How to Spend a Day in Split - Our 4 Minute Port Guide

Split is one of the principle tourist destinations in Croatia and is a popular port stop for those on an Adriatic Cruise
With is accessible history and picture postcard views this bustling city split has so much to offer visitors. So much that it’s hard to pick what to do if you only have 1 day there.
The cruise dock is a 5-10 minute walk from the city centre. As you walk you’ll see signs for the beach - These take you away from the main route into the city but it is only 5 min walk to the nearest Bacvice Beach which is a small but pleasant Sandy beach in a sheltered bay.
Continuing into Split you 1st encounter the Riva promenade. This is a glorious wide street styled in napoleonic times filled with bars and restaurants and is the social heart of the city.
Adjacent to the Riva is a market place which is big enough to while away 30 mins hunting for bargain souvenirs and tasting local foods
Split is famed for the Diocletian Palace which is remarkably intact palace built and occupied by the Roman emperor Diocletian
This is a vast complex and it occupied most of what is currently the footprint of the old city area. There is plenty to see but after leaving the market you can enter the palace ruins via the impressive silver gate, one of several city gates to discover as your wander through this wonderous place.
The peristyle was the Palace’s central square, where powerful Roman citizens gathered or came to worship Diocletian. It is one of the best preserved parts of the Palace, an open rectangular court decorated with a colonnade. It also featured in Game of Thrones
During the summer months at 12 noon local reenactors put on a display for visitors.!The emporer and his wife are accompanied by the pratorean guard greet and receive the adulation of the crowd. It’s quite a sight

The adjacent Cathedral of Saint Dominus was originally Diocletian’s Mausoleum. It was built in 305 A.D, and Diocletian was interred there after his death in 311 A.D. However Christians in the 5th century destroyed his tomb and converted it into a cathedral dedicated to one of the emperor’s victims whom he had decapitated for being a Christian . It’s considered the oldest cathedral in the world.
You can also climb the bell tower which gives a view across the city and it is also possible to access the cellars of the palace which house remains of the emperor baths
The city is great to explore on foot and is full of narrow alleys and courtyards. There are museums a plenty rainging the expected art and archeology to the somewhat bizarre
The shops are excellent and to satisfy your hunger why not try a Burek a local pastry filled with meat, potatoes, cheese and spinach .. very tasty … chased down with an ice cream of course … can’t avoid putting on a few pounds on this holiday !!
So it’s great to walk off those calories. Progressing through the city you can pass through People’s Square and Republic Square which has been modelled on St Marks square in Venice
A popular walk to burn off this calories is to climb Marjam hill. Or Holy hill as it is sometimes referred to. This is actually a large accessible nature reserve that includes a botanical garden, zoo, ancient and historic churches and some walking trails that take you to spectacular viewpoints .. it’s a good climb up the hill but we’ll worth the effort . It’s not busy or crowded and it’s easy to find peace in this magnificent place. The size and extent of the park only reveals itself when you are up there and it extends over an entire peninsula . You could easily spend an entire day exploring this natural wilderness sat on the doorstep of the main city centre
Split was a real delight and far exceeded our expectations. It’s has too much to see in a day and if you have limited time there it’s a hard choice to select the best option for you.
We absolutely loved Marjam hill .. it’s a hiker’s dream. So that’s that then another holiday to Croatia added to our ever increasing list of holiday plans.

Split was awesome, and those views from the top of the park hill were fab. Congrats on finishing your lunch as that quarter of the pie looked particularly filling! This was one of my favourite port stops of the cruise itinery.
