What you said about feeling like you need to accomplish a lot when you're young really struck a chord in me. I'm a 19 year old 1st year animation student in New Zealand and I always feel like I'm behind. I have so many projects I'm juggling trying to develop while trying to keep up with social media's algorithms and it often feels overwhelming. Your videos give me hope and remind me I need to take of myself a little more.

This was super helpful! I’m currently seriously considering quitting my current job as a Personal Assistant (bc finding entry level animation jobs in South Africa seems to be very very difficult 😅). I’d rather work for myself because the 40 hours I’m working as a PA doesn’t add to my portfolio as an artist at all and I’m pretty sure I’d be able to make more money than I currently am at my job if I put those same hours into my own business as a freelancer instead. So hopefully it all works out lol. So while I’m busy making my own freelance business a success, I’m planning on getting a job as a waitress instead of being a PA because then at least I’m interacting with different people instead of being in an office all day on my own.

This video is so useful! Thank you! I wonder if there is a chance you might also mention how to master time management in the animation industry as some of the workload might be heavier than we think at first, thus making it harder to meet some deadlines. Any tips or ideas to use time more effectively might help a ton too! Sending you love from Dominican Republic 🫶

Art school is hella expensive but if you can find public/in state universities near you it's much more affordable, though the quality of the program can be hit or miss. Some art schools require gen eds, taking those at a public or community college could help with cutting the costs of things, but yeah :( it's criminal how much these schools get to charge

What you said about not needing a degree to be in animation is true unless you need a VISA. Heard examples of former doctors and mathematicians ending up being in Pixar and Disney. And other science majors. Proves how what matters more is skill, and that it gives hope as there are also many, many resources out there.

Hi! I hope this doesnt sound creepy 😅 but I've been following your content since you first posted your calarts submission sketchbook. I was in High School back then, and I really looked up to your art. Although my family didn't allow me to pursue a degree in art and I'm working in an entirely different field, watching your content to this day still inspires me to keep making art (but this time for fun and not as a career). I just want to say, I really love your videos and your art and you still inspire me to this day 💕 Edit: sorry for any grammar mistakes english isnt my first language 😅

To be honest, I want to share something with you. I think you should discuss with your family that family members have no power or the capability to control your future. Your future is yours not theirs. Therefore, if you want to pursue art or not that’s your choice not your family’s. You shouldn’t let your family decide your future especially your job and I think it’s not right to let parents take control of your future when it’s not theirs. Because they have their own future and job so why bother?

As a middle school student I've been researching this on my own time. I think I have a crippling fear of being unable to sustain myself. I personally have been evolving my art since around 5th grade. When covid started I decided to take it seriously and my passion has fueled it this far. During summer I like giving myself 6 hour days (sometimes I do 8) where I act like it's my actual job and I love it. I burn out quickly so it's hard but when I push through it and just do art for the sake of doing it, it's really rewarding. Lately I've been looking into making money off of it now that I've given myself time to gain experience just doing it. I love the idea of character design and animation although I also work with the traditional mediums a lot too. I am expanding what I've worked with as I grow and I'm excited to see how much more I can do. I'm already looking into uni tuitions so that I have a basic idea of how much I need to save and I already am on social media so that I can push my work out and be noticed. Thanks for making these videos and thank you to whoever's reading this, it means a lot to be able to access information like this despite my age and experience.

Can I share? I had a hobby of art since around the same time as you, and I wrote and drew my own parody episodes of (already parody) shows. I got better at art through watching videos and practicing, and was only able to take a class my senior year of high school for the first time. Seeing what I could do under instruction is what made me consider and eventually go to art school. It’s good that you're doing what you're doing. Keep it up! You're already on the right track, and things take time. It's healthy to be worried about the future at your age, and I think you’re going to be great at whatever you end up doing :)

Great vid! A lot of things here apply for even professionals. I'm looking at portfolios of pro's who are back on market with very very old portfolio's with little skill ranges. Continuously refining skills or (like what Lam says) having a side project/hustle are highly important. I cry a little when I see resumes of 15yr+ vets with work that's equally as old. All it takes is 30mins a day in most cases!

I'm in that painful "waiting" stage :') I'm in a bit of an issue where I'm not applying to work because I can't work in person yet- I'm going through immunotherapy/allergy shots where I need to get a shot every week. So moving states is just not possible for me for the next 6 months. But in the waiting time I've been making my own store and working on my online presence. I've also been taking commission work and small contract work. But dang, if I don't feel hopelessly like I'm gonna fail. I do wanna be a 2d animator at the office- but I legit don't know how to get there beyond just begging for a job until I get one. I kinda just feel like that's what the rest of my life is gonna be, a struggle to survive. And it's just discouraging. I mean, I don't know, I know I shouldn't have gone into animation if I wanted an easy job. But I really can't see myself working a basic job and being happy.

@@Loveyou-vf1tk Yeah aha, I'm doing ok. I've kinda? decided to just do the odd job here and there as I work on my own personal animations. I don't have massive hope for the anim industry (the mainstream one) but I'm p hopeful for the indie stream. One thing I'd say to you is, don't think one path is the only path. You can animate in your own time and do the sparse commission here and there for some money, and look into resources for artists locally if you can! There's plenty of options for you to work with.

Hi Michelle, thanks for this video! I'm currently a junior in college and I'm going for art (I want to work in vis dev). I also want to do a side business of my personal art and I've been struggling with the idea of whether I should be taking on a business minor or whether I should just focus all of my effort into improving my art while I'm in school. My program is definitely studio heavy, so I guess my concern is that taking on a business minor would mean that I might potentially be working on tooany classes at once and not focusing enough on either discipline. Do you have any advice for this?

This is a great video, actually I know what I wanted to do as an artist. I want to sell my art full time however before I commit to doing it full time I need to focus on my skills mainly, my health and mental health. As you don’t know I never had job I never did volunteering before at 24 years old, I am turning 25 in 2023 my plan is to focus on my art skills and decide if I want to do art full time selling my art. Because art is the only thing I can think of when it’s comes to job and career. Actually I need to prioritize my health and mental health because of my diabetes and depression, so I need time management skills. I want to work so I can make time for myself.
