Well done Xolette. I just finished making my first practice whip fashioned after Jake Mace's, your method looks neat too. Think I'll use that when I feel the need for a heavier weight. Also, I saw you do some move I hadn't seen yet on the other video's I've seen, thanks. I'm just now learning chain whip (myself) and am encouraged by what you've done with your training. Nice to see that you're not like so many of those sissies who were trying to tell you that you should be trained by some expert and be supervised like an ignorant child. They all sound just like a bunch of warning labels that would be demanded by the type of laws designed to protect us from ourselves,but the truth is that everybody has to start somewhere,even if they have to learn things on their own and take a few risks,but at the same time do so responsibly by using common sense. One of them might say something like,"But what if you end up hurting yourself?" or "What if you hurt someone else,you may get sued or whatever." That's why you train and practice on your own away from others on your own property or where you know where others never really go. No wonder this country is such a mess though,because so many here think that they need their hands held in order to try something potentially risky and it's just sad. It's just like with my old hand sling that I spin over around my head slinging rocks. I'm not dumb enough to do it around a crowd of people in places such as within around local neighborhoods where I could unintentionally bust out somebody's window or whatever. So many people are afraid of trying anything anymore because they're worried as to whether or not they have the common sense to try and learn something potentially dangerous in a safe way all on their own with no sense of adventure and it's just sad. What so many forget is that everything ever learned by people all started with someone who was willing to take at least some risk and as the saying goes,"No pain,no gain."

ghettopunx Wow, thanks for sharing! That's very helpful. It's good to hear from someone that has also gone the DVD route. Have you been training for awhile? If you've trained only with DVDs (no instructor), do you think DVDs are sufficient for your training needs?

Xolette I actually started training a month or two before I saw your kunai rope dart video. I came to a lot of the same conclusions as you did as far as training and issues with information. I've been just training from videos and they have been working great for me. I started with learning the chain whip and found out about the rope dart afterwards. Its good you're learning the chain whip basics first. it really helped me when I learned the rope dart. I have a few of the same DVDs as you like Donald Kiolbassa's and Tom Fazio's. Like you said, every DVD has a little something different. I learned the most from Frank Hatsis' DVD from ropedarts.com. His DVD is already separated into the individual techniques so you won't have to edit it. And he separates the intermediate and advanced techniques so you know where to start. I have been learning quick and having a blast with the rope dart. I practice almost everyday for 1-3 hours and its been working great. Just keep practicing and I'm sure you'll get the rope dart in no time! You have a great system worked out for practicing so I'm sure you'll get it!

The secret is that you don't have to be an expert to start doing it! JUST DO IT. DO THE THING. Once you can do a few basic things you'll see how much fun it is and will want to keep doing and learning more. You can start with as little as a rope and a tennis ball and branch out from there.

Have you ever tried a meteor hammer? I have been very interested in trying my hand at one. I am an avid poi spinner, but I have never tried a single rope like rope dart of meteor hammer. And input you have would be great.
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
Technically, what I'm using is a meteor hammer. I've found that the difference between a rope dart and meteor hammer is that the dart portion of the rope dart is usually conical and spear shaped and the dart portion of a meteor hammer is spherical, sometimes shaped like an egg or some type of squash. The difference between the two is that the rope dart is meant to pierce flesh, but the meteor hammer is suppose to deliver a concussive blow...thus, the meteor hammer has a dart that's almost twice as heavy as the dart on a rope dart. Here's a video on meteor hammer: Shaolin Meteor Hammer (liu xing chui)

@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
I think so. Did you share with me a video of a guy using his rope dart on a tree? I always thought it looked really cool but never imagined I'd try to take on learning it on my own. It's so much fun and a shame it's not as popular. Yes, I've heard of the meteor hammer and I've seen the Kill Bill version of it. Although, watching that scene again, it's not very impressive as she could've done so much more with that meteor hammer in that scene...I recently ordered the "Magnificent Warriors" with Michelle Yeoh just to watch a scene of her fighting with a rope dart. I saw a clip of it in the trailer, and it looked really good! Anyway, I'm curious to hear the gauge of your rope!

Excellent! You are exactly the kind of person I was hoping to help. Love rope dart. When I was 15-16, I made one out of a cheap kunai I had lying around and a length of cotton I made from taking an old shirt and cutting it into one long strip. One of the most natural feeling weapons for me. The circular motions and use of momentum made it feel so dang smooth and easy to transition into strikes. That being said, an interesting aspect was that the strip of cloth I was using had elasticity to it due to its structure, which seemed to assist a lot with executing, interrupting and switching between maneuvers. I don't have any concrete data that would suggest it's better, but it felt like it lent towards movement better. I'm curious what your thoughts are on the idea of using a more elastic "rope" vs something more taut? I've only recently stumbled upon your channel (sweet vids, btw), so I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere. xD
@Xolette9 жыл бұрын
Leechcraft In this video, I mention how the bondage rope I used for the rope portion of the rope dart was stretchy... which seemed nice because, you could essentially slingshot the dart with the swinging momentum, but because it was stretchy, I kept hitting the ground and then it was difficult to be know where the dart was since how fast you moved changed where the dart would be. I believe it's best to not use a stretchy rope as then you have the variable of speed changing the length of your rope. This could be a great question for Supercat40. He has some great videos on rope dart!

Would wearing some kind of gloves to prevent blisters (like the kind used for sailing) through the entire routine off? I've been hoping to get into rope dart, but also have pretty soft hands.
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
No, as the gloves would provide friction which would make sliding the rope through your fingers difficult. Your hands should toughen up over time and the cotton rope should break in nicely. But if you don't like the idea of a rope, check out Supercat40's youtube channel. He's selling a sash rope dart that looks like it'd be easy on the hands.

Dumb question probably but can I use a chain instead of rope? Similar to a chain whip but more shooty outty for lack of better term like a rope dart? Im new to both
@XoletteLife Жыл бұрын
If you're going to shoot out a dart, a chain won't work. Imagine trying to run a chain through your hands like a rope dart-- it wouldn't move smoothly and would most likely hurt your hands. A better way to see it is would you rather climb up a rope or a chain? Every time I see a movie or a video game where they have a chain in place of a rope for rope dart, I always think how it wouldn't work-- but it looks cool. Hope that helps!
@HassiGrimm936 Жыл бұрын
@@XoletteLife that's exactly what I was thinking! Thank you so much. I wasn't sure because in movies and games you're right there is an abundance of people using like a chain whip or whip and shooting it out or kicking it like a rope dart but I wasn't sure if that was just a media thing or not. Thank you so much! You've really helped it be easier to learn both. I'm a third degree in Tang Soo Do and for our 4th degree test (which I still have 4 years before) we have to do an assignment on something we learned ourselves, it could be anything from the practical application of forms, to a specialization of a weapon or anything. And presentation of that thing, and I've been debating making it one or the other. We don't really teach rope dart at our school nor anyone near where I am, but it's always been an interest of mine since I first discovered what one was. So thank you so much for everything!!

Haha, thanks, CuttnStuf! Although, I highly advise against using a kitchen knife if you want to practice any of the wraps. In one of my videos, I used the kunai, but I never did any of the wraps until I made a practice dart. When learning each of those techniques, I would hit myself numerous times with my dart before getting it right. And even then, accidents can happen. In my next video I hope to show a quick montage of all the times I hit myself in practice; I had mistakenly believed that it was rare to get hit because you never see anyone hit themselves in the videos. Anyway, good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Yes, definitely! I've done many sports, and have gotten hit in the face by a volleyball, basketball, softball, and field hockey ball. I have a healthy fear of anything flying at my face which is why I was determined to practice safely. :)

@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it! It's from threadless.com . I think if you do a search for "zombie" you might find it. It could be sold out though. :)

Xolette I really appreciate the response (and all of your hard work that goes into your videos!) ( ´ ▽ ` ).。o♡ Thank you so much! Threadless.com has so many t-shirt designs! 。゚( ゚^∀^゚)゚。 I think I could spend a few hours looking through them all. The name of the shirt is: The Horde It is available as a special order for guys sizes and ladies can order it as normal.

licustoms I know what you mean-- threadless is amazing. I have several of their t-shirts! Their designs are so unique. I usually buy from the $10 category to get the best deals. :)

If you are having issues with the rope rubbing against your hand. I suggest a good set of gloves.

Do you ever lose touch with some weapons when you start to train with new weapons?
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
Sure... you can be "rusty" if you don't practice consistently, but you don't lose the skill entirely. :) You just need several hours of practice to get comfortable again.

That wasn't a pose, that was her instinctively going into a trained fighting stance. It means that her training is becoming instinct. That's when you start becoming good. I dare say at this point, Xolette could do a fair job of kicking butt if she had to.

Peter Cohen Thanks, Peter! And, yes, it's instinct after several years in martial arts. I wasn't trained to do the girly yell though. Haha. :)

Celeste, I think the worse I've done to Jon was push him away from me, because he thought scaring and bum rushing me at the same time was a good idea. Now, he just sneaks up on me, but keeps his distance. Don't worry. I'll get my revenge. :P

Good luck to anyone that does not already have experience using an Ipod. I couldn't understand the instructional videos I watched on KZbin. I'll have to buy one of those portable laptop style DVD players I guess, to be able to review footage outside :(
@Xolette6 күн бұрын
Yes, this video is so old that with how fast technology moves, it's so outdated! Tom Fazio did comment on one of my videos saying that he should make short video clips of his DVD. I'm not sure if he did, but they would make great KZbin Shorts!

Are you eventually going to become a martial arts teacher?
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
No... I just like posting videos particularly when I know it can help others. For example, I could barely find anything on rope dart and spent a lot of money and time when I wished someone could have posted some tips to help me get started. Technically though, I'm already a teacher. I've taught biology the last several years.

I'd like to start with saying great video, I just started playing with a practice dart a couple weeks back after spinning poi for couple years, and loving it, My friend at: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/KojinPropShop, builds props for fellow spinners But regarding the chaffing/rubbing your skin. Have you tried :Technora cord? He uses it for his flame dart and fire poi leashes etc? Personally I think there well comfortable. Keep up the good work.

If you are looking for a really good quality chain whip then I would recommend beijing imports at buykungfu.com. I have their heavy 9 section chain whip and it is super solid. they have other weights if you don't want a super heavy one though. Ive had a couple different chain whips and they all fell apart in a day or two except that one. highly recommend it.
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
You sent me this comment just in time! I've been looking for a quality chain whip for awhile now and resorted to buying one on Amazon. It was what I expected for $17-- meaning, not that great. The whip itself didn't even match the picture they posted online. It also had four links rather than 3 links between the sections. I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but I found it odd. Anyway, thanks for sharing! I'll definitely look into it!
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
I bought the nine-sectional whip II from the site you provided, medium weight, and it's amazing the difference between the $55 one and my $18 one I bought on Amazon. When I practice with it a bit more, I'll post a video on it. Can't thank you enough for recommending that site to me! I would've never found it! Not to mention, it shipped really quick from Texas. I was expecting I would have to buy one directly from China and wait a month for it to get here. :)

Lol I was trying to explain my other style of rope dart/ knife....as far as the length of rope...I'll have to just break down and make a video and show ya ....it's more for throwing the knife(no spin style of coarse) and retracting it fast and easy......cause in a zombie apocalypse we won't have the time to walk up and pull a thrown knife out of a zombies head...lol..right?!?
@Xolette10 жыл бұрын
I agree, the best thing about tying a rope to the end of a knife is you no longer need to retrieve! I could kind of see what you're talking about. Let me know if you post a video!
