How-To Spare Tire Modification Lexus LX470 / Toyota Land Cruiser UJZ-100

This how-to video covers all the parts and steps necessary to raise your spare tire closer to the chassis to gain ground clearance and a small amount of departure angle. While placing the spare tire on the roof rack, inside the vehicle, or on a swing out rear bumper will yield the best results this is a cheap and easy modification. This is also completely reversible. I cover before and after measurements so you know exactly how much clearance this can gain. I am currently running (5) Interco Trxus MT Radial tires, 285/75/16, which converts out to a 33x11 tire. The vehicle in the video is an LX470, with AHC suspension, set to N height.
As long as you use the same parts as shown in the video, the tire will be at the absolute highest it can be, while maintaining clearance for the cable jack to be accessed through the rear bumper hole. If you use more or less washers or different thickness washers then you may not have the same results.
Be sure to put a little bit of torque (but not too much) on the jack handle when the tire is in the stored position to keep the spare firmly planted against the frame and rear bar.

I just did this on m 2006 and you can still raise the crossbeam about 1 inch using washers without relocating the charcoal canister

Did you keep the same bolts where the tire lowering part is at? Seems like it’ll only be on a few threads if I ad 4 washers.

I used the stock bolts for the spare tire lowering mechanism. You can get longer bolts if there isn't enough thread engagement after using the washers / spacers. It's been a few years since I did this I dont recall how much thread engagement I had on my setup but I havent had any issues with it. Thanks for the comment! the 97 land cruiser is an 80 series land cruiser, the 99+ up to 07 i think is 100 series - which this video showcases. id imagine it would work but i cant tell you for sure.

What size tires do you have? I want to change my tires from 275 70 16 to 265 75 16 or 285 75 16. Just wondering if those sizes fit were the spare goes.

I did this on my 2006 and you can still raise it an inch without moving the charcoal canister.

It's an 01. 03 and up I believe have a charcoal canister mounted in the rear that may affect how this mod works on those years. Good luck and post up your results

I think the 03-05 had the built in hidden hitch. Different system. I need to look into how to get my spare back under there.
