I started using these techniques for my 3 1/2 year old and it's been working wonderfully. She's loves randomly wandering by the piano, bang out the tune, and be on her merry way outside of our designated lesson times. I played piano for quite a bit myself but didn't start quite so early so I was lost on how to teach such young children. Seeing the siblings play together was so inspiring and I can only hope so much for my two little girls. Thanks so much for this informative video.

You shouldn’t enforce a hobby into a child that shows no interest in said hobby. If you do their going to obviously be bad at it. Let your child have fun while he’s still young.

@@dokoas obviously, it looks like this child is interested. Honestly, I cannot get my daughter to STOP trying to play the piano when I want to play. Young children hear/see grown ups playing piano, and they naturally want to play too. Not only because it's something that the grownups are doing, but because pushing keys is FUN.

While reading is ultimately important, at this young of an age, it is more important that you create satisfying and meaningful music-making experiences at this stage. Once you develop their ear and ability to follow your instructions, then the reading of real music notation will make much more sense to them.

As an educator, I really appreciate you're tips to parents on how to effectively support their children in practice. In my experience, this is often the most under-appreciated yet important aspect of helping young students thrive in their musical pursuits. Your children clearly enjoy playing as part of your family dynamic. It's a joy to see. Thanks for the great pre-school level lesson, and all the best.

My parents put me in piano lessons at 6 and then at 12-16. I absolutely hated it. I wasn’t terrible at it I just didn’t like to practice. I got discouraged a lot because I felt it was forced on me. My parents weren’t musically inclined. But despite that I’m thankful that at least I know some piano cause I do want my daughter to learn to play. I just want to take the stress out of it like I had. I want the piano to be her friend. Thank you so much for this video. She’s only 20 months old but she loves instruments as she bangs her little xylophone.

Every child is a bit different, but it is important for the parents to foster a home culture of love of music and its importance. While we never want to “force” them to do anything, parents still need to take initiative in showing the joy of making music and doing at a regular frequency to instill the habit of daily play and eventually children won’t really distinguish the difference between “play” & “practice”. I hope this video was helpful in sharing ideas to have similar experiences with your daughter.

@@MarioAjero I totally agree! I think modeling the behaviors and values we want in our children only helps them understand and normalizes that in their everyday lives. My daughter is naturally curious about everything I do like most toddlers her age. She wants to mimic me and do everything I do which is why I think bringing a piano to our home will not only heal my inner child but also let her view music and instruments as fun. Ive always loved the sound of the piano and I missed playing simple little tunes on it. I only disliked it because I was expected to learn, I was expected to be good at it and I was expected to enjoy it because my parents didn’t believe that children have choices in their interests. I had to like it no matter what even though nobody in my household played piano or listen to me play or talk to me about what I like about it. I’m definitely avoiding that path for my daughter as I would never want to expect her to do anything except have fun in whichever way that is.

A good accompanist is highly attuned to the soloist. Note how the boy waits for his sister to position her hands at the right point over the keys before resuming the phrase when they're playing Happy Birthday together. That is so ultra rare at this age. Just extraordinary.

Jennifer Melton Yes. Even though they might not have the physical control of independent fingers. The braced fingers is a good way for them to get oriented with the keyboard. It is actually an effective to teach them that the fingers are merely an extension of their larger muscles in the arm. As long as the parents are patient and have a positive attitude, there's no reason you shouldn't be successful!

I think it's important to build up a relationship with the student where he would like to imitate what you do at the piano. Some suggestions might be to do clapbacks away from the piano keyboard. That way he won't be able to do anything on random keys, but have to focus on the clapping activity. You can also do a role reversal where you imitate what he does. Once he understands this imitation relationship between student/teacher, then the focus will increase. It just takes time and patience.

You should read up on the teachings of Frances Clark because much of this is inspired by her approach. Students experience sound before the symbol or name of the sound is even defined. After students discover what it feels like to play the sound and learning the technique needed to produce the sound, they then learn the symbol and finally the name for the sound. So I approach new concepts with most students (but especially young ones) with a sound-feel-symbol-name sequence.

Wow that's amazing. Back when I took lessons, they didn't teach me this technique so it didn't hit me until much later when I took a music theory class in high school did I realize I was handicapped aurally. They taught me more about sound. Which sounds so silly, but I couldn't distinguish different chords, easily reproduce a tune, and so on. I knew how to incorporate sound into lessons, but only for upper level kids. Now you have opened a new light to me to start them young! I'll definitely look more into this and Frances Clark!

I usually do most of it by demonstration, especially for pre-schoolers like Olivia since following verbal instructions can be a challenge. However, kids her age usually are great at imitation and following by rote. Many piano method books suggest bracing the 3rd finger with the thumb, but some kids find that hard to coordinate. I prefer introducing them to bracing the 2nd finger with the thumb as seen in this video.

We are all bound to make "mistakes" in our first attempts at doing something. I look back on how I used to teach young beginner piano students when I first started teaching, and it was probably almost the exact opposite way that I ended up teaching my own kids and how I teach today. I think the most important thing is to have patience both with your students and yourself. Approach each new musical concept with the premise that you want to prepare the student to have a positive musical experience with it. Introduce music the way we introduce language in this order: 1. Hear 2. Do 3. See 4. Label. Have them listen to a piece of music, pattern, or rhythm first. Let them feel or do it by tapping or playing on their arm second. Show them the musical symbol that represents that concept third. And label or name it by telling what musicians call it last. Too often teachers introduce new music/concepts the other way around. I know I often did before teaching my own kids.

Great video. As a keen musical dad I've been searching widely on this topic and was disappointed to find the obsession with printed music even extending to this age group... as if learning the look of a quarter note was some fundamental thing. It is the sounds which of course are fundamental, so your way makes so much more sense. I learnt to read and later to play by ear, but sadly I was the exception: 99% of teachers are tied to the dots as their teachers were before them. Someone lower down referred to themselves as aurally disabled, spot on, the way most kids are taught causes this condition. So well done. Nicely edited too, thanks for valuing your audience's time.

Thank you for posting! I appreciate your calm way of teaching, for example, your praise for them is quite calm while effective. I imagine that responding to your calm praise would allow them to focus on playing the songs and the next exercise that is to focus on. Thank you!

Thank you for your video. Totally helpful. Especially during this pandemic time. At least i could teach my kids with your method as an introduction. Love it when you use a very gentle method to teach young children so they appreciate the beauty of music.

I love your method! This video is valuable to parents. Thank you. By the way, Hot Cross Buns is missing the "-ny" in "pen-ny". "One a-pen-ny" is four quarters or four eighths per phrase. Hot cross buns! Hot cross bun! One a-pen-ny. Two a-pen-ny. Hot cross buns!

Thanks for the comments. For a number of young students especially pre-school aged kids, the four 8th notes that go in "One a-pen-ny..." can create a disruption in the rhythm when shifting from one note to the next. So leaving out the "-ny" is one way to buy the students more time to move to the next note without disrupting the natural flow of the time signature. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks so much for the video, it's really helpful. I'm teaching a 3yo tomorrow. It'd be great to see a more detailed video of the accompaniments you do. My training is classical and I don't feel very confident with those :)

Wow, that's a golden tip, supporting the 2nd finger with the thumb! I already figured out how to do something similar when describing what to do with playing intervals of the 2nd on white keys. I say to put the 2nd finger and thumb together. This way the students can feel the interval as being close. I tell them to open their hands with larger intervals such as octaves. But putting the thumb under is really a gem to use in starting out improvisation. Little fingers usually have a hard time pressing down on the keys. One of my students short in stature, aged 10, still has collapsing fingers. (I wonder if you have any suggestions for that.) Somehow the continuity is broken at the joint nearest the knuckles. I tell her to have the fingers stand like a ballerina (well not completely, of course). I saw on the above clip the older girl straightening the fingers when seeming to reach for the black keys. I have been modifying my own technique to include straightening and even a kind hovering over octaves and sudden opening. I like to experiment with different techniques, like 5 over 4 as in the Baroque, also a kind of karate left hand to support my little finger in lower bass notes (that was criticized by a teacher). So much of what I was taught about piano technique didn't work for me. I have found over the years the necessity to modify slightly to accommodate different physiologies for myself and students.

Many thanks for this piano lessons video. I have a daughter who has started a private lesson with a teacher but the 2.5 years old showing interest at playing as well. I am not sure how to help him, because I think it's too early and I can't exactly follow how my daughter's teacher teach her. But with this, I can definitely start. Thank you very much!

THanks for this, I'm a composer and piano teacher and I like the open way that you did it. It's a reall coming into the children way of doing things ina nice combination of teaching and developing rhythm, tonal and technical education. nice you put the transpositions on the begining, that 'mathematic' really does a lot of the work later with the theory ... I have 13 kids on my school , I have the problem that everything goes good on the lessons, but when I go next week I notice they didn't practice. I know the games do the magic, but there comes sertain time that the student must recognize - more practise - more results. That is a bit dificult in the Nederlands with the little kids. BTW - this problem is sloved when they go over age of 12 - 13. THanks for your post!!
