I would definitely use a chopping block. Keeping those high dollar mauls out of the dirt is enough reason.

I use a chopping block & it makes it easier in my usage. Thanks for the video 👍🏻

I discovered after years of splitting, that a chopping block is better. The ground absorbs the blows where the block has mass and resists the blows better. I'm glad to have finally found a You Tube on this subject. Thanks! The other issue is "first strike" and where on the log to place it. I typically do not start in the center unless there's already a split there. That's because it takes more force to split a 14" to 18" wide piece than a 10" wide piece off the edge. The more I can remove off the sides, the smaller the main block gets and the easier it becomes to split. Nice high end splitters in the video, but too far above my pension budget however.

It depends how many rings you have to split/how heavy /big they are as to whether its worth it to lift each piece onto a chopping block. If splitting for yourself only it might be worth it

Your chopping block had 2 knots in it which makes it tougher to split. If you split that chunk moving to you right which would put your saw on the left side of you that chunk splits easily. I use a x27 fiskars and it works as well as anything I have used. I’ve tried the block and found it isn’t Better just for the simple fact that you have to put it on the block and that’s a lot of lifting once the chunks get a certain size.

Pretty wood that is a joy to split. Another VERY important factoid about using the block under the splitting piece is that you will not hit rocks on the ground if the piece suddenly splits easier than you thought it would (chips and severely damages your cutting edge); it will strike the wood underneath instead of the ground. The best setup is to pour a thick 4' x 4' slab and set a block on that; it will totally remove any rebound from the ground and deliver ALL of your power to the splitting piece. I own several Gränsfors Bruk axes and they are worth the money versus cheap axes. After spending the money on them you will take better care of them as well. Call me an elitist when it comes to my equipment but there IS a difference and why they offer such a great warranty on them.

That helko looks like an oversized fiskars with a wooden handle! I want to try it out! I’ll say I’d rather have an axe/maul bounce off than get stuck. Lol nothing worse that constantly having to pull a stuck axe out of the round. Cool video man! I love comparison videos.

The bouncing irritates me lol. Glad you enjoy!

@@knotbreaker I had some red oak that was doing that to me yesterday. Even my 8lb maul was struggling with it. Axes stuck, maul bounced off 😂 had to use a wedge and a hammer to get it busted in half.
@knotbreaker2 жыл бұрын
@@MatthewAmsbaugh I've found that axes are fine for the softer stuff. For what it's worth, the Helko very rarely sticks. Especially with a chopping block.
@hudsonhornet65582 жыл бұрын
I feel like that would be an advantage of the helko too bc it’s got that big wedge shape so it’s hard for it to get stuck

Hello! Thank you for the video, very interesting indeed. But unfortunately I don't know English and therefore don't understand what you are talking about. I see one of the disadvantages of gransfors bruks, is that it gets stuck in the wood. Tell me, which axe do you think would be better, based on your experience and practice, helko werk saxon or still gransfors bruks?

Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment! This video was made to show the difference and advantages of using a chopping block, versus not using one. As far as the axes, they're both wonderful splitters. I can't recommend Helko because their quality and customer service is less than desirable. If you like the Helko, there's another company called "Adler". Adler makes a "Super Splitter" that is exactly like the Helko I am using. They also sell it for cheaper.

Thanks for the reply and for the link.🙏 Absolutely right, the very title of the video is about chopping decks, I should have translated the title of this video right away so I don't ask you unnecessary questions)) Indeed, a wooden deck makes chopping firewood much easier, I myself help my grandfather with firewood and am familiar with it. But I won't say that I like Helco, I just find it better at chopping firewood, even without the wooden deck. And yet the Swedes are the best in quality?))) To be honest, I only found out about Gransforce Brooks a few days ago. Sorry for my English.
