So cool someone is finally doing a how-to or at least a full in depth deal on what you’re doing for the Ranger. I just finished mine so you’re a little late but that’s fine 😂

Excellent explanations and tutoring. I roamed the bush up here in British Columbia for 40 years since coming home. I built some, helped others, or advised many friends and clients with their builds and ran a mud-racing club for 5 years back in the eighties. My off-road history included several family-oriented clubs as well. I no longer push my boundaries as age bears on me but I still love off-road adventures with a passion.

Love the build!! What gear ratio did you use? I’d recommend at least 35s for those axles because any smaller and you’ll sacrifice ground clearance. A Dana 30 hp and a ford 8.8 31 would offer more ground clearance with the same tire and will still be plenty strong with 35s. But I’m not sure what the intended outcome of the build is. I’d love to see this thing out on the trails.
@RangerShop1
@RangerShop1 9 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah you’re bang on! Once I started really looking at it I ended up going with 35” tires with 4:56 gears I’m also going to do the gears out of a 3.0 into my 5speed. Your definitely right a 30 with my 8.8 would have been great but I was actually looking for the extra width of the full width axles due to pulling my trailer off road. Hope that makes sense. I do believe for 75% of ones out there that want I nice simple straight axle swap a hp 30 with 31 spline 8.8 is the way to go.

Did you add something in between the frame plate and the indent for the shock. Or did you just add the radius plate at the top.
@RangerShop1
@RangerShop1 24 күн бұрын
I only added the radius bit… it’s hard since it’s like a vee notch…. Not the same all the way through. Hope that makes sense. So far I’ve beat on it quite a bit… no cracks at all

I feel like I keep coming back to your video, I love your in depth analysis, and I reallllly appreciate you answering my many questions, I have just a few more, How did you decide where to place your steering box and the angle of it ? I've seen some others doing D44 swaps and they just measure center of hub to center of hub before they take anything apart, then they just make sure the new D44 sits at the same distance as the previous axle, is that how you did it, or how did you determine where you wanted the axle to sit ?

Hi! Love your videos - they are super helpful to me, as I am a fellow Ranger owner and there aren't many others on KZbin who make such wonderful videos as yourself about these trucks. Thank you! Is this axle a '76-77 or '78-79? Looks like the radius arm mounts are the ones that are casted on rather than welded, but I figured I'd ask.
@RangerShop1
@RangerShop1 9 ай бұрын
Glad to help! Yeah you’re right it has the cast on wedges I think they are from a 1979 F150.

@@RangerShop1 Cool! One more question: is there a notable difference in width from the factory F150 axle spring mounts to the Ranger frame spring mounts? Do the springs bow inward from the axle to the frame? Thanks.
@RangerShop1
@RangerShop1 8 ай бұрын
Maybe very slightly but not that bad… here’s what I did. The lower spring cups can be rotated 180 degrees that puts it closer to the frame by about an inch. Then the plate moved the coil buckets out a bit…. You could also buy coil buckets from Duff that are extended out and line up perfectly…. I just went the cheapest route.

Thinking about doing this with my buddy, i was wondering how much you got the front axle for and what your total cost is?
@RangerShop1
@RangerShop1 8 ай бұрын
Sure. I’ll do a breakdown video after, but roughly. Both axles were cheap…200, radius arms another 200, steering box 75, but then it starts adding up fast….. I regeared it, added limited slip front and rear, all new brakes, bearings, ball joints, coil springs buckets, brackets, 1 ton GM Tie rod ends, DOM, plate, etc etc 😄 I have to add up all my receipts but ball park another 3K CAN so like 2300 US in parts…. It’s definitely not a cheap swap but hopefully one that will last a long time!

who makes that radiator? I've only found the plastic and aluminum ones for my explorer. are you worried about the drag link being so far forward might get tie rod end bind?

I replaced my stock one with an Integra 4 row. Then again I did an HP D30 with a Ford F series steering box inside the frame.

It’s a aftermarket aluminum radiator- something like this one - www.ebay.ca/itm/233072112274 It’s a 3 core so you need to remove a bit of you shroud and I’m not sure if the mechanical fan would work, I have electric fan.

What kind of product do you use on your frame to prevent rust?
@RangerShop1
@RangerShop1 9 ай бұрын
Man that’s a really hard question. I haven’t found anything super effective over the years. What I found works best is I grind it down best I can wipe it with Acetone and then paint rustoleum with a universal hardener added. After it’s dry for about 3 weeks that I fluid film everything, body, frame, etc. the paint seems to last for about 3 years driving in the salt daily. I use the fluid film every year…. I have my own sprayer. Hope that helps rust is such a pain!!!
