My daughter had acne like you, after being in a pathology class we learned that acne vulgar is lives on pillowcases the a warm and moist face lies onto the fabric and the bacteria attaches and blooms. So sleep on one side of a pillow case, flip it over. For the next day the wash or change the pillow case. A total game changer. Thinking about it it’s the O best time our skin is ever in touch with anything we change our sheets so regularly now.

I just started a new worm tower a couple days ago from a established worm bin(13 gal. tote) which I had for 4 months. My question is should I start 2 trays now? My theory is the bottom tray will now become my harvest tray as soon as most of the worm should travel up to the new top feeding tray(which I already fed). That actually sounds like a great idea! Depending on the number of trays you have, I would do exactly as you mentioned, but also add one or two additional trays full of dry bedding on the bottom. So two trays on the top, full of the contents of your 4 month old tote, and two trays of dry bedding on the bottom. I just found your channel and I am obsessed! I can't wait to get started. The Vermihut looks like a great system but doesn't the weight from the upper trays compact the materials in the lower trays? It always looks like the height of the material you have in each tray is higher than the space that's allowed between the stacked trains. Does the weight ever become a problem for the worms? Thank you!! I'm so glad you found my channel!! The combination of the worms eating and processing the bedding along with the weight shrinks the air spaces between the bedding in the lower trays. The weight of the upper trays seems to be distributed fairly well and the worms seem to like exploring all the trays as demonstrated in my latest video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipe0mIitmbKDqLs A couple of folks have suggested putting risers in the corners to prevent each tray from weighing down the other but the trays are designed to rest right on the bedding with no gaps so the worms can easily go between levels. There is a little air gap between the sides of the trays but they are tapered so the space is small and the trays are able to slide down as the material compresses down. It depends on how cold the greenhouse will get and what kind of composting worms you have. Red Wigglers do best between 50 & 80 ℉ or 10 & 26.7℃ but can survive if it gets a little colder or hotter than that temporarily. Canadian Night Crawlers prefer it much colder than that but African Night Crawlers like it warmer. I would find out the temperature range of your particular compost worm and make sure your green house stays within those temperatures. If it doesn't, you can bring them into the house or garage on the nights it gets too cold. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for the great question and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Hi, very awesome informative video with very detailed steps by steps. Just want to ask, I always find worms in the liquid collection tray. I didn’t put newspaper on the bottom of first tray. Is that normal or is it the worms they don’t like the tray environment?

Thank you!! That is a very good question! Worms are very curious creatures and will travel all throughout the layers of the worm tower that are moist enough to sustain life, so they end up in the lid and the basin. But they don't escape the tower (unless conditions are lethal) because they run into a wall of dry air. Over the last year I have started to run my worm tower in a way that prevents the worms from going in the basin, and it keeps the basin super dry. What I do is put 1 or 2 trays full of dry bedding (mostly shredded cardboard with some shredded newspaper) on the very bottom of the stack of trays, on top of the basin. I call these inoculating trays. Any moisture that drips down due to gravity from the trays above ends up in the inoculating trays and helps to moisten them up before they go on the top as an active feeding tray. The inoculating trays also prevent the moisture from going down to the basin which highly discourages the worms from going down there. My latest video shows how I run my system now, and you will get a glimpse at how dry the basin is. I just watched PART OF a different person's video on how to run a tower type worm bin. I hope that you will do a video on the difference between worm "tea" and "leachate." You could go into the uses of those things, and what they are, and where they come from. People don't know the truth about that. They're calling leachate "worm tea" and there is a BIG difference. The one I just watched seemed to think that leechate was 1 of the goals of having worms. I would love it if you'd make a video on that, please? What would we do without you? Keep up the good work! Thank you Cookie!! I will eventually do a video on worm casting tea and I'll mention the differences between leachate and tea. There is a third alternative that I have seen some people do but I'm not a fan. They will pour a gallon or 2 of water directly into the top tray of their worm tower and immediately let it drain into the basin and then a bucket and use that right away on their garden. To me that super saturates the whole worm bin and will inevitably lead to more water leaking into the basin forming leachate, so I don't do it. I like using worm tea that I brew using my castings, air pump & some other things I add. Leachate is a big no go for me with all its anaerobic microbes and I try to run my worm tower so there is no liquid down there at all. I think you and I are on the same sheet of music when it comes to how we like to run our bins!! That can be a pitfall of using a hand full of soil or compost, so your fears are warranted! I've never had issues with fungus gnats or fruit flies in my bins but I know they can be a real issue for some folks. Black Soldier Fly Larvae or BSFL are actually used as another vermicomposter people use, which I occasionally see in my Outdoor Worm Bin in the summer. They are a mimic fly that looks like a wasp, but they don't fly around or land on food or people...they just hand around compost piles. Thanks so much for checking out my videos!!🪱🪱🪱

This one doesn't say how long ago you made it. I am assuming it was quite a while ago because you didn't say how many worms would eat that big feeding!? It might be a good thing to maybe drop in how many worms you have in there somehow. I just sent it to a friend who is new and I hope people don't make the mistake I did because it sure took a long time to get rid of all those fungus gnats! And the thing I've noticed, Patrick, is that for an older person, it gets quite difficult to even lift one tray after a while! Casting away a lot! Thank you for all your videos.

I've jammed the shredder on paper but surprisingly I've never jammed it on cardboard! I started with 2000 in my VermiHut and it worked out extremely well. I think 1000 would also be a fantastic start but you could also start with 500. The price of worms has almost doubled in the last couple of years so if I had to go back and do it again I would start with 1000. With 1000 you can tell when they eat the food, so it helps you to not overfeed and they breed super fast when they is more of themselves in the same amount of space to "bump" into!! With my brand-new bin, I have no castings to inoculated a new layer. Can I use store bought castings from Home Depot to kick start a new bin?

I don't think you'll need to buy any store bought castings but you can certainly give it a try! I'm not sure of the logistics chain that brings them to the store in sealed plastic, but I doubt it is teaming with too many varieties of microbes...but I could be wrong and perhaps they have some shelf stable microbes inside!?!! The worms themselves will have microbes on them as well as on the castings currently in their digestive tracks. It will just be a little bit slower ramp up of microbes so you want to feed very small feedings at first. Some folks use a hand full of garden soil or regular compost, but there is a chance of introducing unwanted small insects and other arthropods into the bin ( I have also done this with no problems). As long as you have good damp bedding and don't overfeed, your worm bin will ramp up with beneficial microbes, but with any bin, it does take a while for the ecosystem to become balanced. No worries, I enjoy answering questions!! I usually freeze all my food scraps and either let them thaw a little bit or just put them in frozen...they thaw out pretty quickly and the worms know how to get away from any temperatures they don't like. The lid can be closed completely between feedings. It has holes in the top sides that allow air to flow in. I did for the very first tray. But it was hard to tell the difference between castings and the coir. I prefer shredded cardboard as it is free for me. I ordered the one in your link. From your experience is it better to use all the 5 trays? If not, what's a good setup? It'd be great if you can make a short video showing the best setup and operation after using this system for sometime. Wish the company would compensate you for it (they should). In my case I have my 26 gal tote with enough medium and worms in it to probably fit 2-3 trays. I would like however to expedite the operation so I could have some castings when the garden season starts here 7a. I thought about buying more worms ( I started a month ago with 2000 mostly Blues from UJ), but I know at one point I will have thousands so I should just wait.. Hopefully you have seen some of my newer videos with much better editing, lighting, sound etc.😂🤣😂 I have a couple that show how I manage/rotate my mature VermiHut kzbin.info/www/bejne/laa1g6Otj8iAjq8 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn-qZZxunr2Wlck You are in a unique situation with being able to start with a more mature system from the get go. I use 4 trays on my system and I keep one off to use as a sifter for my other worm bins. Each tray has almost 1,600 1/4inch holes on the bottom so it works well as a sifter! With 4 on the stack I can rotate every 60 days and get about 10 pounds of casting each time. With 5 trays on the stack you may be able to rotate every 45 days. I estimate my VermiHut with 4 trays has about 5,000 worms based on this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipe0mIitmbKDqLs Here is what I would do with your VermiHut to get it up and running. Fill two trays with shredded cardboard or whatever bedding you are using and put those on the bottom basin. Next fill two more trays with the material and worms from your 26 gallon tote and put those on top of the dry bedding trays. This should give you a 4 stack system. If you want you can fill another tray with worm material from your tote, but I think you'll find that the trays can hold a lot of material! Next, feed that top tray once a week for 60 days, then swap it with the one below it and feed that one for 60 days. By now you should have worm castings ready to go for spring, if you need them earlier do a 45 day interval. You can always sift out the uneaten bedding and use what castings you have. Always add bedding with each feeding to keep the top tray full as you feed it. After you do this modified rotation to get things going go back to how I rotate with adding a dry bedding tray to the bottom Harvesting the second from the top and putting the oldest inoculating tray on the top as the new top feeding tray. I hope this helps!! Feel free to keep asking questions, especially when you watch the rotation videos to help clear things up!!

Great questions!! I started with 2000 red wiggler & blue worms and I estimate that I have at least 4000+ now. I harvest a tray about every 60 days and I get about 9-10 lbs of casting each time I harvest. I typically have 3-4 trays on at a time, so an individual tray is on about 180 to 200 days when I harvest it and the castings are truly amazing after spending all that time in there. I am setting up my second Hut right now and I need some feedback on what they say to do with your very first tray. They want you to put a layer of newspaper in the bottom. I did that on my first one and I'm not sure if that's necessary or not when you're going to put one or two inoculating trays under it. What is your preference and opinion, please.???

Oh, sorry about that!! Those are bowls of moistened shredded cardboard with a little bit of shredded newspaper as well. I use that for bedding to start a bin as well as every time I feed my bins. I hope that helps!!

Great point! I start off with a lot of carbon so the worms have a habitat/environment to live in and I put in food scraps every 7-10 day to boost up the nitrogen and feed them! They get a little more bedding with each feeding as well. The great thing about compost worms is they eat both the food scraps and the bedding and I always have lots of bedding in my bins. But they also have plenty of food. You can feed a little food often, a lot of food once a month or a moderate amount once a week, which is what I do. This way they have some new food but also some that is decaying over the week guaranteeing them a little bit of everything all the time. The bigger danger in a worm bin is overfeeding which can lead to pockets of anaerobic activity, over abundance of mites and pot worms, and cause the worms to flee the bin.
