I hope you enjoy this interview with Dr. Tosh, and Infectious Diseases specialist at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Tosh talks to us today about why he chose infectious disease, how to succeed as a pre-med, and what kinds of things to think about when choosing a medical specialty. From medical school to residency and then fellowship, Dr. Tosh has excelled every step of the way. He shares his secrets to success and gives us insight into the life of an ID doctor. For all the pre-meds and medical students out there, enjoy!

Thank you so much for this. I've always been interested in 'bugs', which is why my undergrad is focused on virology and microbiology. However, listening to Dr Tosh talk about the impact regards to global health-- he has put into words -why- it interests me. I'm going to save this video and rewatch this every time I need a motivation boost!

Paige Kate OMG yes please! I am interested in surgery but the lifestyle they lead kind of throws me off! I mean I may want to have a family one day and a dog(random I know but someone's gotta feed, bathe, train and love it!) and I just find it so daunting that most surgeons act like they don't even have time for basic biological needs!

You attended Mayo Clinic and I am also interested in attending Mayo Clinic, however, since they accept only 50 medical students its somewhat daunting. However, at the moment my gpa is 3.89 (i am a sophomore this year) i work in a neurobiology lab, i volunteer in hospice care, and I have started a club at my college to showcase my leadership skills. Hopefully MCAT score is above 33 since I am studying for it already! Also thank you for the videos.

I would love to work in Infectious diseases but would any job closely relating to that require you to be a specialist in I.D.? Or would it be possible to work in I.D. without being a specialist and with less training?
@saffron1006

You could get an MPH in epidemiology, or a master's/doctorate in Biodefense if you want to lean towards the policy and strategy of disease control. Or if you want to be more on the research side of things, you could simply go for the Masters in microbiology or something, as I'm sure you're aware though lol. What aspect of infectious disease interests you mate?

hey! Love your videos! I have some questions about salaries. On average, how much do residents make? Also, if one were to decide to do a fellowship after a residency program, would one be paid the same amount as in residency or not? Thanks!!
@AndreaTooleyMD
@AndreaTooleyMD 9 жыл бұрын
megmeg9871 Residents generally make between 50-60,000 a year. Fellows do get paid, but sometimes they make less than a resident salary.
