Superb step-by-step how-to on accessing & cleaning a Sony VAIO cooling fan, also on tools and procedures. I replaced my fan, and my laptop was slightly different, but this will get you there. Fan itself is held in by 2 screws. (I had a dust bunny from a previous owner inside the fan housing...) My Sony no longer overheats and shuts down. This was a great money- and time-saver. Can't recommend highly enough.

My Avio is about 4 years old and recently has been running hot , swicthing off and all was not well with her. Having watched brian's vidoe a few times I thought "Will gie this a go" rather than leave it into a repair shop, if an hour does the job will give it a go. Bought the tools, and gear to do the job and did the clean as shown. Getting the srews out in some order was the biggest part of the job , the rest was not so bad, it came apart easily and although slightly different on the inside orientation was easy and the actual job took a short period of time. Put back together again she refused point blank to start , went to bed got up next morning still nothing. Looked at the video again and took her apart again, decided to reinsert the 2 x ram boardds and to slighly loosen the scres just incase I had over tightened them, this done put her back together and had a quick prayer to the PC God above. Plug in switch on and away she went , now I have two left hands , no working PC knowledge and for me this was the first time to try anything like this. I was very surprised to find so much dust inside her on the fan and in the body casing , I cleaned this out with alcohol swabs and using air dried it off, it took but a few minutes but so worth while. I did not disconnect the fan as I was unsure and thought I would brak it so very deliacte holding and cleaning - again the dust gathered there - so much . Your guide worked for me Brian and your advice regarding prepartion and storage of parts / screws , along with taking some photos of the various stages proved very useful. Only thing I would do again as a confidence booster and as a last check would be to watch your excellent video "one last time" before "going at it". How does it run now alot quieter, now running for 3 hours and no switching off, so I will say " it worked for me". Thankyou for your advice and well constructed video , excellent. (Insert thumbs up here). :) Js Ireland.

There are 3 screws under dvd on some sonys. Don't try to tear the cover off guys. Remove the screw that holds dvd, then remove dvd and then remove 3 remaining screws located directly under the dvd. Hope this helps to some of you doing it on old sony laptops. Thank you DYI for the vid, I felt much more comfortable doing this job after watching this video. The paste I had to replace was so old it became as hard as stone. I had to scratch it off wit ha knife.

The results of this process on my girlfriends Vaio have been outstanding. For 2 years we've been listening to that laptop sounding like it's about to take off! This weekend I followed your tutorial identically and now it is truly silence again. Thank you so much for posting that video.

1. Use table cloth over your work area to avoid scratches on the laptop cover. 2.Dont blow air on the fan keeping opened laptop below. do it away from the opened parts. 3.As you opened , put thermo paste on the cpu and gpu as well. 4. Wipe the board with a non lint, cloth dipped in IPA. 5. Ram contact and hard disc contacts all can be wiped with IPA solution to remove any stain 6. Banging to bring screws out are not required. before assembling, check fan is working or not by giving power. Nice video, good clarity, instructions are vivid. tray method is good. I liked the video.

Sweet baby Jesus. I bought my vaio in 2009 and got these rad speakers with it, it was cheap but didn't come with any kind of warranty. A month later my fan crapped out and made horrific grating noises. I have used it like that until today, when I finally switched the fan out. Bless your little heart for this amazing instructional. Can't even tell my laptop is on! Xo

I have a 17 inch Sony Vaio that's been a great machine since the time I bought it in 2013. It wasn't overheating, but I wanted to change out the HDD with a new Samsung 860 SSD. Thanks to your video, I was able to see what was involved before cracking open the Vaio. Since, I had the computer apart, I cleaned the cooling fan assembly and reinstalled the themal paste to the CPU and GPU as you showed and also changed out the CMOS battery since I was in there. With the new SSD and the cleaning, this laptop works super terrific and should be good for several more years. Your're absolutely right about the well engineered design layout of the Sony Vaio . I worked on a Dell and Acer laptop and what a pain they were to get apart and work on. I wish Sony hadn't quit making laptops. Thanks again for a great video. Oh, I also liked your tip of using a small parts box that was labled to keep track of the different parts as you removed them. That was a simple clever setup. I wished had that when I took the Dell apart; would've saved a lot of grief.

Thank you very much for this brilliant demonstration of how to take the laptop apart, clean the fan, replace the Thermal Paste, and put it all back together. I am so amazed that I just managed to do it with my own 6 year old Sony Vaio VGN whose fan was making the most unearthly noise along with heating up really badly. I have never - NEVER - taken a computer apart before, but with your calm, easy to follow steps, I was able to get it done - and inside, it is a little bit different to the one you used for your demonstration. I was watching you on the video on a small tablet, and it was still totally clear enough to follow along, (even though I had to keep pausing you cos I was way slower!). I have the laptop up and running again (I can't believe it is actually working! LOL) and it doesn't seem to be starting up with the massive fan noise now - there was a LOT of dust in there! I will totally recommend you to anyone I know who needs help with laptop service. P.S., I rarely even sign into Google/KZbin, let alone make comments on videos, but it was well worth bothering to sign in to thank you for what you have done to help me. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! :)

Thank you for sharing this video. My wife has exactly this laptop. I had to open it 2 or 3 times, because the fan was making a lot of noise. Not only in the fan, I found also some dust and dirt in the copper radiator. I was surprised that the fan had no bearing or similar in the axis. I added a little drop of oil in the axis of the fan, and now it could rotate better. Thanks for your nice video, and kind regards from Holland.

I know you added this video some time ago but i search for this about a week ago managed to buy all the relevant bits and bobs i would need and set to today to clean my Sony Vaio Laptop as it was always running hot very slow and kind of annoying. Well all i can say is wow i am stunned the difference in performance and how cool the actual fan runs now and isn't whirring away like a beast as it was before struggling. The laptop is coming up to 8 yrs old but is a fast laptop and still plenty for what i need but i was truly staggered in the amount of crap that had culminated inside! geez. I also went ahead and pulled all the top apart and cleaned the keyboard which took a while but worth it. So thank you Brian much appreciated glad i found your video and i highly recommend anyone doing this 100% :)

after my first and only laptop, (which is over 6 year old sony) i realized all laptops have very bad cooling system for size. they need so much bigger fans and holes. I affectively killed my own laptop's life by heavy usage so I don't mind money that I spent. It still works okay enough not under heavy gaming etc. but i will definitely never buy laptop anymore as I am not rich. Desktop for heavy usage like rendering + gaming is so much cheaper, cooler, easy to clean, easy to replace and upgrade. Budget mobile phones and tablets are so much better than laptops if you really need mobile computer. (I currently use asus zenfone 2 which is $250 in usa nearly solves every problem I have.)

Thanks for sharing and helpful video. My VAIO cooling fan was getting real loud, and laptop was overheating. I didn't want to take my laptop apart yet, so used a hose style vacuum cleaner with a nozzle attachment to suck out a bunch of dust and lint from the side, and bottom cooling vents. Worked great. Hope that helps some other people.

As a Techie myself, and a perfectionist, I recognize and acknowledge Brian's skills and details, especially addressing my pet peeve of Technicians using power tools on a notebook/laptop and replacing ALL of the screws when re-assembling. Two details i disagree with "DIY Tech" is - 1. Most of the dirt and debris is caught by the fins of the radiator. He did not blow air in reverse through the radiator. I separate the fan from the radiator and use a small brush to remove the layer of lint hair or other, then I blow air in reverse flow and look through the fins to make sure they are clear. 2.The "Grain Of Rice" method when applying the heat sink compound to the CPU. The proper method is to spread a layer of about .010" to the entire chip surface (Black in this case) ONLY. Since Silver Oxide is partially conductive, you don't want it to be on the surrounding components of the CPU.

hi, buddy yesterday i removed the CPU heatsink and serviced the fan, applied new thermal paste etc. however the result is not that good. CPU temperature is still around 50 degree at idle, and around 60 degree when watching any youtube video, cpu fan almost running all the time. I was hoping after cleaning the heatsink would do a better job like when it was new, so that the fan does not need to kick in and operate (which is noisy) most of the time. what is the normal CPU temperature on your machine? is the fan operating often?

Thanks a lot. Your solution worked liked a magic after some initial hiccups. My Sony VAIO VPECEB101 was 7 years old, and it used to heat up and make half of the keyboard extremely hot. I never opened it myself. The noise was terrible, like a mixer grinder at a very high speed. I updated the Intel chipset, VAIO drivers, BIOS etc, took all important Windows 7 home Premium Service pack 1 updates and security patches. However, only after cleaning the way you suggested, the heat and noise completely disaapeared. It is revived! Behaves like the way it was bought orignally. After the laptop was reassembled and started, it failed to boot few times. And than it somehow booted but it would quickly shut itself down few a times more. I rechecked the RAM slots, took the RAM out one by one and again put them back. Did power reset. However, the issue of auto shut down continued. Fan was working though. I thought that the MX2 thermal conductor that I used, requires more time to soldify. So I left the laptop upside down for couple of hours, went to shopping and than came back and rebooted. The VAIO did a thorough scanning of the memory during startup (reparsed few memory records) and than it booted and stabilized. We were back in business! I did some more memory checking with chkdsk, scannow, cleaned registry with CCCleaner, tuned up my VAIO with VAIO Care, took few more important Microsofot .NET framework security update patch. At the end, it is now working perfectly fine. Fan blows cool air!! No noise and heating even after 6 to 7 hours of prolonged use!!! Thank you very much!!!!

Thank you for the video! My Sony Vaio VPCCW17FX has overheated several times during the last 3 days. It’s not quite the same design as the one in your video, but close enough. I made a chart showing where all the screws go, sorted the screws into groups and put them into an egg carton. I cleaned the old thermal paste off with a former T-shirt and isopropyl alcohol. There was still some stubborn old paste on the sides of the processor and graphics processor. I chipped that off with the file from a nail clippers, but just on the sides! I wouldn’t do that on the top of a chip. And there was a little round piece with screw threads inside that had become detached. It’s part of what holds down the hard drive door. I glued that back in place with JB Weld. Everything went back together okay. I did not have even one extra screw. Yeah for being organized! I’m using the Vaio right now and so far, it’s working fine! After I finish my vitamin order, THEN I can look up how to clean the screen and how to update the video driver. (I’ve read that LOTS of people with the same or similar models have buggy video drivers. That is Sony’s fault for not talking with the N-Vidia people.) To everyone who attempts this, it really helps to draw a chart of where the screws go! I just used a sheet of paper, a pen and an egg carton. Number the screws in groups. For example, the screws that go under the battery are B-1 through B-5. The screws along the front edge are A-1 through A-5. No group has more than 6 screws; so this is much easier to keep track of than looking at screw 32 all by itself and wondering where the thing goes. There are just 2 screws on the bottom side of the DVD drive, D-1 and D2. There are 6 screws on the back left and back right sides, 3 on each side. This is much simpler than dealing with all the screws at once! And be careful when you pick up the screws! It’s easy to drop those little things. It’s best if you can work on a kitchen table, with a tile or linoleum floor and nothing else around you, so when you drop a screw, you will be able to find it again. These screws are so small, if you drop one on carpet, your chances of finding it again are close to zero, and it’s such a bother to hunt for a little screw in carpet. Remember to work carefully and methodically. Don’t lose your temper and don’t do anything impulsive. And it’s better to wear latex gloves to protect your computer from static electricity. I wore gloves until I had the bottom cover back on and I was putting it back together. Good luck, enjoy the nice weather and have a happy weekend :)

Thanks so much for this nice coordinated video. For my laptop during summer I reduce the processor management usage in my advanced power options to 80%. Does that play a significant role in reducing over heating? My laptop is almost 3 years old and I have never taken it to the shop till now. But this heating issue is bothering me. I'm not lucky enough like the people living near your shop because they have well organised and honest technicians like you to help them. Here I'm afraid if I drop my laptop in the shop they might replace original parts with cheap ones and that's why I'm always hesitant about taking it to the shop.

Can I just clean out the fan with compressed air and not replace the paste? Does it really matter, or do you absolutely have to do it? Can you wear something like rubber gloves to prevent static? Will this affect my laptop in any way? Like memory/file loss? In escence, will I lose data? Thanks up front!

Hi Brian. Thanks for sharing this. I found that the thermal paste comes in a variety of ways, ie. conducting, non conducting ect. Does Sony recommend a particular type or do they have a specific part number for the proper paste? Is the spectra cool that you use have a part number? Thanks again for taking the time to post.

Thanks for the video, this is really helpful! You said you'd post about the spudgers (non-marring tools) but I'm not seeing that link. Could you explain a little more about those? I think I could use them to repair musical instruments.

Nice video!!! I cleaned the fan applied thermal paste and reassembled. However the fan is not spinning. When I start my vaio it shows power light on, however the hard disk light is on for few seconds and then turns of. I do not see anything on screen. Need your help to understand what is happening.

I bought the same laptop in 2021 (170 eur). With 8 Gb RAM, SSD harddrive, AMD RadeonT 7600M Graphics, Intel i3 CPU. Running smooth here ... boottime 5 seconds. Unfortunately it's windows 10 and i can't have the Sony VAIO Control Center installed anymore, so i can put the backlights of the keyboard on. This is perfect, to see that FAN-cleaning is very easy. Not taking everything apart....

Hello DIY Tech ! Earlier this day I partially followed your guide ! I removed all screws on the bottom, removed RAM and the 2 HDD it has and lastly, the cover. Since I did not have the right equipment (like thermal paste , compressed air), I removed the visible dirt from fan by blowing a lot and some poking around the blades of the fan (mainly scratching slightly whatever dirt was stuck on the blades). So, I did NOT remove the fan. And then put back the laptop in one piece. The problem is that (now that it's functioning) when I have my right hand right below the keyboard (that is where the HDD are) the laptop starts vibrating with constant vibrating sound. I have noticed that if I push the casing left of the keyboard (that is where the fan is located) the vibration/sound stops. Could you point me in the right direction to solve this one? I have heard from friends it was a stupid idea to sorta clean the fan that way cause now the fan might be finding some dirt obstacles or there are some loose screws (although I think I screwed them pretty well). No idea ! Thanks in advance !

hey!! the copper extension of the fan in my notebook has bonded well with the processor and i can't remove it. Maybe thats the reason my system doesn't boot now. The fan was making loud noises since days but i didn't pay heed. Also my hard disk was virus infested. I know I have been careless. What do u suggest?

Excellent tutorial. Thank you. Just one question - do you remove the RAM because the back won't come off unless you do this first, or is it for damage limitation reasons? Just curious, but would really like to know

I did this on my five-year-old VAIO yesterday. Aside from three really stubborn screws, it was pretty simple. I used the compressed air and the thermal paste. It's been running cooler. The fan comes on (or speeds up) for a bit and then stops (or slows down and gets quiet; I suppose it doesn't actually stop), as opposed to running constantly like it used to because the computer was always hot. HOWEVER, I've had two spontaneous shutdowns since then, one yesterday evening and one today. This was never normal for my computer. Both times, the shutdowns occurred when I was trying to open something that uses Flash, but I use that program several times each day, usually with no problems. Even during the shutdowns, the computer seemed cooler and quieter than it was before the clean, so I'm not sure what caused it. Do you think I did something wrong? Any idea what it might be? Should I open it back up and do something different? The fan's not making any unusual sounds and, aside from the shutdowns (which, again, are unusual for this computer), nothing seems to be "off."

Amazing video! =D I had a few more steps to my VAIO SVE151G13W 1) Note the slot that the RAM came out of, because mine only had one 4GB where as in this video there were TWO he pulled out. if you put it back in the wrong one, the laptop will not work (because it won't go past the POST process) 2)There were 6 labelled steps to removing the fan and 2 spots to put the paste on my one. one was the CPU. other was below the copper pipe that ran past the first bolt he removed from the Fan housing. mine had an extra bolt there connected to hold down the fan. 3) I did not have to remove the GPU since it was UNDER the fan housing and not over it, like he mentioned in this video. Other than that. Thank you for this video. =D =D A++++

What brand of screwdriver is that in your video? The blue handled one. Also if you could recommend any type of fixed blade precision drivers which would you recommend? I know about the big brands like wiha, wera, xcelite etc but are there any others you would suggest? Maybe you can put together a video of the things you would recommend any tech to have in their repair bag, and share what you always keep on hand and cant live without.
