Tip toner also removes the oxidation from the tip while it’s hot in process. Will save everyone a lot of frustration if added to the material list! Cheers and fantastic video

What kind of solder is this? I think I bought the wrong kind. I tried to soft solder with pure silver wire. Did I make a mistake?

@@feather_0327 hiya! Yes to use the soldering iron you need to get lead free solder. This is a mixture of tin and other metals that melt at a low temperature. Pure silver solder has a higher melting point and can only be used with a blow torch x

Have you painted the back of the stone mattalic silver or gold because I`m a painter and we use those paints for bleed through on cars with candy paint.

This is exactly what I was looking for- thank you! Quick question- will the solder tarnish badly or change color over time? If so, there any kind of sealant or clear coat that can prevent this?

You're welcome. So I haven't found it tarnish yet since I've been making, I think my oldest pieces are approx 2 years old. But I often seal things with a clear acrylic spray paint - you can spray it over the stones and then use nail varnish remover and a cotton bud to bring the shine back to the stones!

Hello love, Thank you so much for your video! It has seriously helped me. May I ask how you keep the spikes from breaking apart? I’m interested in making larger spikes on my jewelry but found that they’re not sturdy and are prone to breaking off.

So glad you are experimenting!! I would search for a larger head for the soldering iron so you can get more solder down at once and buy a wider gauge solder wire so again you can get the maximum amount of solder on the iron and hopefully achieve those spikes that are eluding you :)

I’m glad it’s helpful! Yes there is a temperature controller and I use it around 150 degrees for blue wax. You should play around though and find out what works for you xxx

The gold electroforming / plating process is much more dangerous, the chemicals contain cyanide so you need appropriate PPE and ventilation. It's not a difficult process you just need to be safe.

Hey, thank you so much ❤️ I have a doubt. When I solder, there remain black pigments (burnt like) remnants. Any advice on how to avoid that, and create spotless solderings?

Ooh, so a way around this is to use liquid flux and flux-free solder. The black pieces are the remainder of the flux inside the solder....you could also try using a paste of baking powder and water and gently scrub it over the piece with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove the black BUT I'm not sure how successful that will be. I hope this helps you :)

hi- looking to glue my pendants to a metal bolo backing,, what do you recommend? i almost bought copper ones in hope i could solder them directly but i didn’t want to risk messing up all my hard work. thanks!

yeah you could glue them - gorilla glue is particularly good. the copper foil is super thin and that is what makes it so conductive - solid copper might not be able to heat up enough but deffo worth trying!

Is there a way to pour molten copper in like the cracks of a gemstone/crystal/rock while in the same process not cracking or damaging the stone further when making some jewelry or amulet?

hello, most gemstones cannot withstand temperatures of molten metal! sea glass can withstand so I suggest you go experiment and let us know what happens :)

I know it’s almost a year since you posted this tutorial, but I find myself in a predicament. I was checking for the materials and I realized in my country lead free solder wire it’s really difficult to find and really expensive. I finally found one but it’s made out of only tin and copper, it doesn’t have silver on it. As an expert do you know if this makes any difference? The absence of silver on the wire would affect the solder quality of the final product? Or you think it’s gonna be ok. Thank you in advance!

Hi! What type of extension do you use for holding the jewellery piece as you solder? And do you know how to use images rather than stones? I’ve tried using heat resistant resin, encasing a drawing or printed image, however it melts and becomes tacky at the edges💗

Hey! Thanks for getting in touch :) The piece for holding the jewellery is called a third hand - I bought mine on ebay :) and using images rather than stones...hmmm can you put something around the edge of the image that is heat retardant?

Hey, the solder wire is listed as a "mixed metal solder" which is usually a mixture of tin/silver/copper - most people have allergies to Nickel I have some metal allergies but don't react to the solder wire! But of course everyone is different :)

Great question! Personally I don’t have a reaction to it and haven’t come across anyone who does but I guess the only way to find out is to trial wearing a piece! I prefer to use non flux cored wire and opt for liquid flux because it reduces the chances of their being black oxidised marks on your finished piece x

I don’t know I’m afraid but maybe spread some solder on a flat surface and add the patina in different dilutions and see what the effect is ☺️

Thank you for this really helpful video. Your pieces are amazing! Just wondering, what temp do you have your soldering gun set to? I’m having a serious problem with my solder bunching up and not spreading smoothly. I m using a hard compound flus that I stick my soldering tip into and then I brush the melted flux onto my piece. I’m going to make the change to a liquid flux to see if this helps to create the smooth, shiny finish I’m seeking for my pieces. Any pointers would be really appreciated. BTW, I have my soldering gun set at 550.

Copper tape is essential as the solder needs something to flow along. The copper tape conducts the heat along which the solder flows.

Hi thanks for getting in touch! I don’t think it will make a huge difference which one you use. For best results I would always opt for a non flux cored wire and use a separate liquid flux

For making the bezel around the stone, I'm using copper wire inside the copper tape. The solder wire is a non-flux cored wire that I got from amazon / ebay! And the flux is just an ordinary bottle of liquid flux also from ebay :) Hope that helps, I'm not sure exactly of the products because of purchasing them so long ago xx

This will work on a pearl ☺️ pearls cannot handle being soldered with a blow torch. This is a different process

hmm i"m not sure, you could experiment and see! A lot of gardening centers / shops will have copper tape because it is used a s a slug repellant.

You definitely need copper tape! You can buy it online or from a garden centre as it’s used as snail repellent. The copper tape creates a conductive surface so that the heat can travel along your object and the solder can flow along the heat. I hope that makes sense ☺️

Hello! This happened to me too, I found I could avoid it by purchasing a flux free solder. Most solder wire has a flux core to help it flow. But finding a flux-free one and using a liquid flux on the copper tap seemed to work well.

Hey, it's been a really long time since I did electroforming but the watts is very low and the amps is higher. I would experience with 4V and 6A and see what happens.

I think I'm using 1.5mm copper wire. I'd avoid going any smaller than 1mm!

After many years yes it will it’s just a fun project that doesn’t use expensive precious metals and you can retrieve the stones you have used quite easily

Yess! Copper tape is essential for this project as it is what the solder flows along.

I don't think this is jewellery soldering, this is stained glass windows soldering technique not jewellery technique I'd know.

Thanks for your comment and you are correct. The above video is a demonstration of soft soldering, not silver or goldsmith style soldering.

What gauge copper wire do you use?
