You mentioned maybe not needing to pickle before soldering the opposite side - How do you know if your metal is clean enough to not pickle in between?

If everything looks quite black and oxidized, then you should pickle. The paste flux tends to keep things pretty clean but you can always pickle if you are in doubt. 😃
