shouldn't you always serve on the direction that tightens the serving around the string? btw, love the demo with bigger materials.
@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. In the video I'm spinning the tool the wrong direction for that particular string bundle. I was concentrating so much on the getting the ending illustrated I didn't realize until long after I posted the video I'd laid the serving on in the wrong direction. The easiest method to determine which direction of rotation you should lay the serving is illustrated really well by this guy's video. (Skipping to the test): kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2G3d2WpgpJki7M

WheeliePete you spin the tool in the same direction as the string was made in.
@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 7 жыл бұрын
Whichever direction you are serving in, right to left, or left to right, and regardless of the string's build rotation (clockwise or counter clockwise) when you are laying serving the string twists should be getting tighter in front of the bobbin in the direction you are laying the serving. In the video I'm using the wrong rotation of the serving tool. If that string was loose in the video (but the eyes not allowed to rotate)you would see the twists in the string in the direction of travel that I am serving getting looser. If you watch that guy's video I linked to in my previous comment, his demo illustrates that perfectly.

Yes, cut it short and then melt it into wrap.
@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Technically you want to wrap the serving in the same direction that the bow string is twisted. Should be effectively tightening the twist in the bow string as you lay it (the serving) down.

Very much appreciated and that drawing is really good. I need to renew the serving on a crossbow string and will add some more rounds to start and end (maybe 10), but it should be pretty much the same. Cheers from Germany, where (repeating) crossbows are the only legal and most affordable option for home defense.

I'm a bow tech at a sports store in GA. I've been a certified archery instructor for about 4 years, and teaching people how to correctly serve a bowstring has been kind of difficult... +Josh Barnes Thanks Josh, Hey, you might want go read the comments I just updated in the video details section. After watching this video again for the first time in a long time, I realized that I'm laying down the serving in the opposite rotation direction of what I should be. I was so caught up in trying to get a good camera angle I didn't notice my rotation. You always want to lay serving in the same rotation that would tighten the string bundles together in the direction you are laying the serving. I should be going in the opposite direction on that particular string due to the direction of the string twist.

Hey man! I realize this video is old, but just wanted to say thank you so much for making this video. While in the middle of a pandemic, I started getting back into archery and had my first serving start to fray apart under the nock. Seeing as no archery shops are open right now, I thought I was going to have to wait a full week to get a new bow string or a serving jig and serving string. I just unraveled the loose end of the server off and essentially made two separate servings into one continuous one with the loose end. Now I can get back to practicing again without waiting for that new string! Using the larger dowel and the cord for presentation purposes worked extremely well. Thank you so much for posting this!
