Seems like China is trying really hard to give us the exact microphone for way cheap and we're helping them fine tune it. If they master the capsule and internal shock mount, it's over.

Here's how to tell, at a glance, if the SM7B you are about to buy is fake: Does it cost less than $399 (new)? If yes, then it is a fake!

I got one during the pandemic on eBay, it ended up being fake. Before I knew it was fake I spent like 1300 on equipment and even bought a cloud lifter and couldn’t get it to sound right.

The easiest way is to unscrew the backplate and look inside. Is it silver? Fake. Cables are different gauges? Fake. Also, Shure uses the same coloured cables for decades - easy to look up, and if they are different it's a fake. But I guess the next generation of faked SM7Bs will fix those mistakes ... maybe in a few generations the counterfeits may even sound great :D

The fakes of these are way more convincing looking than some of the other fake mics I've reviewed. Yeah Shure doesn't want people making videos like this because it helps the counterfeiters, but it's helpful for musicians out there.

Hi so i bought a brand new one off of ebay for 178$ and it came it has the same box as the real one it comes with everything and i searched up the serial number on the box on the shure website and it said it was legit but cable thing pops off

Lots of sellers will not remove them from the box so they can be inspected and that’s a Dead Giveaway for me. They know they will be Busted.AVOID them, report them,& move on.

Only within the first 3 days and before you finalize it. If you mark the item as received before realizing it's fake and opening a claim, you're pretty much stuck with it. Since I made this video, I see 10 fakes for every 1 real one for sale on various sites. Be careful!

All that good work... and yet you never removed the metal screen covering the capsule so you could compare them... inexplicable! Your 'in depth' comparison therefore comes up wanting, but your detective work is nonetheless appreciated.

THE BACK PLATES ARE A SURE (No Pun Intended) TO TELL A FAKE. YOU DON'T NEED A REAL ONE TO TELL THE DIFFERANCE. LOOK AT THE BACK PLATES AGAIN, SPECIFICALLY THE THE COUNTER SINK ON HOLES FOR THE SCREWS. MUCH DEEPER AND ALLOW THE SCREWS TO SIT WELL BELOW THE SURFACE.

Also overspray on the edges of the backplate and the rubber grommets are not level with the metal.

These look like factory rejects, products that didn't quite meet QA standards causing rejection at the production level. Some defects will be visible, some not detectable visually. Somebody within the company, probably inside China, found a way to sell these under the Shure label.

@@gear-o-rama8373 Interestingly they don't mention the name Shure on the Ali website description, as though outright copying a product is above board. Even more alarming to me is the MV7 copy for sale on Ali, since I bought an MV7 from Amazon yesterday. I just think it is easier for an insider in a subcontracting company to sell rejects at a profit, since it takes a lot of tooling to come up with such a close match. Rejected product needs to be destroyed, but if the guy driving it to the junk yard finds a way, he makes a tidy under the table profit with minimal retooling.

Dude, I know I'm asking a lot, but could you unscrew the back and show the soldering of the mics? I've just reviewed a hundred microphones and I don't know which ones are real and which ones aren't... but there is one detail that almost certainly says about originality. I want to be 100% sure.

Rubber grommets should be flush with the cable holes and the backplate should have countersunk holes and no overspray on the backplate edges or back.
