Splitting a Fiberglass Column Steps:
1. Wear protective clothing and eye, ear, and hand gear.
2. Cut each column component to height using a circular saw with a diamond tipped blade prior to spitting. Follow saw and blade manufacturer’s instructions for proper use.
3. Place the column shaft on a level surface and brace the column from each side to prevent it from rolling.
4. Use a chalk line to mark where the first cut will occur, which will depend on the plan type needed. 5. Split along the mark beginning at the bottom of the shaft using the saw.
6. Gently reposition the shaft, brace it so it doesn’t roll over, and mark the location of the next split using the chalk line.
7. Repeat the split using the circular saw. Have someone hold both parts of the column on the opposite side of where the splitting will terminate to ensure each resulting piece won’t fall once the second split is completed.
8. Follow the same procedure for capitals and bases but mark the split lines with a pencil and carpenter’s triangle or square.
