұрын
I switched back to the regular insert. The Thunderbird wasn't very reliable.

I clean my Old Boy with alcohol and an old toothbrush. Works like a charm and no chance of damaging a pretty expensive lighter.

Bradley, hello. Enjoyed your series on "How to Smoke a Pipe", especially the tools, cleaning your pipe after smoking and the cleaning of your Peterson "Old Boy". BTW, I followed your advice and went to GQ Tobacco in the UK and bought the exact same, lovely chrome-stripped style as you. Always wanted a nice lighter, and it is nice! I saved around $35.00 even with Royal Mail vs. buying from the US market, plus this style was hard to find here... Thanks for the handy, dandy tips & tricks. Best, LeRoy

I've found a little spit on a qtip periodically has been keeping my Kiribi fairly clean and carbon free but this seems like a good method once it gets really well-used.
@WalksSlow4 жыл бұрын
Flitz polish paste works well for me. It seems to chemically dissolve the carbon and leaves behind an invisible waxy coating that makes removal of soot with a pipe cleaner or cotton swab (with or without alcohol) very easy. I usually run a dry pipe cleaner over the lighter at the first sign of haze forming on the moving parts and that keeps things continuously shiny.

cool looking but all old boy style lighters are heavily expensive... good alternatives are zippos with butane inserts (more on topic awesome video very informative!!)

I followed your video to the letter. Has I was watching, I also had my tools and cleaning agents ready to go and start cleaning my vertigo lighter. I have to say, watch out for that little jet valve before you strike. Make sure that it's in the right position. If not, the butane will shoot -out sideways. Also, I like to call that little brass piece at the end of the spring that sits next to the flint as a plunger. What do you think? Always great video. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Bradley LOVE your videos! it is always an enjoyable things to watch it. I saw your previous video of Peterson pipe lighter review, and decided to get one as well, I recieved it last week, but it came with full of butane, i wander is that the case of it? did your lighter came with full of butane as well? Thanks!
@stuffandthingsyoutube9 жыл бұрын
chengshaohung - Mine was empty when I received it. I think it's usually not allowed for lighters to be shipped with fuel in them.

I have been looking into getting a Old Boy style lighter for awhile, I currently use a Zippo pipe lighter style and love it. Any thoughts on the Zippo version?

Nice video. I am thinking of getting a Peterson old boy type myself and wanted to ask you something. Should I get the one like yours, which is full metal ? I would like to get the Black one but the only thing that is putting me off is whether the colour would come off at some stage and ruin the beauty of the lighter? What do you suggest. I have a Calibri and its colour came off like in 4-6 months :( and now it looks ugly ... If you think the Peterson is good quality and the coat won't come off then id go with black...please recommend.
