An organization will only be granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status if it is operated exclusively for exempt purposes, such as the provision of charity, and none of its earnings go to any private individual. The organization’s aim must be to provide a benefit to the public. Naturally, a for-profit organization is free to make donations to individuals. However, those donations will not be tax-deductible unless the individuals have tax-exempt status. Gifts to individuals are not tax-deductible. An application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code requires submission of IRS Form 1023, the general instructions of which state “Don't enter social security numbers on this form or any attachments because the IRS is required to disclose approved exemption applications and information returns.” That being said, the grant writer might need the SSN for another reason. We recommend asking more specifically why it is needed.
