How To Solo On Rhythm Changes (with Backing Tracks)

In this episode we continue to explore the on of the most famous and difficult chord progressions to solo on in Jazz, Rhythm Changes. It is the chord progression to I Got Rhythm by George Gershwin. This progression has been used by Jazz players for over 80 years to write songs over. I have provided 3 play along tracks at the end of the video for practice.

Rick, can you do a video on Rhythm Guitar? What is it? What does it sound like (in different genres, for example). A lot of the best rhythm guitar strikes me as a hybrid of chords mixed with melodic elements... but there's also 'crafting the rhythm of a part' that's so different than 'campfire strumming'. D U D U D U.... I like Highway to Hell as a dead simple (chord-wise) example that demonstrates how rhythm sells a song - or how Tom Petty uses chord tones on the high strings to create melodic riffs with Rhythm Guitar in (for example) Free Falling... I watched a video about the song Rainy Night in Georgia which is a more sophisticated hybrid of techniques. It's such a broad and genre-specific topic but I know it isn't just playing chords. It's a specialized kind of part writing that supports songs. I'd love to hear your thoughts. By the way - you're the best.

suddenly @ 7:39 jazz turns Classic!To what degree does the melody of the song ACTUALLY enter into the equation while playing chord changes...sounds like a stupid question,however Rock players are dismissed for building solos that could fit into any Song of the same Key(and sometimes NOT).Outlining a chord is one thing,complimenting the melody is another.I love Jazz music but like Rock(metal),sometimes I have to absorb it in small doses...laughing as I type this,love your lessons.

How do you get your guitar to sound so much like a "jazz guitar"? I play in my high school jazz band and can't exactly afford an archtop guitar. I currently use a stratocaster and traditionally they and les pauls aren't "jazz guitar". I have tried everything to make my guitar sound like "that sound". How are you getting your les paul to sound so good?

Well of course. But is there a certain amp setting you use? I have tried just about everything.

Jack Weekly Jazz can be played on a Strat, check out Jay Umble. Try putting some flatwound strings on, at least .11 or .12 gauge, Daddario Chromes or Thomastik Infeld George Benson strings. Play on the front pickup, roll the tone and/or the highs on the amp back about 30-40% , but leave the mids on 4-5, bass around 4. Turn the amp volume down but the guitar volume up - set the guitar vol wide open and adjust amp for the sound level you need. If the amp distorts at all, back off guitar vol until there's no distortion. Hope that helps.

Hi Rick - some really great stuff on here - Which is why I post - Q Why give all this info for free ? Do you think it may affect guitar tutors / tuition ? I have only a few 'example lessons' on my channel - Most is example ' playing' meant to inspire / intrigue etc Why not just give sample 'edits' of your content ...and charge for the full lessons ? You potentially make others look mean or desperate for having subscription fee's / pay per view set up / charging for their DVD'S etc - when they are just trying to get by as musicians. This is not really about ' how great or big you are ' . People need to get by at all levels . Its fine to respond with ' no way is this intended to replace lessons attended in person as we really need teacher student interaction / feedback . Students need to be seen to correct hand position / technique - heard / tested etc- .blah blar bla . Yes we know that - Thinking about that point ...how often have you seen it even mentioned on all these lessons on becoming awesome ? The truth is many wont now take lessons when they feel they ' get them for free online ' . I have college students ... but I like many also rely on private students /lessons . If the little guys dont make money then they simply cant justify the time spent making music... unless they are wealthy in the first place... and I really dont like the idea that only the rich make art : / Interested to hear your views on this . All good but to me this is left brain, thinking through the changes, playing. Personally, I love Lester Young, Stan Getz et al. They, generally speaking, didn't work for the chord-changes, the chord-changes worked for them. They played in the domain of home key and the blues over the lot. The domain includes riffs, melodic ideas, half-step lead-ins, subs and slurs, pedals and all the rest infused with the blues. Forget the changes and let it rip. Personally, I find the above playing style unmelodic and cerebral - but that's just my humble opinion. Rick's playing is great, no doubt about it. It's a style thing.
