Get your notebook out - it’s that kind of video.
Can you believe we’re nearly 3/4 of the way through 2019? At the beginning of the year, many of us set new hair’s resolutions so that we could finally achieve the #hairgoals we didn’t last year. (Some of us also said we’d work out more but I know that’s a touch subject). In case your motivation has faultered, don’t fret. Here’s one way to start start 2020 with 2 more inches of hair! You won’t need to go out and buy anything either!
Put your hair into twists and maintain the sections. It’s one thing to sport your hair in twists and avoid manipulating it on a daily basis. You’ve probably done that before. Heck, you may even keep your ends tucked as well to prevent wear and tear. But if you really want to ramp up your retention, you have to target the steps in the styling process that do the remaining harm: sectioning and detangling.
If you’re serious about retaining two more inches this year, try this:
1. Plait the base of your twists and then twist as usual. You can do loose, regular or rope twists. I’ve linked a video that explains the difference between the three.
2. Cleanse you hair as needed with clay, mud, dry shampoo, conditioner or something I haven’t heard of yet.
3. This is the crucial step. When it’s time to untwist, leave your roots plaited and clumps clumped
4. Don’t stop there. There’s no need to separate the clumps you got from your twists. Instead, treat yourself to a few days of a twistout, and then aim for extended wear of your stretched clumped hair. Buns and other updos are ideal for this.
5. When you’ve had enough of your clumped tresses, you can gently separate the clumps, wash and condition as necessary and retwist your tresses. This is the most important step. Having you hair in prepared sections that have stayed clumped will result in hair that is less knotty
In case you want more information on this
- I’ve been abusing clumped sections of my hair for years and they’ve stood me in good stead
- Once you’re working with clumps, you may want to stretch your hair at night. I have a video that explains this.
- It’s fine to do do a jumbo/tutu-plait

@@NaturallyHigh Definitely a throwback! The braids are small with 2-3 strands of yarn in each. They've been in since June and I've washed them twice.(Watered down shampoo on the scalp makes them easy to deal with) They absorb spray-on conditioner super well and take about a day to dry completely. I'm really loving them!!

@NaturallyHigh

DJEUFA Gloria Emmanuelle heya, so firstly: ****WHAT IS CLUMPING?********* Clumping is essentially leaving your hair in the clumped tendrils that remain after removing a set of twists. In this video, I talk about leaving these clumps in and wearing them in a variety of styles. I also mention leaving the roots plaited so that the sections remain. I claim that this has some benefits: 1) you manipulate your hair less by wearing the clumped styles as you don’t need to detangle or separate the clumps; 2) having clumped hair stops individual strands from being ‘vulnerable’ (think knotting and breakage - strength in numbers); 3) maintaining the sections means you won’t have to resection your hair when it’s time to restyle. I do not wash my hair in clumps. When it’s time to wash, I detangle the clumps including the plait at the root and loosely twist my hair.

Anjola Adeboye yes, absolutely! In the interim, clumping is essentially prolonging a twistout and leaving the roots anchored in plaits. My message with the video is to do things to reduce manipulation (no more parting, less styling) and knitting (loose hair isn’t actually loose, it’s clumped). I've been doing this bt I didnt know it was called clumping. It's really hard to do this with short hair. I get in the shower, wet my hair everyday, I scrunch my scalp bc to keep moisture and resist every day. On a really busy week sometimes I dont get to retwist until almost a week later. Sometimes I have to retwist some of the twist that comes out. Can you tell me if I can do anything else because some of my twist get single strand knots on the ends and I have to dust off with my shears. Am I missing anything?

Hey girlie! So glad you have another video out! Question: So if I'm using this method... my hair is braided at the base, when it's time to refresh because the braids are old, I loosen the braid, detangle the tendrils, re-braid, then re-twist? How often do you re-braid your clumps?

From A to 4z hey Liebling! My pleasure! In the video, I talk about sporting a twistout and leaving your hair plaited at the base.

From A to 4z when it’s time to refresh, the key is to maintain the same sections. How long you leave your twists in depends on your hair’s tendencies. Mine shouldn’t stay twisted for longer than 3 weeks.
@NaturallyHigh
@NaturallyHigh 5 жыл бұрын
From A to 4z the clumps can be styled in buns and updos and re-stretched for ‘out’ styles or when more stretch is required. I’d recommend doing this kind of stretch at least twice per week.

I don’t totally understand the reasoning for the initial plaiting at the top. Will this increase chances of locking up in between detangling sessions? How often do you detangle with this method?
@NaturallyHigh
@NaturallyHigh 5 жыл бұрын
Gathering Bleu my reasoning is that it’s a fool-proof way to retain the sections while sporting the twist out. The plaits should be undone before a full wash day (when you detangle your hair). Obviously everyone’s hair is different so I’d recommend you monitor the roots to ensure they don’t mat. Essentially, you’re only leaving the roots plaited while sporting the twists and the twist out. After that, you detangle, using the same sections, and do a full wash day. You can still do scalp cleanses whole sporting the twists/clumps but I wouldn’t recommend a full wash day unless it’s a cow ash and you know your hair can handle it. Let me know if this clarifies things.

We need to educate people about locs. Please do not call them dread locs. This name was started by white people because they consider that style dreadful. This style is beautiful especially when it is kept up. The style is called Locs. The term "dreadlocks" is thought to have originated in the late 19th century when British soldiers fighting Kenyan warriors described the warriors' locs as "dreadful". Others believe the term originated on European slave ships during the middle passage, when white crews would wash enslaved Africans off deck and call them "dreadlocks".

I’ve been doing a version of this for a few months now. It evolved from me washing my hair first in braids and then in twists. The downfall of braids is that I feel like my hair does not get fully cleansed and taking the braids out from that jagged pattern damages my hair and causes it to tangle. The downfall of twists is that my hair will unravel often once wet. I now plait the roots (or as much as half-way down) and then twist the rest of the way down. I have been wearing protective styles like crochet or wigs or half wigs (and the front in a protective weave ponytail) for the past several months as well. For about the past three months I have been keeping my hair in the same sections in such a way that I don’t have to unsection or “unclump” the hair that much even when I am switching between styles. I have my hair parted across the crown so I can have the front section separated out depending on the style I am wearing. I like this method because I only really break my hair when trying to Detangle and/or part and/or section my loose hair. Keeping my hair in these medium sized sections allows me to work with them without breaking my hair so much-if at all. Generally, I wash my hair in these sections without removing the twists. However when my hair needs more attention for deep cleansing and/or conditioning, I simply work within each section while in the shower. I can take out each section individually and apply products and run my fingers through it and rinse through it and twist it back loosely. Then i moisturize and seal and retwist each section. I plan on doing this religiously for the rest of the year. I just cut off about 4 inches of raggedy ends last week...so with fresh ends and this method I plan on retaining ALL of my hair growth from now until the end of the year! I’ll keep you posted sis.

Hello Loves! Thank you for all of your comments and critical questions. In case I didn’t make this entirely clear in the video, I do NOT shampoo my hair with the roots plaited. That said, a clay wash is fine because it causes minimal meshing. I detangle my hair, including the roots and loosely twist it before washing. This keeps the sections in place for the next set of twists. The response to this video has been fantastic so far so I think I’ll do a tutorial/demonstration of the full process so you can see what I mean. I’m glad to be back!

****WHAT IS CLUMPING?********* Clumping is essentially leaving your hair in the clumped tendrils that remain after removing a set of twists.

@NaturallyHigh
@NaturallyHigh 5 жыл бұрын
Hey both! Sorry to hear that. In my case, I wouldn’t do a full wash day with the twists/clumps in. A co-wash could work, however. Something like this is what I’d advise: part and twist - untwist without separating clumps - sport clumps in wide ranging styles - pit hair into ‘in-between twists’ - wash hair - retwist hair using salt sections.
@NaturallyHigh
@NaturallyHigh 5 жыл бұрын
Knowing your hair is also key. Some people’s roots mat up more readily. I’d monitor them to see how long you can get away with leaving them plaited.

@makedaahmirhfareed3174

If you use a “soft soap” like African black soap as shampoo you can avoid matting during washing. Most “over the counter” shampoos will cause my hair to stick to itself and tangle. If you have matting pre-wash, then def detangle first with a pre-treatment like coconut oil and/or conditioner. I have 3/4 type hair. Some sections always unravel when wet if I only twist it so i usually loosely plait the roots and twist the rest of the way down to keep the sections defined while im shampooing. And I can take out and work each section in the shower if I need to.

All really good tips, I've been doing most of these for a few years and have retained lots of length. I also use Goody Ouchless Flex barettes at my roots when washing to keep those shorter hairs from straying from their section and tangling or getting snapped accidentally. I also use them to stretch my roots after twisting, leaving them on overnight or all day on my lazy days. I got the idea from Kimmaytube originally and it evolved to fit my personal routine.

I think my hair is too soft for this kind of method. I have tried washing and deep conditioning my hair in small twists before but the products just don't penetrate properly. Washing with my free hair parted down the middle or in four sections has always been easy for me. When my hair is wet, it behaves like 4A hair, and when I allow it to shrink completely, it's more like 4C hair but still not as tight. I've never really known what my hair type is 😐

Uchenna Ngwe while twisted, I do scalp cleanses, co-washes and/or clay washes. Using shampoo knots my hair up really badly, whether twisted or not so I steer clear of it.
