Great video--very comprehensive. A few things I wanted to point out 1) in the Warcry errata published a few days ago, the Bladeborn warbands in the Tome of Champions are now usable when combined with the rules released in White Dwarf 482, page 91; 2) The Battleplan cards sold separately do not include terrain cards. You can see in the GW picture that there are only three stacks of cards because terrain cards are not part of the deck. Terrain cards are only included in box sets with terrain. 3) Another great way to get started with Warcry is to play Bladeborn. For $50, you can learn most of the rules, get most of the dice and tokens, and enough minis for a Slaves to Darkness warband. If you like Bladeborn, you only need to add a few things (another warband, battleplan cards, terrain) to convert over to Warcry. It's how I've convinced all my friends to play Warcry. 😄

I have bladeborn and got myself the dread pageant warband. Now I want to make the jump to warcry. I'm not sure if I need the basic rules book, one of the new sets ,) without core rules) and how I can use the bladeborn factions in warcry. Ordered the White dwarf 482 already. the bladeborn warbands seem to small compared to the warcry faction boxes. How do I ramp up the point s for them?

@@DashOr Yep, the Dread Pageant is a Slaanesh subfaction. Bladeborn came with a separate pamphlet, the "Warcry Fighter Rules", that includes the Warcry cards for all the Bladeborn (game) characters and shows that the Dread Pageant comes to 615 points. The next thing you'll need to do is download the Warcry Core rules and the Warcry Compendium, both free on the Warhammer Community website (Chaos rules part 3 contains the rest of the Slaanesh fighters). Use the Compendium to figure out which fighters to add to get you to 1,000 points. You can mark out a 30"x22" space on a table with tape or buy a battlemat of that size (there are plenty of companies that sell them), or make your own. Terrain can be made or bought as well (Etsy is a great source). The only other thing you really need is a deck of Warcry battleplan cards; I picked mine up on eBay. If you buy a copy of the Core Rules, some of the cards will be included in the book.

Me: "Hi GW it's me again, prospective customer thinking about getting into tabletop gaming, Warcry looks a good place to start, can i have the Starter Set please, i see it contains lots of terrain and two sets of Gonads for a decent price, one of them please." GW: "Sold out online...oops, i mean, no we don't make it affordable anymore but you can buy everything seperate or settle for a new box that's more expensive with much less terrain and two Gonads, i mean Warbands/Gognands etc." Me: "Oh, that's kind of off-putting, so because i'm late to the game I have to pay kind of like a third more?" A year later, and things still aren't looking great. They were off to such a good start with Warcry. Affordable, full game in a box. Even enough terrain to give you varied battles. Now it's about even with Kill Team. At least the rulebooks are free, though. Kill Team needs four if you want access to every option and rules for the boxes kill teams (which are often more advanced than generic ones from the Compendium). It's turned into the game you play when you can't bring your full army and only have a little time to play with your AoS minis.

Love Warcry! Its been my favourite Warhammer related game so far, i don't know what it is, maybe it was the ease of how the game goes when i watched a battle report. I have the Red Harvest set but these days i'm just using the ipad with the pdf inside. Awesome Video!

I want to get back into warhammer. I was thinking of starting a club at my university and this game system might be the best way to get people into it. I really like the seraphon so I was going to get the sundered fate box to start. This vid was a great showcase of what has been made and how to get into the game!

Thank you so much! This was really helpful as it’s pretty confusing with all the box sets and editions. I figured out Kill Team well enough on my own because I knew the old edition and am familiar with 40k but AoS is new to me so I had no natural access point. Warcry looks great though and I’m glad I can still pick up old boxes if I prefer the war bands in them because the current season’s bands aren’t really doing it for me either. Thank you again!

Lee you nailed it when you said it was odd that they added the bladeborn models then almost immediately removed them. The addition of those to Warcry is what got me into the game since I came from playing Underworlds. I think removing them is a loss for the game. But oh well, proxies are a thing haha

Well put together, thank you. I was hyped back in the day when it all started. Bought the starter set with iron golems and untamed beasts, liked the corvus cabal and the unmade models so got all but never played it. The pile of shame arose yet but again… Now it is time to come back to hobby and try it. I am worried as this year the Old World strikes back but also there is 50 years anniversary of D&D…

I'm about to start on my Warcry journey and decided to go for Sundered Fate and download the rule books. I may pick up the print copy of the book if the next big box has some interesting "warbnads" and/or "terrian".

Still playing first edition. Haven't even built the first Ghur box yet! And still have about 8 warbands to build and paint. The terrain from the first box was the best and I use that for most of my skirmish games. Catacombs was an odd one and I rarely use this. Some nice terrain though? Although not that transferrable to other games, except maybe Reign in Hell?

First edition terrain is brilliant, and the rules work so well; definitely not necessary to switch to 2nd edition when the game is so good. I'm going to use Heart of Ghur in a kill team Catachan jungle world terrain project I'm working on.

I agree, I have all three of the old ones and they're great. Superb variety too, you have a ruined townscape, a catacomb/tomb and the world's most grimdark mining playset. Way cooler and more interesting to play on than essentially just a couple trees copy pasted over four boxed sets... Once they released the free rules, I completely lost interest in the new boxes, I just play my old stuff with the new core rules. There's enough scenarios, campaigns and stuff in the old books to last a lifetime. It's a nice gesture from James Workshop, but I worry the lukewarm reaction to the new stuff puts rhe game in danger of getting axed eventually.

We haven't played for a while, but would still use the original rules. They are great, and good fun to play. The updated rules were good too, and they open up more options for using more of the AoS factions and models. While I am not a big fan of Warhammer and the way they have taken their games of late, I still recommend Warcry and love the models.

The cheapest way to get 2 Warcry warbands (Stormcast Eternals and Kruleboyz) for $72 is to get an AOS Warrior starter and a box of Gryph-hounds.

i kinda wish they made like those terrain sets again with cards for the randomg battle generator (also something i wish killteam, aos or 40k had but maybe with more generic terrain pieces, idk how they would do the dagger, shield and hammer thingy but would be cool to work in as well as i think that mechanic looks pretty fun ^^) some peeps in a server from a local gaming place, have been talking to maybe start playing warcry, and since i have some aos models from the new edition release, i can't wait to play for once ^^

There are new rules for the newer warbands in recent White Dwarf magazines, but otherwise the older ones don't have specific rules. You can definitely use them as proxies, though, and I don't think there is anything wrong with using their older rules and giving them a suitable reaction from the new rules. Warcry first edition rules were brilliant and unless you are playing tournaments, I think there is no reason why you have to play the new edition rules at all.

Just listening to this in the background while assembling my first warband, the Royal Beastflayers, and this got me a bit worried I'm getting into a game which won't have much of a community or following :/

It definitely has a loyal following but it’s not as popular as Kill Team. At my local club we mostly play the larger games and then cycle through the skirmish games with family,paints or leagues. Warcry is excellent for a fun evening or day of gaming as it’s so quick you can play mini campaigns in a single day which is awesome. It’s also easy to learn so I’m sure you’ll have no trouble getting people to give it a go.

Now that you’ve dug deep into both kill team and warcry what are your thoughts when comparing them? I play kill team but have a heart of gur box. Should I dive into it or is playing one of them similar enough? I believe you loved warcry then dove deep into kill team and enjoy it a lot now as well. Guide me oh great one 🎉

You can find some cheap ones on Ebay or substitute with other proxies. I started to use dice instead of the wounds counters.
