Ananya, I’m honestly not sure if you will see this or not, but I just want to say that you are an inspiration. Just like you, I’ve been interested in Japanese culture since childhood. Over the years I’ve been trying to self-study but hit those plateaus you mention. Flash forward to now, I’m married to a wonderful Japanese man and we have two beautiful children (one boy and one girl!). We will be moving to Japan in January of 2025. My husband speaks fluent Japanese and I’m embarrassed to even say that I’m STILL learning how to read, write and speak Japanese. It’s my dream and goal to one day have a casual conversation with him in Japanese. He has worked so hard to learn English just to speak with me. I hope I can return the kindness and sacrifices he has done to make our communication easier. I bought your Japanese course and I’m currently working on mastering Katakana so that I can continue progressing in the lessons. I want to work hard and stand proudly at his side. So thank you for showing me that it’s possibly to reach the level you did. And congratulations on passing your N1!! I hope next year I can take the N5. 😊

Another useful way to help with pronunciation for beginners is practicing Japanese tongue twisters or singing amenbo no uta. Amenbo no uta has all 50 sounds in the song including small っ for pauses of certain words like ちょっと. Definitely a fun way to practice!

I’ve always been into manga/anime and appreciated Japanese culture since I was a child. I’m a 25 year old Somali girl and honestly I regret not actually giving it a go (undiagnosed ADHD). I keep thinking it’s too late now but the time will pass anyways so I will just get started. Thank you for this video I’ll try my best! You make it sound possible 🩷 I am quite good at naturally picking up accents and random words but it’s sitting down and retaining information I should work on. Really I can pick up a lot of words in different languages. I’m not put off by things cos I can read write and say things out loud in Arabic (I don’t understand it at all😭 cos I’m Muslim and needed to learn this as a child to learn the Quran) so I’m not so intimidated. But I will commit. I was thinking of doing Korean too I love kdrama and used to love K-pop. But I shall focus on Japanese I think! 🫂subscribed!

Learned how to use the Japanese keyboard not Romaji and then I just started picking up words here and there until I could start forming full sentences and then I started to learn particles and conjugations now I can have a full conversation in Japanese, but I still need to practice like you I think I just learned how a child would learn from their parents

I've been learning Japanese since about 2014, but really got serious about it around 2020. The biggest gains I made in Japanese was by sentence mining native material and rewatching my favorite shows a lot. Every rewatch I would pick up a bit more vocabulary and understand more and more full sentences which was really cool. My favorite show to rewatch was Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and the first time I watched it in full Japanese, I only understood like 10% of it, but by the 6th rewatch I was getting like 90%. It sounds super tedious watching one show that much, but if you pick a show that's awesome then you'll want to keep learning to understand it better. There's lots of other stuff that I did. I watched a lot of Japanese KZbin videos about my interest and read all the Harry Potter books in Japanese. In the first book I probably looked or skipped most of the words but by the last book I wasn't even thinking about the Japanese. Japanese just takes a while to get anywhere especially in the beginning. The writing system definitely takes a while to get the hang of and even Japanese people find it difficult and tedious as children when they learn it in school. Ask any Japanese teenager and they'll have plenty of complaints about having to learn and write out all the kanji as kids for hours.

A BIG AGREEEEEEE. When I was astonished by Japanese language, I was still learning Korean at that time and eventually decided to commit with one language. As I immersed myself more into the Japanese Language, it was very frustrating by how complicated it is than Korean but I find it more challenging and fun. I can't compare the feeling of satisfaction when I fully grasp the meaning of it. I'm still learning, it's kind of having a long trip without an ending🤣

I like how when it came to immersion, you didn't mention that you have to move to that country. When i was younger and wanted to learn languages, they ALL said to move. Which obviously is not ask simple as people say and discourage me a lot from learning any language sooner. Now that I'm a bit older I understand better how to self immerse.

Honestly, folks need to realize that in some ways, katana needs to be mastered. You're going to see every single letter so much. With hiri, after you get the Kanji down and are reading native content, you'll mostly see the same few combos over and over.... Definitely memorize both alphabets but you need to be a katakana expert as it's everywhere

Hey Ananya-sensei, I have been slowly studying Japanese for about 1 year now, and will continue. The reason I want to learn is to communicate with Japanese people and... yes I know, very generic, but watch anime without relying on subtitles. I have been to Japan twice now and I really enjoyed the vibe there and would maybe like to move there some day, or at least vacation there more frequently. I can pretty much pronounce all the Hiragana and Katakana characters... while Kanji not so much lol. In my opinion, as an English speaker, Katakana was easier to understand first before Hiragana, because many of the words are similar to English, but with Japanese pronunciation. I have honestly just been watching anime, J-dramas and listening to Japanese songs, especially reading the lyrics. Even watching shows with Japanese subtitles is a great way to learn as well. I plan to go to Japan again for the 3rd time soon and want to be able to communicate better than I did last time i was there, as I was able to handle only basic conversations and some words, but that will not cut it lol.

Hiragana, Katakana and basic 120 kanji's along with around 500+ vovabularies are done. Also i have learned 25 grammer lessons of minna no nihongo 1 from NihonGoal channel. (But i can recollect only 50%) It is definitly bit hard to learn one byself, consistancy is they key when learning on own. Hope i will clear N5 this year and start explore the opertunities to converse in Nihongo soon after thant. Fingers Crossed! and thanks for this video!

Thanks for this helpful resource! I'm looking for ways to brush up on my Japanese now that I'm no longer in the country. I would say that Romaji is being overlooked here as the fourth writing system. The rules of reading Romaji are different from reading English. Pronunciation is more simple, clear, and phoneticized. A huge mistake I noticed a lot of my fellow expats make when I was living in Japan was to try to Anglicize, or Americanize the pronunciations, which would result in a lot of confusion when trying to speak with it to communicate. Especially the vowel sounds.

は vs が is confusing because Tae Kim is wrong about the function of が. He also completely misses the function of the copula だ. They are NOT confusing if you know the function. は can only mark the topic of the sentence, while the main subject is ALWAYS marked by が, even when it isn't said/written because it is understood from context. I strongly advice against using Tae Kim, and rather watch Cure Dolly based on J. Rubins work.

I'm in Japan now! Have been for the past two weeks. I go back home soon. Being in this environment has made me want to learn japanese so much more. This video came out in perfect timing. I will be spending a lot of time learning japanese once I'm home. Thanks for the video! If I could ask, say I have Hiragana and Katakana down, how do I go about learning actual sentences and grammar? That seems like a huge hurdle. I know you mentioned watching TV and listening to music, but honestly I've been doint that for the better part of 7 years, and sure I haven’t slowed it down to pick apart all the words, but I imagine daily conversations it may be different. Is this in your guide?? Thanks for any info ♡♡♡

Thanks for the vid. I'm intermediate in Japanese and advanced in English and there's something I come up against in both languages: Simply by listening regularly and attentively, I seem to get an 80-90% native accent, but when it comes to the remaining 10-20% I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall. Some of the things I've tried are: getting native feedback, listening back to recordings of myself, shadowing, etc. Despite that, I'm still far from native level pronunciation in either language. I thought that you who passes for a native may have some additional insight into that. There were some points in your video about pronunciation but I asked myself if there was more to it for you than just that. Do you think you the fact that you started learning Japanese relatively early in your life helped you? Do you think you just happen to have an intrinsic talent for accents?
@hiananyaa
@hiananyaa 19 күн бұрын
If you feel like your accent is really still missing something pretty significant I would go back to the basic pronunciations of individual hiragana! If you’re all good there, then hmm maybe focus on word by word pronunciation when shadowing. At least that’s what I’ve done in my experience!

Lets say it was just water. No mentions about stuff that really will help a learner. Yomitan, Anki, Bunpro, Wanikanji or kanji at all, how much to read, how much to watch, wat are the general best practicies. I wonder if one could actually take something from this video?

Did you learn Japanese before you moved to Japan? Do you plan to live in Japan permanently ? Sorry for so many questions. You are just such a interesting personality. = )

as an indian or hindi speaker would you think it was easier to pick up japanese for you? i've heard that at least when it comes to pronunciation & the way both the languages sound kinda seem similar to some extent which makes both the native speakers learn the corresponding languages quite easier than english speakers respectively.

your reason for learning is excately the same reason for mine! lol, i am a retro gamer, and there are soo many good games apparently that are only in Japanese and alot havent been translated. Especially on the Sega Saturn (i know getting real deep into the nerd weeds here). Anyways, i am just starting as of yesterday i started to learn hiragana. I found it initially confusing and discouraging from watching alot of different peoples videos on "how to learn japanese" and every single person has a total different opinion, some say dont do texts books, dont do memorization , some say do. I have found soo many peoples videos that condradict the last persons video i watched on how to get started on japanese. Your video gave me a certain calmness about it. what do u think of lingopie?

woah retro gaming sounds so cool haha That's interesting, I feel like in my situation I just tried to work with whatever advice was consistent across peoples channels and leaned towards which options I personally thought was easier/more fun. I haven't previously heard of lingopie! But I'd say try it and see how you like it. The important thing is to be consistent no matter what you choose

any tips other than shadowing on really getting the accent down? I’m on year 3 of dokugaku living on my own in tokyo, got into ICU (college) through japanese admissions, reading is really good, but my accent still isn’t that good. i can hear all pitch accent and replicate it but there’s small differences I feel with vowels. any way you sped up your progress with vowels/consonants? need to become better for my 就活 in two years. do you think lots of reading in the first 2 years basically screws your accent for good?
@adamP0023
@adamP0023 7 күн бұрын
The best way to fix your accent is to record yourself speaking a lot and looking for errors in your pronunciation compared to a native speaker you want to sound like.

Hi Ananya and learners of Japanese as a foreign language - here we’ve got legendary clips of 1986, in which American celebrities acting in Japan are having a discussion in super fluent Japanese. This includes Dave Spector, Kent Gilbert, Chuck Wilson, etc. but I wish Ananya, you would and will be like them in the near future. @hiananyaa There’s no Japanese that didn’t know them at that time - they were (are) influential as such in TV dominant time before internet comes in. No doubt they paved the way for other Americans and so-called gaijin celebrities and talents in Japan. Btw Kent Gilbert used to be an attorney with Baker McKenzie in both LA and Tokyo while acting in Japanese entertainment industry. Later he became a Japanese conservative opinion leader supporting PM Shinzo Abe. I am hoping that you would make some reaction videos on these clips as raw materials. I believe that would be something inspiring to many people. Also now we are in a good era where you can easily have an access to them via social media or through your own connection networks (“Jinmyaku [人脈]” in Japanese) regardless of your and their political thoughts (namely, some are extreme Democrats and others are extreme Republicans).

Peter Barakan was incredible too. Decades ago he used to host a Japanese TV program that showed foreign documentaries. He's a Brit trained at SOAS. His Japanese speech, cadence, and mannerism is so natural, I assumed he was a foreign child raised in Japan. I've worked with a few people who have completed Japan Studies at SOAS, Cambridge, and Oxford. They usually reach an incredible depth of understanding of Japanese language, culture, history, etc. The other group of people that I'm always impressed by are those trained in universities in former Soviet Union countries. They probably have the best language and regional studies program in the world, especially as the purpose was to train diplomats, journalists, and spooks. The last generation trained under Soviet Union are now Ambassadors of Lithuania, Russia, etc and they're all near-native speakers. The most iconic person from that generation would be the late Alexander Vovin who was translating KAMAKURA Era diaries into English, and his native tongue is Russian. Unless you have special training in linguistics/literature, most native speakers cannot translate a 13th century diary into even modern Japanese. Translating between two foreign languages is beyond my comprehension. In comparison, most Americans in Japan cannot survive outside of their English speaking expat bubble. They cannot read a Japanese newspaper, government document, or novel which is often the reason why their understanding of Japan is superficial at best.

Yes British people in Japan may tend to be in more serious realm like Peter Barakan, a more cultural and academic figure, rather than entertainment. Alumni of Japanese major at Oxford include David Atkinson, a former partner and Japanese financial sector analyst of Goldman Sachs. He is still active in Japan and used to be an advisor to ex-PM Yoshihide Suga.

Am i wrong or is it actually possible without a tutor? I’ve also tried some apps which were not useful since they take for granted that you know basic grammar stuff ☹️☹️ i wanna learn it so bad but idk just seems impossibile without a professional teaching

I'm sorry! The course content covers about 3 months of learning, so ideally most people should be able to complete it within 2 years! As of now it's not possible to download the modules locally due to the platform the course is on :( I'm doing this course all by myself so it's still a learning process, so I'll make sure to implement it in the future!
