The little cover on my MK7 fob is super stubborn lol. Really gotta pry at it to get it off. But still easy. Oddly enough, it never warned me the battery was low. Got in my car to go to work and it all worked fine. Got to work, and noticed it wasn’t locking when I pressed the lock area on the door handle. Luckily I work in IT and had some coin batteries for computer motherboards. They’re not exactly what the fob takes, but close enough. They’re the same voltage, but have slightly more capacity and can sustain higher amperage draw. They’re a hair thicker, but it still fits. Slapped that in, went back out, problem solved. I can see why he put it off, though. If you know where to place the fob when it’s dead, to get the car to start, it’s a non-issue. I’m willing to bet he assumed it was the same place as the MK7, and that’s when he had to look up where to put it on a MK8. That’s why he didn’t originally worry about it, and probably just planned to replace it when it died. Sure, a better plan would’ve been to just replace it ahead of time or keep an extra battery in your wallet, but it’s such a small thing I’m sure he had bigger fish to fry.

This isn’t just a VW thing, but keyless start is so pointless. I’m forever losing my keys, throwing them into a cubby or a coat pocket, never in the same place all the time, like an ignition barrel. The rate it goes through batteries is silly as well. Mercedes had it right with the early 2000 keys which had no blade, but meant you had to insert them into a port, then turn it, similar to a blade key, with all of the benefits of keyless go.

um ... if the alarm goes off if you open the doors *WITH THE KEY* ... well .. that alarm system is defective and you probably should reevaluate your entire car purchase. Thats a very serious design flaw and it raises a lot of additional questions about the product. They probably forgot to program the alarm system in such a way that the physical key also is recognized - this can be achieved with passive (!), encrypted RFID chips which are embedded into the metal. Garbage car design.

@@TassieLorenzo "Battery states" do not matter if it comes to these things - the keyfobs need to work without any power whatsoever ... thats why i said "passive". Also : "usually", german cars are reliable and over-engineered, meaning that the key should be recognized. But it isnt ... meaning that at least this specific car model is extraordinarily bad. Im guessing VW hired a whole bunch of newcomers from college and made them design this model. Either this or a bunch of boomers tried themselves on modern tech ... which obviously failed hilariously
