I've always liked Joe Morello. His long solos were quite unique. Shortnin' Bread was the melody plus improvisation. Dave Weckl has great technique but is also very "tuneful"🥁👍

Good to hear from you Graeme. I love that solo. That really made me aware of the idea of playing the actual Melody on the set.

Great video!! You said, one measure rock beat and one measure solo. What does one measure solo mean? Thanks.
@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity
@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity 3 ай бұрын
One measure is 4 counts. So 4 counts of rock beat. Then 4 counts of drum solo.

I've been trying this out. The solo feels like a fill. Is that the right direction?
@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity
@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity 3 ай бұрын
@@andrew007s Yes. Solos and fills can be quite synonymous. Sometimes fills are solos and vise versa. The exception would be a very long solo. At some point when the fill get long enough you really can't call it a drum fill. At that point it's definitely a drum solo.

CAN SOLOING REALLY BE TAUGHT? I THINK IT COMES FROM THE HEART. OTHERWISE ONE CAN BECOME A CLONE!!!!!

Thanks for your comment. In the video I teach you how to develop your own solo ideas not copy other drummers. It's just a practicing framework, not the actual solo. You practice and then you play from your heart, your own creativity.

@eddierivera1860 I think you miss the point. There are obviously certain elements that make some solos great and cause some solos to fall apart when those elements are absent. As is the case with almost all music (if not all art) and so also with solos, there are underlying principles that make you better at it. He is not telling you that you have to play every solo the way he does, nor does he say you must play every stroke that he plays, he is giving you IDEAS. Maybe you are the drummer that thinks any non-sensical random thumping on your kit is sufficient for a solo. If you think there is nothing to be taught in regards of solos, then I strongly doubt your skills... I am at best an intermediate drummer, and even I can tell you that YES, you can be taught to play a better solo by better drummers.

That's a great answer. It's really the same as learning to create beats/grooves.Ultimately you want to play what you feel. But it definitely helps to first study drummers who are great at it.

From the heart? Please inform all of us (IN CAPS) how this is achieved. If by HEART you mean improvisation, then how does one improvise effectively? This only happens after months and years of sticking exercises, hitting tempo goals, getting a good handle on rudiments, playing along with your favorite songs and emulating your heroes, etc. My point is that this vid actually does a great job at describing to beginners and intermediate drummers how to approach a solo methodically. If I tell a noob to soloing to simply play from the heart, we all know what that's going to sound like in front of an audience.

Fills and solos are closely related. Fills are like short solos. Solos are groups of fills.

@BradAllenDrumsKansasCity

It's a jazz bass not a rock bass. For straight -ahead acoustic jazz that's the sound you want. But you are right when you say for rock that's not the best sound. For that music you want thick heads and a lot more muffling. Thanks your feedback
