Wow, what an excellent tutorial! (!) The idea of reballing a BGA chip had seemed exotic and unattainable, but you made it seem simple. I came for your RPi 4 video (linked from the Hackaday blog), then saw this one on solder rework. Great job! I've subscribed, and will watch closely for anything else you put out! (PS: Don't worry about the robotic voice. It still feels like you guiding us and telling us how to do things; I appreciate the effort to make the content easily understandable!)

Thank you for specifying all the temperatures and airflow you use, so many tutorials skip them completely. This kind of information is very important to new people that don't yet have a "feel" for it. So far I have done everything up to qfn but I haven't yet tried bga. Once the ram chip arrives I'll have some fun with it, thank you for the idea. Also, I don't mind the robotic voice. I actually prefer a clear and understandable synthesized voice over a real noisy, hard-to-understand voice with a random accent. Keep up the good work. I'm sure that because of you many new people will become interested in fucking around with their electronics, and that's amazing.

Thank you so much for taking my suggestion for the USB ports and making a video, I REALLY appreciate it. Now I can see where I went wrong with my RPi4 and because of your help I actually feel confident I can get the damaged one fixed. I also appreciate you going over the different chips too. That will help me as I learn to replace those as well. I have another question for you. Where do you get the stencils for re-balling chips from? I'm from Canada but I live in the States, so if you have any suggestions where in the US I could get them, that would be awesome.

If you want to order directly form US I would suggest checking out this shop: northridgefix.com/shop/ , but do bear in mind that in any case it will be cheaper for you to order from Aliexpress directly, since it is the main supplier for this stuff.

I don’t post comments on youtube, but you got me as a subscriber. I’m a beginner to soldering, I do mostly basic stuff and I wanted to go on with microsoldering and I cannot find any information or tutorials about microsoldering. In this video you explained so much I want to thank you very much, I will proceed and buy many pastes because I can see now that they are very important. One question: if we want to reball something and we don’t have the mold for it what else can we do?
@MadEDoctor
@MadEDoctor Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear I was helpful! About the question: You have only one very difficult and tricky thing left to do. In short, there are solder balls sold in big quantities like 25000 balls for 2-3$ and you can use them for re-balling. There are a few things to consider few things, first of all, there are I think 15-20 different sizes (like 0.2mm, 0.25, 0.30) up to about 1mm or so, and for every chip, you need a specific size so better have most of the smaller ones in stock. The next thing is you need to use a solder wick on the chip to prepare it for the balls. Then you apply a very small amount of flux and disperse it with a Q-tip or smth so you get a very thin layer of flux on the pads. After this, you are ready to place one by one the balls over the pads - make sure to center them to minimize the risk of them touching and combining into one big solder blob. Now you better have a board heater that you can reach 200-250 degrees C, or you will need to use a hot air station set to the lowest possible airflow and again it can be a nightmare. You need to heat up the chip as gently as possible to melt the balls and allow them to stick to the pads below without them moving and touching each other. If you are still reading - I hope this was enough to make you buy a stencil xD Also, you can use a combination of premade balls and stencil and it is a lot easier.

@@MadEDoctor You do an excellent job explaining and showing these things, even with text to speech! (which doesn't bother me at all either) I have a lot of these items and honestly don't know how to use most of them haha. I have a DS213 pocket oscilloscope from miniware running a custom firmware to fix some of the bugs, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I do love their TS80P USB-C PD soldering iron though (also running a custom firmware of course lol). I see the prices of Raspberry Pi's skyrocketing and think how smart I was to buy so many model 3b boards, zero 2's, and of course a Pi 4 2Gb back before 2020! My ex wife didn't understand why I needed to collect them all and perhaps that's why we are no longer partners! 😂 Are you into SDR at all? Is the purpose of reballing the BGA to swap the lead-free with lower melting temp leaded solder ?
@MadEDoctor
@MadEDoctor Жыл бұрын
If we talk for a new chip, than yes. But if we talk about reusing a chip (or getting it from a donor board), you are required to do a re-ball, or else the chip won't make a proper contact with the board. It is true that when you go over it with some flux and soldering iron the all the pads get equal amount of solder on them, but this amount Is far from the balls needed.

Bro, this is the best tutorial I have watched. You give the best tips such as placing the low temp solder on a coffee filter, I had always had trouble with that. Have you ever had a chip or IC crack before? I am interested in upgrading the main memory in some old phones but that would require more tools to reflash the software on there right?
@MadEDoctor

If you are going to upgrade the storage on those phones you are going to need a eMMC programmer to copy all the data from the original one and to transfer it to the new one or else it ain't gonna work.

I randomly stumbled on your raspberry vid and was so happy with ur explanation and attention to detail, and its totally fine with robotic voice even though its little annoying but the quality of the vid overlaps it completely. If you are taking suggestions, please teach the connections for 18650 3.7v cells to make 12v battery with battery protection and charger chip connected to it and is it alright if i connected usb c type charger chip to a already builtin overcharge protection chip to 12v battery ?? First of all thank you! About the suggestion - it is actually good idea, but I really don't work on batteries very often and at this moment I don't have a spot welder. In my opinion it is not nessesery most of the time, but If I make a video soldering Li-ion cells together it will be the most hated video ever... And so thins probably won't happen soon. I am sorry! The robot voice isn't great, but: - It's easy to understand, especially if the alternative is a heavy accent. English is not my first language, so accents can be pretty hard to understand. I prefer following and understanding the video over original voice. - If I were a creator I'd be terrified of someone impersonating me by training an AI on my voice. Robot voice is much more anonymous XD
