I started autobody and paint in 1977. We didn't have cell phone, internet, KZbin instructional vids., etc.. For inspiration and how to, we had magazines and car shows to meet the pros. with their demonstrations. Mainly we learned from a teacher or other guys in our area. The equipment you have now, I could complain about much more, lol! My career went from lacquer (Dulux), acrylic enamel (Centari), urethane (Imron), and finally 3 stage (PPG in 1990s). I seen many painters fight with runs, fisheyes, bugs, anything that could be a problem. Count your blessings. Yes, runs are still a problem, as you showed us. Keep on painting.

Very nice! But I must say, that painting candy paint on a flat or squared surfs, is a lot easier than a car for a newbie. Because dry spots can be tough to keep out, when you're crossing a part that you're not actually on. E.g. Doing a side of the car and you come across the windshield A-panels and such. Practice is definitely a must. Great video.

For the record though. Some ppl have a knack for it. Great motor skills and get muscle memory really fast. Tooting my own horn here. The first paint job I did was a blue candy over a factory "goldish" mica. Sanded it with 1000 grit and sprayed 6 coats of candy on it. The guy just wanted his old tacoma not gold and said do it in med to dark blue. He was stoked when I let him see it at 4 coats. He asked if I could make it a bit darker so I sprayed another 2 coats. I was actually impressed with myself and for a dude with major adhd I call that a win. Yrs ago I worked in a pontiac/buick/gmc dealership both mechanic shop (where i worked) and body shop. One of their painters was at this gig for over 30 yrs and I wouldnt let him spray my grandmothers old K car. As one of the reg youtubers says on here. Its just paint. I believe its the dude that does Paint society.

I love candy paint jobs. When I was a kid I painted my Honda Z50 mini trail like what it had on it new. Caddy Aple Red. They dealer sol the kit in arosal cans. I didn't turn out as I hoped but learned. When I was around 19 I had a Yamaha FZ 750 1996 year. I painted that bike with a Pearl white Paint Job. I was happy how it can out.

Great vid. I've been an autopainter for a living since 73. The first candy job I did was on a 74 Vette in 80, Hard to to do. I used Harley-Davidson Candy Apple Red lacquer . over a silver base. 8 coats of color and 4 coats of Martin- Senour Urethane clear. It was a bitch, We changed the color from white to red , under the hood and jams. A year later I built my 71 Gremlin with a 390 big block = Dark blue metal flake ,the next year Candy red metal on my Chevelle convertable.all, lacquer. A lot of buffing . Lacquer needs it !

What gun are you using. I have been spraying with my Devilbiss and I’m happy with it, but I always get at least one sag. I’m thinking that I’m either putting out to much material, or maybe I have my pressure too low and it’s laying heavy. I was spraying at 12 to 14 pounds, I tried upping it to 18 -20 pounds and it sprayed much nicer , but I end up with orange Peel. Do you have any advise on what to try. Thanks

Nice shot of candy, man! I've played with candy paints and I must say they are not for newbies. you HAVE to spray some test panels before you try and do your main project. I'm planning on doing my Harley tank and fenders, so I decided to make 3 clocks out of the Willie G logo to test my sprays and sell them to cover the cost of the materials. Clocks turned out great even though they may not be my perfect vision for the bike, but you learn a lot of what your finished product will be. Save a lot of wasted time, product, and disappointment. just like you did with the speed shape.

Your vids are great man😊 I've been painting years but am really struggling with candy's recently, particularly light blues and green candy. I have tried everything to make it work but just can't get it to not look blotchy. The way your first coat went down here where its not covered yet and has a patchy look is how mine stays after 4 coats. Can't get rid of the blotchy look. I can spray reds and other colours fine and don't have this problem. It's just this blue candy that's kicking my ass. If I knew what was going wrong, I could correct it but I have tried everything and just can't seem to shake the patchy look😕

Hi, have retired from my garage 17 years ago, I want to spray all the plastic panels on my spy quad in Mazda soul red. I would need a etch primer followed by a bright aluminium paint, next the color but is it waterbased paint? Should i worry? I only have my devillebis gun, or an unused top loader gun. Is the varnish waterbased too? Is the varnish sun proof? In France there are loads of cars with the varnish peeling off. Thanks Barry
