I'm convinced you must be a great instructor... I have watched many permaculture and guild videos and invariably I end up feeling lost and overwhelmed trying to apply it to my lousy-soil-Florida-zone-8b situation and end up not doing anything... You said "just plant something, you can't do it wrong" and that took away all the stress of it! THANK YOU!

Same! But with all of the rules and must-do’s, I found that I still failed. Eventually, I have come to realize that no rules take every geographical location into account. What works for me may not work for you. I think we all are going to make mistakes and realize that there is no best one way to do things, when setting up a good forest. Best of luck in your endeavours! It is never really a mistake, but a learning process.

You said you could not write a book. That sounded like a great book to me. I grew up living on a dairy farm and all our cows grazed in the woods where we had wild apple, plum, hazelnut and butternut trees. There were wild red & black raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and gooseberries. Our farm was on 1/2 mile of lake, with a stream that came out and went to another lake. Spring and early summer was busy with farm stuff, but late summer and early fall was the best to have friends ove for camping in the woods.From the time I was 8 years old, I would camp out with a frying pan, a jelly jar of bacon grease, a knife, a bath towel and a fishing pole. I wore sweat pants over shorts and had a rain poncho. We would camp for 3-4 days and lived off the land. Roasted and fried cattail roots with fried fish and all that fresh fruit and nuts. My friends thought it was crazy and great. Only one girl friend took to it like I did, but the boys I had to bale hay with (farm boys) took to it like a duck to water. I never realized it was a permaculture, until now.. Thank you.

I’m planning on a ring of Kei apple, thorny berries and thorny citrus to keep out the kangaroos, potoroos, possums etc I’m also planting a food area for the animals with plants that they prefer that’s outside my food forest with a water hole for them. I’m also using biodynamic SOIL PREP which is 4 x biodynamic preps in 1 easy to use concentrate . In the city I use this prep in spray bottles to help combat the geo spraying and am getting great veg and fruit early growth . 👍🙏💕🇦🇺

If the goal is to have a garden disguised as a forest, I think going without a plan is better. Tomatoes are only annual where frost kills them. They never die given the right conditions. 😁Great video!😁
@faehollowhomestead19
@faehollowhomestead19 2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree about that! But I kind of like mine having a whimsical cottage garden look along with the food forest aspects. I wish I lived in an area where tomatoes and peppers would overwinter! How wonderful would that be? Thank you!
@peterellis4262
@peterellis4262 2 жыл бұрын
I have to say that in the context of a garden meant to benefit humans, "going without a plan" simply does not work. The goal in a permaculture designed food forest is not to disguise a garden at all, but to build a very functional ecosystem that produces yields that benefit both humans and nature. It's not a disguise, it's mimicry of one of Nature's most successful systems.

Hope our food forest turns for the better. We have planted about 500 things so far and everything except watermelons and passion fruit get completely destroyed, either by disease or rats or mice or birds or ducks. We planted over 10000 sunflowers which are supposed to be easy and every single one got eaten. Only way we can grow them is under nets, once they are 6 inches high we remove the net and we then have to watch for the mice who start eating the seed about 3 weeks before they are ready. Super frustrating. People say pigeon peas and qld arrowroot don’t have pests attacking them. Well every seed on our 400 pigeon peas got eaten. Today I went out and all my qld arrowroot were eaten off at the ground. Might start using poisons and guns to shoot every bird .

@faehollowhomestead19
@faehollowhomestead19 2 жыл бұрын
I am not too concerned with planting the over-story trees unless I really want a large nut tree of some sort. I would plant the larger tree on the north side of the fruit tree or understory tree and plant the fruit tree where the eventual drip line of the larger tree will end up. Hope this helps!

Excellent question! I don’t water the leaves or the fruit, I always water at the base of my plants right at the ground so the water doesn’t come in contact with any edibles. If I do water higher up it’s only when the plant is not in fruit or I won’t be harvesting the fruit for a few weeks.
