I grew Ranunculus from seed for the first time last year i had really good success with big healthy plants and long stems! I was so surprised as i wasnt expecting much i think because i started them in March and planted out in june i also planted them out under a low frost cloth tunnel i am in NZ otago tho so not as hot as Australia i know someone here in NZ who started hers in Feb/march in a wine cooler fridge to get the cool germ temps! I managed just in a cooler room of my house by a window to start

It depends on your season but Autumn is usually a good time to get the seed to germinate!

This is the video I’ve been looking for! I’m growing ranunculus for the first time both from corms and seeds. All the corms I planted in fall are now in bloom and the spring planted ones are about 8 inches tall now. The seeds that I started in Dec have all germinated but they’re very, very small. It’s like the ranunculus and lisianthus are having a contest which can grow the slowest 😂 thanks for this video now I know when to transplant and what it looks like after germination. - Zee, N. Hi Zee! You are a bit warmer than we are (we are similar to zone 8b), and it sounds like your spring planted seedlings have grown amazingly!! You would have seen in the video they don't get particularly big their first year when planted from seed. But it's a great way to build up stock! Just look after those little ones and they will get bigger and better each year. Lisianthus... far out they are the slowest growing flowers... Im giving them a go again from seed this season.. if I succeed there will be a video on that (3 seasons in the making yikes!). Happy Gardening! - Phaedra

Even the first year flowers look so beautiful! This was a lot of fun seeing the side by side comparisons. And the corms got to a nice size after the first year. You've convinced me to give it another go! I tried from seed last year but nothing came up. The temps were right but I don't think there was enough light. Plus the seeds were from ebay, so who knows. I didn't realize you can't get the Italian varieties over there! They are so incredible but over $2 ea!!

We can get some Italian varieties here but they are very expensive. A lot of our cut flower varieties are limited. $2 each would be cheap for us here!! Everything is just so expensive in Australia. Hence… we grow as much as we can from seed! Sunflowers is another one, and we can’t import them. We need a Sunflower Steve here!! eBay seed might be a bit unreliable 🙈

Great way to grow expensive flowers, I'll have to search and see who has seeds here in the states. I bought some corms a few yrs ago, they were not cheap ones, of course I forgot to lift them come autumn. And a huge thanks for including fahrenheit.

Hi Wende!! Did your corms die over winter? Ours are fine left in the ground but our ground doesn’t really freeze. We lift them because we want to use the bed though!!

@@phaedragardeness Yep, I totally forgot about them come October, my ground usually freezes at least once for a little while. They’re calling for a hard winter, so I’ve been lifting all my dahlias this yr.

From 05:14 I talk about picking and conditioning :) you can also store them in a holding solution. Keep them cool and in the dark until ready to use.

Anita! I started a reply to your lovely comment, got distracted and and just remembered now I never finished it! I’m sorry. We had really bad flooding too. Someone downstream will have a lovely flower garden pop up at some point. Glandular fever is so awful, you poor thing! You must feel exhausted. Hang in there, I’m still hoping we have an amazing summer and autumn season after this. It is getting hard to keep planting out only to have things ruined though isn’t it 😭. Thank you so much for this information, Phaedra. I grew up surrounded by ranunculi's and anemones in my Mum's English style garden. We moved to Victoria., Aust. when I was a child. I haven't had much success with growing them from dried corms so far. I have bought some from Garden Express for this year, but haven't got them yet. Hoping that they are fresh and plump! I never would have thought to grow them from seed. I will have a go in our winter here. How long do they need to be kept at under 20 C?

Oh how gorgeous!!! I hope they grow for you this season!! Off the top of my head it’s just until they germinate. They don’t like the heat though so don’t warm them up too much. Light will be more important.

I bought a packet of seed from wild violet flower farm in Australia-only 50 seeds. I wonder if you could do the wet paper towel in the fridge and then put into trays in autumn and then plant in winter? I’m scared I’ll kill them. I’m good at that.

That will be great for anyone else wondering where to buy seed in a smaller quantity! You can put Ranunculus seed in the fridge before planting if you don’t think your climate is cold enough. You could experiment with the wet paper and try 1/2 your seeds that way and 1/2 straight into a tray. Don’t be scared to try your seed! They will look much prettier as flowers and let’s say you loose all of them… you can buy more seed and try again armed with a bit more knowledge. I’ve killed hundreds of $$ of lisianthus seed at this stage…

We do Megan! We lift them at the end of every season, store and replant. Some years we will separate the corms too (as they will duplicate).

Yes I have! You need to leave the flowers on the plant until the heads form seed and they completely dry out.

Might try them from seed if I can find the seed. My annoyance with ranunculous is that here in Canada they don't ship the corms until May, which is way too late to plant them. I do get them at our garden centre late Feb. or early March, but that's not cost effective.

@Noble Flowers those are the popular cut flower types. Along with La Belle... & then Cloni (but that type I know has to be propagated by cloning) They all get much taller than most of the ones we see at local garden centers that are sold for putting in flowerbeds. I was going to say if so, I'll send you some corms, you send me some seeds! 😁 I'd love to try to grow some from seed as a cheaper option becaise most of the corms here are between $.75-6.00 each! Depending g on the variety & if you're buying wholesale or not!
