How do you usually start a plein air painting/sketching session and what aspects give you the most trouble?

I usually just put a big wash of semi-random colors and see what happens lol

How some artists start without an accurate drawing is beyond me. I always approach my paintings this way but thought it was “wrong”. I think when dealing with perspective & outdoor structures it’s smart. Glad to see you did the same here.

Thank you. There are many approaches for sure and I know not every painting requires the same goals. But lately I’ve been wanting to improve my drawings and I like paintings that have solid drawing as it’s foundation so you can’t go wrong giving it a little extra attention.

Can you talk about your plein air painting gear? I like your easel set up. I have a big one and it’s the one you used to use but it’s kind of unwieldy to take around. Looks like you modded a tripod? I would love to know ❤️ love your channel and I learn a lot from you thank you!

Yes I definitely will! I will talk about this in an upcoming video for sure! But I used to use a french easel. It lost some parts but I’d like to use it more especially for larger canvas. But I switched to Prolific Painter’s “Daytripper” easel with a Dolica tripod which they recommended. It’s lightweight and handmade and so that’s why I got it. In retrospect it’s still not quite perfect for me and I’d like to acquire or build something similar to what James Gurney or Patrick Okrasinsky use. I’ve also thought about just doing one that’s handheld which I’ve been experimenting with on my gouache and watercolor set up. All in all the Daytripper is nice but it has some quirks. Was expensive and took a long time to get. That said a lot of painters I respect use it and it definitely gets the job done and is easier to use than the french easel.

Danny do you edit your videos?

Yes I do. That said many subscribers have been asking for more step by step instruction so several of my more recent videos have been leaning that direction since that is what people have asked for. I’ve found that most of my shorter videos with more quick edits do much more poorly in terms of views with a couple exceptions. I’d like to mix it up but I find it’s more rewarding if I can make a video that people enjoy or learn from.

I’m trying to do it more often lately. I’d like to incorporate it into the weekly practice routine. That said typically anything drawing related does very poorly on the channel so I don’t always show that step.

@@DannySabraArt Danny over the years i have realised Drawing is most important...many of my paintings donot reach good stage because of poor drawing skills.

@@sujanithtottempudi2991 same. I’d say when I critique my own work and look for how I can improve I notice that always when I spend more time on the drawing the painting always turns out better. It’s tough in a plein air setting because you have limited time. But you can always adjust some things in the studio as well. But yes I think for me drawing and also tonal values are two of the most important steps to always be working on
