Description: In this video we look at how you can soft reset either an Apple AirPort Extreme or Apple Time Capsule. You would use the soft reset option if you have forgotten the password to your base station, but you need to make changes or access the base stations settings.
When you complete a soft reset you reset the base stations password for 5 minutes, this will allow you to make setting changes and reset the administrative password to something more memorable. If you do not make any changes within 5 minutes the base station will revert back to its previous settings.
In this video we specifically show you how to soft reset an AirPort Extreme. However, the same process is used to soft reset an Apple Time Capsule.

If you're not sure about any of these settings, you can call Apple support 1800-975-0148 ( US & Canada ). That’s the easiest and most general way to get help.

Hello . I hope you can help . Thanks for your great videos . I’ve been using an apple time capsule with 3 tb hard drive as a router and back for 10 years . I’ve just changed my network to an orbi mesh system . How do I add the time capsule to the network as a back up only for all my devices on the network and not a router ? Thanks v much

If you use an ethernet cable to connect your Time Capsule to your Orbi. You could switch off Wifi on your Time Capsule so that your computers connect to it through the Orbi Wifi. You also need to make sure that your Time Capsule uses an IP address in the same range as that being used by your Orbi. So for example if DHCP on your Orbi is in the range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255. Then your Time Capsule needs to be assigned with an IP address in the 192.168.1.x range. This simply ensures that your Time Capsule is on the same network as your Orbi, so that any devices/Macs connecting via wifi can see your Time Capsule. However, as the hard drive in your Time Capsule is now 10 years old. I would be worried that the drive in side the Time Capsule may start to fail. So I am going to recommend an alternative. Take a look at Network Attached Storage, maybe something by Qnap or Synology. While expensive, they do offer a lot of additional functionality over your Time Capsule. So not only will you be able to backup your Macs, you can create your own personal cloud solution, have network shares on your home network and even build your own media server. As a fellow Mac user I prefer Synology over Qnap, so I do have videos on how to set up a Synology NAS, including videos on creating your own personal Time Capsule. Hope this helps

@@mydoodads wow . I can’t thank you enough for your great quick and detailed reply . I really appreciate your time taken to answer my question and your recommendation. This is the only legitimate answer I got from KZbin. Subscribed !! I’m planning on hooking up the time capsule via Ethernet to one of the satellites on the mesh network. Would that make it easy for my other devices to back up on it ? Thanks so much again

@@mele2259 Yes, and your existing devices should continue to backup to their previous saves. However, don't forget that when you connect your Time Capsule to your Orbi, you need to turn off DHCP on the Time Capsule.

@@mydoodads thanks so much again !! So I think I did everything as you perfectly explained . When I click on the time capsule now in airport utilities it says network off ? Is that correct ? It’s calculating to do a back up I guess . It has the correct IP address and everything.

A soft reset should not erase your data. However, please review this Apple article for further clarification - support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201945

@@hasnatfaisal2773 According to Apple's support articles, a flashing Amber light on a Time Capsule would indicate that its internal hard disc is experiencing an issue that requires repair. ref - support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202211 If the internal hard drive has become faulty and you have important information on it. The best course of action is to immediately stop using the Time Capsule Drive and take the drive to a profession data recovery company. Unfortunately, the recovery will not be cheap, but will offer you the best chance for recovering your data. If you are UK based, I have in the past used a company called Ontrack www.ontrack.com/uk/services/data-recovery/hard-drive-recovery/ Sorry I can not be of more help.

HEY :) Is a soft-reset going to delete the all of my pictures, videos and other documents that I have stored on my time capsule?
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Morten, Personally I would backup all the important data on my time capsule before I did any work on the time capsule. However just to confirm, a Soft reset will only "Resets the base station password and disables security (Access Control and RADIUS settings) for 5 minutes so that you can join the network to make changes. If you make no changes within 5 minutes, the base station reverts to its former settings. Perform this reset if you can't administer the base station because you forgot its password." For a full description of the three different reset modes I have linked to this Apple Support article. support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201945 Hope that helps
