How To Solve The Viral Matchstick Puzzle 6 + 4 = 4

Can you fix 6 + 4 = 4 by moving 1 matchstick? This problem has gone viral on Facebook, with one post having over 400,000 shares. The ground rules are you cannot break a stick, it should be an equality (=), and you have to use 7-segment numbers (the block numbers 0 to 9 commonly seen on a calculator). My thought was to take the lower left matchstick from the 6 and place it horizontally on top of the four right of the equal sign, so the equation would read 5+4=9. That would, of course, be valid if one did not need the bottom line to make a 9.

The "ground rules" listed here were not present in the original Facebook post, which gives a few more solutions than presented here. 1) 5 + 4 = 9. In this case, the 9 does not have the bottom segment. In my searches of 7-segment LED numbers, I found that some people use the bottom segment, and some people don't. Adding an extra ground rule that says a 9 has to have the bottom segment prevents this from being a valid solution, but it does work for the Facebook meme. 2) 6 - 4 ≠ 4. This is a valid relationship, though it is an inequality instead of an equality. Adding an extra ground rule which requires the result to be an equality instead of an inequality prevents this from being a valid solution, but it also works for the Facebook meme. 3) 5 + 4 ≠ 4. Same caveat as #2.

This is my answer before watching the video. The middle stick in the six you rotate on the red end to make it a 0 making the equation 0+4=4

there are 5 different solutions for this. 1. take the stick from the bottom of the 6 and put it on the head of 4 on the RHS. 2. TAKE the vertical stick from the addition sign and attach it to the right side of 6 to make it into an 8. 3. take the middle stick from 6 and attach it to the right top edge of 6 to male it into a 0. 4. take the vertical stick from the addition sign and put it over the = to make it into a not equal to sign. 5. take a stick from equal to and put it horizontally above or below the horizontal stick of the + sign and make it into a not equal to sign. I was thinking 6 - 4 != 4. I moved the vertical match creating a minus sign and simply placed it on top of the equal sign. we then get 6 - 4 not equal 4.

@@smartart6841 Oh, I understand THIS video stated the constraint. What I said was if no one, which means other times a similar problem is presented, often they do not state that constraint. I thought it was clear I was NOT talking about this example, but those example where someone, probably not as familiar with math, presents the match sticks, but leaves out the equalities only constraint. (So perhaps read and understand what I wrote before YOU reply!) Most times, people do mention you cannot break them, nor can you just take away a stick. But seldom is the equalities only constraint provided when the problem is presented by those who are not well versed in math. I.E. your uncle who didn't finish 8th grade brings you this problem. He probably doesn't even know what an inequality is. Clear?

5+4=9? I mean, there are different designs for the block numbers. Like, the segment at the bottommost part of the 9 isn't required. So isn't an additional segment "dangling" from the 7's topmost segment. Yes, I know I can't do that, but that's one possibility if you weren't restricted to the 7-segment display number type in the video.

Well if 9 could be shown with one less match(without the one on the bottom) then you can take the vertical bottom left match so that it shows 5 and put it horizontally on top of the second 4 so that it becomes 9. Then we d have 5+4=9. Cant think of any other solution.
