I am a professor of ancient history and am teaching a course right now on women in the ancient world. We're talking about women's work in the ancient period, and I am excited to use this video to show students the process of turning wool into yarn and demonstrate how women throughout the ages have spent much of their time! Thank you for this lovely tutorial.

Tried it today. Beginner. It is time consuming. But necessary. They kept everyone clothed. Now I know why many moms would threw a fit if their kids ruined their clothes they made for them. It takes a long time just to come up with a presentable yarn.

I use a low whirl spindle too. I love it. But it always stuns me that people get the spindle going by twisting the shaft. I have a 90 gm disc on mine..quite large i realise now..it was my first. And i just give the disc a flick. Lot easier and you dont interfere with the spun yarn.yes i leave a small gap on the shaft at the top so i can use it to wind the thread on. But using the disc to spin means i can load up that shaft to the max. Also, my shaft is removeable. Yours?? Thus i have one disc and lots of shafts for a variety of colours and fibres in progress. Lovely video. I hope lots of people now want to take up spinning. I love telling people my mittens were walking around a short while ago😄

@@imogenclaire1069 don’t let that hold you back! You can find spindles on Amazon pretty easily. Or, and here’s the real tea, they’re actually pretty easy to make (and super cheap, too!). You’ll need three things: 1) a wooden dowel 2) a metal hook. The kind you can screw into the end of the dowel 3) some kind of disc object. Like a wooden disk, or a round cabinet handle For the style in the video, you want to drill a hole in the disc, insert the dowel through the hole, and secure it a few inches from the bottom of the dowel (you could probably use wood glue, or some other kind of glue, to secure it.). Actually, you might not need to drill anything. Just glue it to the bottom of the dowel. And screw the hook into the top part of the dowel. This would be a “bottom whorl” spindle. Or, you can glue your disc to the top of the dowel, and then screw the hook into the top of that, an you’ll end up with a “top whorl” spindle. That’s the kind I have. The disc is just a cabinet handle, so it’s not very big and doesn’t add a lot of weight. It’s harder to keep spinning, but I just use the “park” method (check it out), and everything works out just fine. As far as fiber, I just got mine off of Amazon. You can find fiber websites, too. I think fiberparadise was an online place you could get all kinds of fibers from. Anyways, happy spinning!
