How to Start a 2001-2002 Yamaha YZ 250F

My old '02 WR250f and my Father's '01 WR250f both are best started by: -finding tdc -using the decompression lever to push just past tdc -and then giving it a good right boot Dad's one is really tight and hold compression well so it is essential to use this technique. Mine before it died had barely any compression left so it did not really matter. Anyone who is saying that a 250 doesn't need the lever has never tried to kick through the compression that a good one of these can hold and had it kick back at you. I now have an '05 with the auto decompression and electric start, it's a piece of piss.

Have a 01 yz250F and an XT500. Have the 500 figured out but the 01 YZ 250 drives me crazy. Had an 03 YZ 250 F that started easy.

@@culturemotived2190 sold it cheap cheap paid 2000 and had another 1000 of parts in it sold for 800 bucks needing nothing but someone with a string keg hated that pig wasn’t even that good of a bike when it was running Had the valves shimmed bye a dealer ship and then the mechanic there still couldn’t start it at all and then I had a new oem head and cams installed and valves new piston new timing chain fresh carb rebuild Still was a prick to start only my father could start it Even mechanics couldn’t kick it off The yz400 and yz250f and yz426 and wr250 bikes are junk I hate them scrap piles wouldn’t own one again if it was free

decompression lets out some air fuel mix from the cylinder to make it easier to kick. hot start leans the air fuel ratio to help a hot start, because most race 4 strokes are jetted slightly rich. you dont want to hold a decomp leaver when you kick the bike, just tap it to release some compresion but not to much. hot starts are mostly used when the bike stalls, because when a bike stalls or tips over it likes to flood the carb. hotstarts just add air. you hold a hotstart till the bike starts.

Main thing you have to make sure its on the compression stroke by feeling lots of resistance from compression, pull decomp lever and push about 15-20 degrees to get it right there on TDC and kick hard as shit! If after hot pull the hot start red lever on carb. If it cut off its very hard to restart, best thing is to hold decompression lever and give it a few kicks to clear the cylinder then repeat from the top!

If I remember correctly the kickstarters on early 4-strokes were using 2-strokes shaft so its really easy to break them. It happens quite often.

easiest way i find is to give it 3 slow primeing kicks, find top dead centre, and give it a good old kick with a little gas, works for me first time every time

If you want to break your foot this will work. It's a decompression lever, the autodecompression wasn't introduced until later years.

On my YZ400F I push down until it gets hard, then pull the decomp lever and feel it go to TDC then let the kickstart up and give it a solid kick. It starts first kick every time.

OK. Here's the right way. Push down on the kick start until the compression won't let you anymore. Then at the top of the kick, pull in the decompression lever, and push the kick start down 1 notch. release the lever, return the kick start to the top, and kick away.

ok i had a friend with that bike and thats not a decompression lever, its a hot start lever, and your supposed to kick it from the top of compression, if you did that the first time, it would have started, instead of getting mad at the bike for not starting

@TheSaxplaya1 Well, according to my research, The Yamaha XT500s, were/are built with an auto decompression cam in them, which means when you kick it over, it automatically decompresses, instead of there being a lever. Which in turn, makes the bike a million times easier to start, BUT it will still have quite a bit of compression, but not as much as it would without the decompression cam.

hold the lever in till you get almost to the bottom of the stroke while your kicking and let go of it. Timing is key but if you practice it, soon it will be second nature and super easy to start.

According too the instruction manual are U supposed too use decompression leveler too blow out the air so U kick 2-3 times all the way, then let out the leveler and start it the normal way, But it seems too work for U so I will test your tip. Otherwise U can case too a later cam, then it will easier too start

@sSTRE3TDR3EMZz94 That 'lever' you are talking about is the choke lever they have on the newer yz's. Look it up if you dont believe me. The decompression lever on the 01-02's are located ABOVE the clutch lever. The levers probabley 2 inches long and its black. Your using your left thumb to press the choke lever. Which is probabley just a small black little push lever on the lower part of the left handlebar. Look closely and you will see where it is located on mine.

I have the same bike but what I do I push the kick starter without the decompression lever and I push down til it's hard them I pull the decompression lever and go down just a touch more then bring it up let go of the lever and then kick start it normally

That levers for when u have alot of compression when the motors hot because the motor evapurats the fuel and the compression adds fuel or its the opposite it adds air in that some cases one of the two

Had an 02 used to just kick it over without decomp used to start first or second kick did kick back sometimes and skin my shin ect but they aren't hard to start i get that on my bigger bikes aswell. Normally just slowly kick it over till I get compression then give it a good kick

thats a hot start not a decompression lever u can hold it in and just kick it and it will crank about 1st kick usually

@sSTRE3TDR3EMZz94 Read the description. This video is only for 2001-2002 YZ250F's that came stock with the decompression levers on them. The 2003 YZ250F's and up however, have the auto decompression which is why yours is easy to start.

@YamahaBeast41210 Noo the choke on mine is next to the carburator. and its not a lever its a little button thing that i pull outwards. and YES mine does have the decompression lever, i know my own bike enough to know where the choke and decompression is. the dempression lever on mine is located at my left thumb and is about an inch long

@YamahaBeast41210 my bad i just got the exhaust cam but that it what helps you get it started the intake cam is for more bottom end but i go it and had it installed for like $175 i think but i got the valves adjusted too at the same time so that kind of ran up the price and since the guy already had the bike taken apart so i didnt have to pay for him to take it apart to put in the cam but i would say probably about $200 totall.

how i learnt is to kick it down with out the compression until it goes hard, pull it back up, pull in the compression lever, kick the starter down just a tiny bit, lift it back up, let go of the compression and just kick it over

No, a Honda XR250, a Wr250f, a 2003 Yz250f are NOT the same, and the compression for each is different, and some have auto decompression. I couldnt start that bike without using the decompression lever. I dont think anyone could, unless there engine was almost toasted. Anyways, Thanks for watching.

if you have trouble starting it when its hot theres something wrong with the bike the only problems you have when its hot is the temperature of the bike itself. on my channel i have videos of my bike starting in like 40 degree weather its the way you start it and keep it runining if you need any more help just message me thanks

@trailertrash20010 01-02's dont have hot starts on the handlebars. Their hot starts are on the carbs themselvs. Look it up and tell me if I'm wrong. I owned this bike for years, i know if it was a hotstart or not.

@YamahaBeast41210 my 05 YZ250F has a decompression lever next to the cluch lever. i use my left thumb to push in the lever. its not auto decompression. (good thing) auto decompression sucks because if you try an start it when theres alot of dust it sucks the dust into the exaust pipe into the engine.. which by the way dont use the decompression lever when its dusty. my older 02 XR200R has an auto decompression but the cable attached to the kick starter broke so now its harder to start

05's have the old looking frame and 08's have the new aluminum frame. they started using the aluminum frames in 06.

yeah all 01 - 02 Yz250fs have decompression lever but if you instal an auto decompression Cam (which is probably what you've got) then theres no point for the lever

@skateAndtag4life Did you use the hot start when you tried to start it? Sometimes using the hotstart doesn't help, sometimes it does. But, It will start using the same technic. Just give it a few more shots and get used to it.

I tried this way and it didn't work Easiest way is to hold the lever a bit then kick it slowly till the lever clicks and easy to pull then give a good kick and it goes in the first 1 or 2 kicks

That little 1 inch lever is the HOT start lever for the bike. And yes that is for a 05 yz250f. Look in your motorcycle manual. Now if you can PROVE me otherwise, go ahead.

i recently got a 2002 yz250f and i was told that it was just rebuilt. the compression in good, it has so much that its hard to kick. the bike wouldn't start but it will on occasion. i will kick it and it will start for a couple of seconds and just die down. i tried to pop start it but it just dies. i need help
