Gotta agree with Nick on the trade deadlines. In my keeper league I run, the biggest issue I have is when losing teams have “fire sales” and trade their good players to teams that are already stacked and going to the playoffs. I set my trade deadline in early November, and usually have 1 or 2 teams having “fire sales”. If there was no trade deadline, we would have 6 teams having fire sales right before the playoffs. It would completely screw up the playoff landscape.

there is a trade deadline in the NFL so that teams who are mathematically eliminated can't trade a dude like DHop in week 17 to a team headed to the playoffs for like 2 or 3 firsts, when his off season value is literally untradeable

You have to have a trade deadline. I've played in both as well and I've played in leagues with trade voting and without voting. In the voting leagues, they required 4 No votes and then it sill went to the Commissioner. The Commissioner still had the final say, the voting was just to bring any possible shadiness to the attention of the commish. Why do you think the NFL has a trade deadline? You would get teams trading the week before the Super Bowl and altering their team. You could have an owner that wants one team to win over another and make a trade, especially if you're not voting on those trades. It feels like it's the scammers and get-overs that want no trade deadline. If you can build a quality team, you shouldn't need to be able to make trades all the time. The players that want no trade deadline don't have enough confidence in their ability so they look for an edge.

No trades during the draft. I was in a league that wolves fleeced the sheep with bad trades before the draft started, because of it few teams where trash before the draft started. I think a good league is on the side of parity. The league folded in 1 year.

No trade deadline is very risky to recommend as a default. For more experienced players it could be viable, but for less experienced/serious leagues it will easily lead to major imbalances after a couple years.

I do trade deadline is week15 Thursday 8pm literally right before the playoff games actually start. I’d personally prefer no trade deadline at all.

When I set my league up the same set up here - 18 bench spots and 10 active roster. However, I noticed when I add in 4 taxi squad spots, it changes the draft to 32 rounds. Should I not add taxi spots until after the draft? I want to keep it at 28 rounds

Trade vetoes are absolutely necessary. Had a dude try to trade the 2.08 and 3.11 startup picks to move up to the 2.05 startup. It’s a horrible trade any way you slice it. I’ve had leagues ruined by 1 or 2 guys always getting massively unfair trades in their favor. Note: these are all free leagues. Things get more intense in a buy-in league, so I’d be more hesitant to veto a trade.

#1 pet peeve in slow draft is when a person just waits for the clock to tick down and makes a pick with 10 seconds left because nobody would trade up for that pick. It’s basically extortion by threatening to hold up the draft. Please boot players that do this; they will cause nothing but problems in your league.

NO TRADE DEADLINE - We've gone through about 60 starting QBs each of the last 2 years. Telling people they can't trade during the most important time of the year if they get a key injury is fucked! No manager should ever complain about a championship clinching trade when they had a chance to make a trade themselves. Keep dynasty cutthroat.

It's more cutthroat with a trade deadline than without because you have to be more strategic throughout the whole season and off-season. If you get a key injury in the NFL and the trade deadline has passed then it sucks but that is just the way things go you need to make adjustments in other ways. Like if Mahomes went down week 17, their season would most likely be done but maybe they pick up a QB somewhere and he actually has a Josh Dobbs linsanity run in the playoffs. Or whoever the backup is can do enough to get wins. It really sucks but shit happens and you need to always be prepared for anything. Have backups at all the positions and make trades that you need to make before disaster strikes and if the deadline has passed do your research and pick up that player that you see making an impact. Also a lot of the backup QBs this past year were servicable and didn't completely ruin your team.

Cutthroat in terms of trading cause you can control that. It's not cutthroat when you can't do anything about injuries. I can care less about mirroring the NFL, this is fantasy. I went up against a poor bastard who was down TLaw, Jacobs, Keenan, & Amari for the chip. Give people a chance to exercise their trading prowess, it helps people out of contention just as much as contenders cause it keeps the whole league active all season. Josh Dobbs ain't doing shit for ya if Mahomes goes down 😂

@@Trapstarpat Bailouts imply no repercussions/are free. Trades come at cost, it's all in favor of the other team who can leverage the desperate contender. But FAAB is definitely critical during the playoffs for sure.

We instituted a weighted lottery for 1st 3 draft picks (only non playoff teams eligible, like nba), plus, and this is crucial, a punishment for finishing last. This year our last place guy gets to run a lemonade stand for a few hours. We use a “Wheel of Shame” to determine punishment.

No trade deadline puts people in a position where if you need a QB for the championship, other teams know you need it and you might get forced to give up 3 firsts for Baker or something. It's just such a stupid value swing for a 50-50 chance at the money

Really informative video and very timely as a bunch of blokes from our redraft league are starting up a dynasty league this coming season. I think we'll start with 8 teams. What is your advice for expanding the number of teams in future years? First to 10 then 12 hopefully.

Expanding a dynasty league is basically impossible. The whole NFL of fantasy assets will be rostered already. Aside from that you really need to be at 12 teams from the start. In my experience 14 is too deep and 10 is too shallow.

Thanks for watching! I’d say adding teams after starting a dynasty is really tricky. Ultimately you may have to redraft the entire league which isn’t really fair to the guys who joined at the start of the league. A happy medium could be maybe allowing existing teams to “franchise tag” a few players, maybe 6-8 players and then everyone else goes into a draft pool and teams pick from those. My advice would be if you think you eventually want to expand now you probably will in the future so I’d take the extra time to find the extra 2-4 guys to join now and at least make it 10.

Also idk if they talk about it in this video but a crucial thing for any league is a constitution. The basic framework and rules of your league. You don't know it yet, but nearly every possible problem will arise at some point and you need those guidelines to handle them. Division setups, draft structure and schedule, tie breaks for seeding and Division winners, trade rules... it goes on and on lol. You can find templates online to help but definitely have one for your own good

If you’re a fraud team who made playoffs, it’s your own fault for not accurately assessing your team and choosing the correct direction much earlier. All the reasons given here for no deadline boils down to down to having an easy out for not choosing a direction and going all in on it earlier in the season. “But what if pushed for playoffs and realized once I got there that my team isn’t actually good enough? 🥺”, then you deal with it is what you do

Not being able to prove collusion is actually WHY you need a veto option. Beyond intent, which can’t be proved, there is 0 difference between a terrible lopsided trade and collusion, so it has the same impact. Just put rules around qualifiers for vetoes.

LEAGUE MEDIAN IS NOT ENTIRE LEAGUE AVERAGE. You can look it up sleeper has stated their league median is the average of the middle 2 teams scores that week. EX. in a 12 team league is averages the 6th and 7th best teams of that weeks scores.

If the scoring settings make them relevant (especially if it's bestball) having Team Defense in dynasty is actually very fun. Adds a whole new trade vector. They are obviously good long term assets to hold for rebuilder. But each defense has different value over different seasons. Basically, non-contending teams can tier down a highly productive DST for some pluses added in. And/or can sell an aging stud for an extra DST a contender doesn't need, etc. Play in a bunch of leagues like that (it's MFL and you can "flex" a defense so a little tougher to make them relevant in Sleeper"). There's usually 2 or 3 DST trades per season. Usually a top 10 DST will net like late rookie first in a 14 team league, early 2nd in a 12 teamer. Tier down usually will net like a late 2nd/early 3rd.

No trade deadline allows for everyone to be active all year, including playoffs. Teams who will not make the playoffs may essentially be absent after the trade deadline with nothing to do.

my dynasty league thats going on 5 years, we do: QB RB RB WR WR WR TE SUPERFLEX DL LB DB FLEX IDP all scoring bonuses are enabled. ppr. to give a little counterbalance to QB supremacy we do give small penalty to sacks, fumbles, lost yards. to make defense fun and balanced i balanced them to where all your defenders combined will be moderately better than a good defense in DST might give you. and you get some spike weeks if a guy gets pick 6 or 15 tackles. got to give KR yards so those guys have their full value. favorite league, i call it arcade mode because everything is enabled , super high scoring, defensive players can cause random swings with big plays. and everyone in the league seems to dig it. i believe in non standard scoring completely. gives owners at least some reason to have to use a couple brain cells instead of whatever matthew berrys and the fantasy footballers are peddling. i believe in balancing leagues but only with micro adjustments. for example i want to nerf the IDPs a tiny bit but add another starting spot, to give it more of a "small army" concept to mitigate some of the volatility of defensive positions. im all about making shit engineered for maximum fun and innovation but also maintaining an eye on balance.
