Thank you Josh and Caroline for your fantastic tutorials, we too are in N Idaho, just getting going again on acreage. We are seasoned gardeners, but there is always something new to learn. We are a bit older than you, so it takes us a bit longer to do everything. We have family close by so we are doubly blessed. There are so many homesteaders sharing how to do things its nice. Lord willing our current American situation will get straightened out and we will be able to help take care of many by growing extra. thanks again and we will keep on watching Tim and Penny N. Idaho North Pole people we like to call ourselves!

I’m in Canada, one year I actually planted flowers already in bloom and they lived. So I’m trying again to plant food, your info will help me. My trial and error began back in 2016. I haven’t pursued it since, now I shall try again. 😆

I have to say Thank You! Following your instructions has helped my seedlings not get drowned from up above watering continually. The roots are getting long and strong reaching for the underneath water! And the seedlings are All grow up strong and healthy for successful transplanting! This plan is working wonderfully 🎉🎇🎆😃

Thanks for this video! It's always nice to hear new ideas from various seasoned gardeners on what works for them. Have you tried a soil blocker? Are your tomato roots okay in that size pot until they need to be planted outdoors? Mine seem to need a size upgrade for more root development before the calendar says it's time to put them in the ground. Do you cover them with a lid or Saran Wrap to help promote a humid environment for germination? Every year I'm in awe of how such a bountiful harvest can come from those tiny seeds. The Creator and creation is amazing.

Love your videos. I've been looking into jadam and making some garden amendments over the winter. All homemade options on the table. My favorite quote paraphrasing and so true, "you can't get rid of the vast majority of diseases. They are always present but require good environment to become a problem". I feel as my garden improves over time I experience less diseases. They don't go away, but they no longer cause issues as my soil improves. There are exceptions of course but for the most part, if you pay attention, you can correct many issues over time. Thank you as always.

So glad I caught this video! I think I planted my seeds too early! Tomatoes are going to be fine but squash, cukes and pumpkins are vining and almost ready to blossom! I too live in Idaho so I have a bit to wait still. Can I prune back the plants and still be okay when ready to plant in the garden?

A third reason for started seeds inside is because many times the optimum germination temperature is higher that optimum growing temp. I get the growing temperatures for some plants that the soil temperature prohibits germination. So I have to get the plant growing inside. I do individual cups because the multicell trays are awkward. Buying soil also brings up the "out of sight, out of mind" issue. You don't know the environmental impact of the soil production. Making my own, I control the environmental impact.

Hello, your videos are so helpful. But I really need help with spinach. I live in an apartment and exclusively container garden. I have seed mats and grow lights but nothing is working for my spinach. They sprout and even grow true leaves but then they never get very far. They are also extremely slow. Ive grown three batches now with no success. Anything advise would be appreciated. Thank you

My biggest problem is trying to figure out where to put the trays so they can sprout. I don't have any south facing windows, I have a covered patio but it faces north and is not climate controlled. Could I place the trays on a table with a regular lamp on it, maybe with a higher watt bulb in it? It gets very hot here especially in the summer (in So. California) so I have to be careful where I plant things because they will die from too much heat. Thanks for any advice you can share.

Josh, I'm new to gardening, but I've had success starting most of my seeds indoors this year. I use the peat discs that set in the channeled trays, you water the discs & they expand to little soil tubes & the reusable trays act as an atrium.... However, I've planted some pole bean seeds & this white slime "bubbles" to the surface, it looks like the seed itself is turning to slime. I scrapped it, planted new ones even deeper.....same thing. What am I doing wrong?

Josh, I want to make my own soil starter as well. I have a homemade vermiculture here and have beautiful soil from the worms. What percentage of that soil could I mix in with the starter soil? PLUS...one year I had tomato starts that grew horribly yellow...I tried adding Blood meal to amend but maybe too late. The tomato plants, after putting them in the garden bounced back but I dont want to stress them next year like that. Did my soil starter not have enough nitrogen??

I knew my family had taken the Oregon trail back in the 1800s. We have a park in Salem Oregon, joryville park, as well as a pioneer cemetery. We actually had a family reunion at the park years ago but never knew about the tomato. Ordered some seeds to plant this year! Like my ancestors I recently made the trek west. Came from Ohio and settled in the bitterroot valley of Montana.

I have a question concerning vegetables that I have canned. Last week we had a big snowstorm that caused a LOT of downed trees and power outages. The lines were ripped off my house. I had no power for 9 days. My cleaning products froze so I’m assuming that the vegetables that I canned also froze. Will these vegetables still be good to eat or should I throw them away along with the food in my freezer and refrigerator? I have an upright freezer and it was FULL. The refrigerator and freezer above it was also FULL. Now that is all gone. 😏😭

Horse crap. That's what we till in with the dirt. As a bonus, the area where they. Hang out all winter has fine limestone on it to keep it from getting muddy. Those chips of limestone go into the garden with the crap. Till it in the fall a couple different times and again in the spring when the snow melts.

I always have issues with mold and fungus when I start seeds. I live in San Antonio, but i often had this issue in Utah as well. What am I doing wrong? Starting seeds gives so much anxiety even though I've attempted it half a dozen times. I love gardening, but I suck at starting seeds.

I’m wondering if you’re seed depths are wrong. Just a guess. Generally the bigger the seed the deeper it goes. Also, many times when a seed pops, it shows mycelium and that’s a good thing? If it gets moldy looking and still pops, it’s likely mycelium.

Have you tried adding a gentle fan nearby to circulate air around the seedlings? That helped me after I lost a whole flat to dampening off one year.

Salem, grab a box of chamomile teabags from your supermarket,. Add 2-3 teabags to a litre of water, soak overnight, then decant liquid off into a spray bottle. Spray your seedlings every other day with the mixture (you will have to make up fresh batches every second day). This is a natural way of staving off fungus and damping off. And, as The Reset Button says, air circulation will help a lot.

I just saw a vid showing the gardener gently stroking the tops of the plants a couple times a day (palm down, gently brush along tops, back & forth a couple times). Do this 2x/day mimicking wind and plants respond, stalks thicken.
