Glad we are finally getting some actual technical videos like he use to in the past. I understand that he probably had to grow with his audience and that small niche of people watching the originals wasn't going to support the channel so he had to post more life hacks and Gizmos. I like Channels like Great Scott which get really technical and make cool Raspberry Pi and Arduino things. Always makes for a great weekend project.

I was up till 3am trying to resolder some broken connections on my mechanical keyboard and failing. It's ruined now. I wake up today and this video is uploaded answering all the questions I had last night. Damn.

Nice quick video. Btw to make the continuity test with your multimeter easier you can also put the leads in the through-hole sections. It gives you a bit more space than testing on the actual IC pins

Just a tip, apply flux to the PCB, tack down the corners then flux all the pins, then do your drag soldering. And do not stay on one pin for too long as you will damage the chip from the heat. This type of chip with proper technique only takes literally 5 seconds to solder. Use a wave tip also.

Kipkay, every time I see you use the conical tip I scream inside. It's so much easier to use a chisel tip for your soldering iron especially for SMD Drag soldering.
@sharkbytecomputer
@sharkbytecomputer 7 жыл бұрын
Elminator666 or a tip with a small hook on the end can work fairly well...but I do prefer a small chisle tip for almost everything... I'm more cringing at what the end solder joint looks like...I see excessive solder on the back side...but that's just me coming in as someone who has been through professional soldering and solder inspection training...

Last time I did SM soldering I destroyed a test pad, lifted a track and "lost" a surface mount resistor.. That board is now a frankenboard with a standard 100 ohm resistor bridging where the track should be.. Never again. _I need a temperature controlled iron with a smaller tip.. A much smaller tip_

well, this was one of the easiest SMD soldering scenarios, good luck doing this with barely visible resistors, caps and ICs with a much larger PCB where alligator clips are not applicable. Still, it was useful, thanks for sharing.

Here's a (probably newb) question... On comercial motherboards, is it possible to upgrade their functionality by adding missing components and then flashing the appropriate bios of said higher model board you are using as reference? Hope that makes sense.

try adding fresh tin and flux to the existing solder connections. this will ensure a better heat transfer and lower the melting point.
