Use dupli color automotive paint at a local auto parts store. It dries fast is glossy, and has matte/satin too. Lots of colors. Last time I looked they had at least 35+ different colors and more available for order. My local O'Riellys also makes up custom colors , some of them can be put in an aerosol can. Then you can have unlimited colors. Cheers,

Nice Job man, but how did you keep the "Yamaha" Logo on the head?

Well, you could be extremely careful and use some kind of tape and outline it with something like an exacto knife. Then again there's also decals which work as well.
@capsuleboy6 жыл бұрын
but how did you actually do it to yours? I thought maybe you didnt change anything in the headstock, otherwise it would have mentioned it in the vid...

Tape it and paint it over. That's how painting works in general and the job ends up looking great. Never done it on an instrument tho bue the idea is the same. In this case its easier because its a straight line. If it was a figure/drawing you gotta get creative with it.

This is a wonderful concise and to the point video! Well done! Especially the emphasis on not putting on the paint too thick! Very important I can say from 1st hand experience. :( And the emphasis on Do Not Rush! Spraying with a can, the nozzle makes all the difference. Some spray cans come with nozzels that dunk an enormous amount of paint on your guitar right away. Make sure you have a nozzle on the can that gives you the right kind of steady soft spray. And a beautiful job on that bass by the way!
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
Marjoline Thanks, I appreciate it. And yes - find cans that don't dump paint onto your guitar. The Canbrush ones worked quite well until it starts losing pressure - so always start with fresh cans! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

I've got a question for you Ninh Ly. My guitar has a neck-through with a binding (ESP Ltd M-1000). I'd love to paint my guitar, but I'm afraid about the binding on the neck. Just really don't know what to do with it and don't want to destroy it. If I was to paint it, I must sand the whole guitar with the neck and binding is on the neck. What should I do? Some steps or advices? What spray do you use for painting and coating? Great video by the way:)
@NinhLyUK10 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for checking me out! Firstly, thank you for the kind comments. Secondly, you play guitar waaay better than I do! To answer your question: you're in for a rough time, but there are three methods: 1) Sand and paint the guitar as normal, but then scrape back the binding before you apply the final clear coat (there are several videos on KZbin telling you how to scrape back bindings). 2) Tape the binding with several layers of high quality masking tape (I think they call it 'plating tape'). You'll be spending quite some time covering all the bindings exactly and like I said, you'll definitely need several layers. Do NOT use the typical hardware store masking tape, that stuff sucks. 3) Remove the binding with a heat gun, sand and spray, then glue it back on (definitely not for the faint hearted). But to be honest my friend, you have one hell of an expensive guitar and I would strongly consider letting a professional do it for you. I know at this jolly time of year that money is tight, and if you had a cheapo guitar, I'd say 'go nuts'. I personally wouldn't risk it with a nice guitar like yours, but that's just me. Hope that helps?
@ParanormalGuitarChannel10 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah man! Thanks for your quick response - you're faster than Usain Bolt! :D Well yes, actually it helped a lot:) I think that you're absolutely right about my guitar and I feel the same. It was some of mine theoretical questions, especially about the binding stuff:D I will consider buying a cheap guitar in the near future and go nuts with it for sure. In my guitar I would buy only a brass block for the floyd rose to get more sustain and change the pickup, EMG-81 for EMG-85 in the neck position. The big brass block upgrade is expensive and I'm thinking about ordering it from a locksmith. Make more videos about guitars man, a lot more than now:D Your videos are so good and pleasant to watch. Not boring for sure. Thanks for your words and keep up the good work!:)
@NinhLyUK10 жыл бұрын
Paranormal Guitar Channel Yeah, best to either take it to a professional or not risk it. It's a REALLY nice guitar you have :) I've always bought cheap guitars as I suck at electric guitar (but can play electric bass). It also means that I don't get scared of trashing these things. I've toyed around with Floyd Roses and you're right to go with a brass block. I've had a cheapo Chinese knock off made with pot metal (that had no sustain AND no tone!), and I fitted a steel one to a friends' guitar that worked quite well. But brass is best and I'm sure a metal worker would make you one for about a fifth of the price. I was going to do another video: "How to upgrade your guitar electronics & pickups. Pro sound, low budget!", but have been pre-occupied with other projects. But yes, I'll try and make more guitar videos! Thanks very much once again, your kind words give me encouragement to make more of these things! Be sure to share this video! :)

Hey man! Thank you so much for your video. Tbh, it's one of the most comprehensive HowTo videos out there for painting guitars. I do have a few questions though. Even though the paint I used was the Dulux Duramax Gloss yellow (In fact, I used Duramax for the primer and clear coat too), it still only came up a matte sort of colour. I'm not all that disappointed with this, but for future projects, it would be nice to know why it came out this way. Have you come across this issue before? Do you have any idea how to fix it? Again, thank you so much for the video :)
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
+SeeYouSpaceCorgi You're welcome dude, I'm glad you've commented on this video. To answer your question: I was aware that Duramax was tough performance paint that dried like a matte finish? You can fix this issue by spraying layers of automotive clearcoat over it (or polyurethane), wet sanding and buffing to a mirror finish. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
@spacecorgi30749 жыл бұрын
+Ninh Ly I'm not entirely sure :( Even on the site it specifies that that particular colour is a gloss finish. I remember that in places that had a heavier coating on it were a bit glossy before I sanded it down, but I just sanded them down anyway. I'm trying to find out if the Duramax clear coat is polyurethane, but if not I'll find a specific brand. Thanks so much Ninh! Subscribed for sure!

I don't use wood filler on guitars any more. It shrinks, is a bit tricky to work with and is a paint in the ass. I use Isopon P38 bodyfiller, which you can get from Halfords.
@NinhLyUK10 жыл бұрын
P38 is a great idea! I think I'll use that next time if I have a hefty ding to repair. Yeah, Wood Filler isn't the best, I generally use it to smooth over minor dings. Cheers for the reply. Is that Canbrush clear lacquer you are using? Do you find it dries hard enough? I'm wasting time and brain cells using Halfords lacquer at the moment and finding it is still soft after a month.
@NinhLyUK10 жыл бұрын
It's better than that Halfords stuff, it's a lot easier to work with and it dries quicker. But if you want a solid rock hard finish, either go with an enamel based paint or even better: polyurethane spray. That stuff really does work.

I learned (the hard way) that the finish of some cheaper guitars makes up a note-worthy portion of the weight (and thus balance as it hangs from the strap), so be careful about sanding to bare wood. It seems unnecessary anyway, if all you're doing is changing the color.
@tuberuser3772 жыл бұрын
You seem to know a thing or two about this so if you don’t mind I’ve gotta question, if I wanted to change only the color on my guitar could I just apply the new paint over the existing paint job or should I sand it down first?
@ruthlessadmin2 жыл бұрын
@@tuberuser377 I really don't have a lot of experience beyond that first fail, but if I were to do another one, I'd just rough up the surface with a relatively fine grain sandpaper, then lay down a few coats of a very opaque primer, then lay down a few coats of paint, and finally seal it with something (I'm not sure what product would be good for that). Good luck!

cesarronalding Believe it or not, the headstock was already silver and in good condition, so I sprayed the candy colour over the top and the Yamaha logo showed through. Just in case it didn't though, I had a spare set of Yamaha decals made up. Thanks for the compliments on this video - be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Good to know! I think I don't think that if I do that in my guitars I'll have the same luck, best have the spare decals.
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
cesarronalding Indeed. I used a candy paint so that's kinda transparent. But if you're using a solid colour - it's spare decals all the way :)

NIce... I recently bought a bass of ebay and it's nice but it has a messy custom paint job. I might try this when I have time.
@NinhLyUK7 жыл бұрын
Yeah go for it. I did the same with this one and it turned out great. So long as you don't make any jackass mistakes like I did (i.e. do a rush job), I think you'll be fine! Good luck! :)

What make is the yellow paint you're using? How is the finish bearing up in the months since you did the job? Not all spray paint is created equal. Nice concise video. I'm about to revamp a Strat and and I was going to go for either white to black, but seeing the yellow has given me other ideas.

+Angus Young The brand I used was 'CanBrush' (as in the picture). It seems to hold up well, no fading or chipping away. Pretty good. If you like my yellow finish, I highly recommend the candy finishes - real electric stuff! Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

We were doing this in parallel. Found a beat up Yamaha the same as yours and knocked it back to the wood, staining it and clear coating it. Fucking love them basses! Pickups are huge!

started disassembling a cheapo second hand guitar to repaint. i put paper tape with little labels on the pickups and some other components, telling me which of the three it is (neck, middle, bridge) and which direction was originally up.

Cool, I hope it goes well. And yes, I either paper tape the wires or marker pen them so that I know where they go. I also take pictures just in case I need to check how it goes on. Cheers :)

hi there, few question here to ask. 1. how much the sanding job need to apply if i want to change the colour from yellow to black? what kind of sand paper should i sand the guitar? need to be sanded from coarse to fine? 2. how long i need to let it dry after spraying the wood primer and before spraying the paint? 3. how long i need to let it dry after spraying the paint and before spraying the clear coat? 4. how long i need to let it dry after spraying the clear coat and before sand with wet paper? thanks for your answer, your bass look so gorgeous.
@NinhLyUK10 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken. 1) Yes, generally you should sand from course to fine. Start with 60 grit, then 120, then 180, then 320. Alternatively, if you don't want to do all that sanding - use a chemical paint stripper and melt the paint off. Should be done in about an hour using this method. Then just fine sand it to a smooth finish. 2) Depends on the paint you're using. Some paints dry differently to others, but I find that leaving it two hours between coats of the same paint and leaving it two days to fully harden before starting on the next kind of paint works well. 3) Same as above. 4) I would let the guitar harden for about 5 days before considering wet sanding (or a bit shorter if you live in a hot place, or a bit longer if you live in a cold place). Always leave to dry somewhere that's dust free and warm. Thanks for the kind comments ken, let me know if you need anything else? Be sure to subscribe and share this video :)

Oh right I saw a video with disconnecting the wiring I have subscribed I may have a go am not sure yet did you use a psint stripper to remove the paint to bare wood I have tip for you what the old french polishers use to use if you have dents rather using filler on bare wood you use wet cloth over the dent and get and iron and the heat from the iron creates steam and grain of the wood will rise above the surface so you then just sand it back ok thanks for all your help steve
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Leslie I should have used paint stripper but I didn't. I know in the future to use it. as for dents - I didn't know that! Thanks for the tip and for subscribing :)

I see you laid the bass down on it's back when you sprayed the various stages. Most people I know who refinish guitars hang the instrument so they can spray all sides. How did you get to the back and sides of the bass? Did you spray the top first and let that dry before flipping the instrument over to do the rest?
@NinhLyUK8 жыл бұрын
+pjmuck Yes I did. I don't have enough room in my place to hang it somewhere, so I did it one step at a time. Front first, then back, then sides. It took forever, and if you hang it up it's like 1/2 the time. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Hello Ninh, how's it going?! I saw you do your clear red Yamaha about oooo, eight months ago..? That paint job on your bass is first class mate, especially when you explain that you had to rescue her, nice one. I've not done a Straguar in the end, but a fairly heavily altered Strat. I'm not finished yet, its the lacquer next...:-/ (Which is how I arrived here). Wish me luck please! She is Electric Orange, the colour Focus ST's were when they first came out. All the pics so far are on google+ (unless you avoid that like the plague, its all fairly new to me so I'm allowed a bit of leeway I think! (&, I'm enjoying leaving posts that by the end, the reader needs counseling, or a drink)), I'm afraid I'm lacking the technology and skills to do a video that anyone would want to watch... Well done man, again, a concise video, and a wicked result. :-)) Cheers Ninh, Mick.

+Michael Jones Hey Mick! Firstly, thanks very much for the compliments of my guitar on this video! Secondly, I love that Focus ST orange! I think that'd look really sweet. I just tried to check out your profile and I've seen that you've stripped it down and you've got hand-drawn plans of it. When it's done, let me know on your profile and we can all bask in the glory that is a job well done!

What grits did you use for wet sanding? How many layers of clear? What kind of clear did you use?
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
+Senile Youth Official 600, 1000, 1500 (2000 if necessary) and them some car polish. You can use normal automotive clear, although for that rock hard finish, go with polyurethane. Hope that helps?

Good job! On preparing by not entirely removing the original paint but just sanding it to give a good key, it is common for a metallic topcoat to get a silver undercoat. So, in your particular case, this probably was the way you would go anyway? Thanks for letting us see it.
@NinhLyUK7 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, yeah. I didn't have to do much undercoating for this one - the metallic silver on a silver guitar went on with just one or two coats. Then the candy yellow only took two or three coats max. Will have to do another guitar soon.

Hey man, great video. Succinct and to the point. No filler! Couple of questions, if you have paint plus primer do you need the primer? Also, is lacquer the same as clear coat? Thanks!
@NinhLyUK5 жыл бұрын
Thanks bro. 1) No, if you have a combined paint + primer, you don't need primer. Be careful with that stuff though, sometimes it can go on lumpy. 2) Yes, lacquer is clear coat. Thanks!

@@NinhLyUK thank you. Is there a particular brand you recommend? I tried finding "Canbrush". Looks like it might be UK only.
