This video is a record of me starting up a bokashi compost bin for my home kitchen waste.
In this video, the whole process took 4 weeks, from collecting kitchen waste to completely fermented.
Bokashi is a composting method that had been long practiced in Japan's agriculture to improve their soil.
By practicing bokashi, I've greatly reduce my daily kitchen waste going to the landfill, and creates nutritious bokashi tea and soil for my house plants.

I've tried out different method on making a bokashi bin, which all works out fine :) 1. Ready made bokashi bran I used this when I first started out. It is very easy to use for beginners, just sprinkle on every layer. The bran has a smell of soy sauce, and produces a clear bokashi tea without white residue(it does not affect the nutrition of the tea itself.) The cost is around RM10/1kg, and lasts for 2 weeks (1 bin). However, the shipping fee can get as expensive as the bran itself, which was the reason that I started to seek another option. 2. DIY Bokashi EMA (liquid without bran) I found a recipe and decided to try to make my own bokashi EMA without bran instead. It uses very little amount of EM-1 and molasses each time and mature in a week, which is quite fast. I like how I dont need to store a lot of bran that takes up a lot of space. You need a sprayer to use this EMA. I have successful bokashi bins with this :) 1L of EM-1 + Molasses cost around RM28, and lasts up to 10 months!! P/S: You need to be careful as it is not as visible as the bran. If you spray too little, the bin can easily spoil. 3. DIY Bokashi EMA with occasional plain rice husk/shredded papers This is like an upgrade of method 2. Because my bin is place outdoor, the bokashi bin can form more moisture inside, To avoid that, I've included plain rice husks/shredded papers to absorb it a little. Successful bin with this too. However, inks from shredded papers has form a black residue on the bokashi tea, though it is easily sieve away. If you don't want your tea to look dirty, you can exclude ink printed papers, and put shreded carton box instead. I will experiment more on cultivating my own effective microorganism and make DIY bokashi bran in the future, so stay tune on videos about that too! Hi Sydney, Just an input, maybe it's better to use rice rinse water instead of tap water, since city's tap water usually contains chlorine. Thank you for the great video and sharing! Love your garden, it's shoo lovely!!
@Sydneytay
@Sydneytay 3 жыл бұрын
Good point about the Chlorine! So far I'm just using tap water, and it cultivates well, so I didn't bother to change into rise rinse water 😂😂 However, I noticed when using tap water, the EM in the glass container will start to die out on 3rd week, so I always mix a new batch on the 3rd week to mix in. I will experiment and see if using rice rinse water will extend their shelf life? Thanks for your compliment and suggestion, Marco!!

@@Sydneytay I am not sure if it can make it last longer, but in general from what I know, it is best to use EMAS within 30 days, from the maturation activity. As for using rice rinse water, it's better because it helps with the microbes proliferation, compared to normal or chlorinated water. Yes, give it as shot, I hope it works well for you! :D

I am a little confused by what you mean by rice rinse water. Wouldn’t it matter more if the water is chlorinated or not to begin with than it being rice rinse water because you could rinse the rice in chlorinated tap water in the first place and you would still have the same solution as using solely chlorinated water? Do you wish to mean to wash the rice with non-chlorinated distilled water instead?

Can let tap water sit for a day or so, will reduce the amount of chlorine as it has a much lower evaporate point. Or just boil it for a bit if you are in a hurry, again chlorine will evaporate quicker.

Thanks for sharing, it's really helpful. I just have one question, the tea that's taken from bokashi bin everyday, how long can it be preserved? Can I store it for a while or have to use it right away?
@Sydneytay
@Sydneytay 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for leaving a comment. The tea can be store almost infinitely tbh! I still have my 2nd batch of tea (which is 10 months ago) left unused, and it just smell and look like when it’s freshly produced. Just be sure to store it at the cool dry place, with a loosely screwed container (to avoid bursting)

@@Sydneytay I've just started the 1st bokashi bin and there's something i wonder. Can i put the spoiled food into the bin? And it've been 3 days since i put trash into the bin as instruction but there's no tea out in the below bin, is it normal?
@Sydneytay
@Sydneytay 2 жыл бұрын
@@ettyeleven7871 Hello! Congrats on your first bokashi bin!! To answer your question, 1. I don’t recommend including very spoiled food (already with full of fungal or watery) as the number of bad microbes is already large and might over take the bokashi microbes. However I do sometimes include lightly spoiled food such as bread just started to have 2 fungal spots, overripe bananas or avocados. And I will spray more liquid on them to make sure they have enough bokashi microbes to balance out. 2. For the bokashi tea, it is normal if you don’t have them, no worries! Not all bokashi bin produce tea or a lot of tea. It largely depends on what you include into the bin, and also the weather(temperature & humidity). Sometimes if the food waste is dryer, it will produce less tea. Another point, if the weather and temperature gets colder, the microbes will be less active in fermenting the food, hence producing less tea. I hope this helps in your bokashi journey.

Yes, It was for me to control the humidity in the bin, as the temperature in my place is quite high (33C) and cause a lot of humid forming in the bin. You can use other carbon (brown) alternatives like dried leaves, dried plant cuttings, shredded paper & cartons too
