I have been growing pumpkins for years now. I too have those cucumber beetles, squash bugs, and the vine borers. I am not sure if your aware or not, but the 3 varieties that you showed in the video will not necessarily pollinate each other. Let me explain. The Connecticut field pumpkin is a pepo variety and cannot pollinate a different variety that is not pepo. The other two varieties are maxima varieties and they can pollinate each other but not the pepo variety. So in other words, Pepo to Pepo and Maxima to Maxima.

Thank you for the helpful comment! I knew about this previously and was actually thinking about speaking about this in an upcoming video. But hopefully your comment will help others out. Also not sure if many viewers know that all squashes and pumpkins fall under Cucurbita family (Cucurbits for plural)... and Cucurbita Pepo such as Connecticut Fields are "true" pumpkins, whereas Cucurbita Maxima aren't pure pumpkins, but hybrids. And you totally see the difference with the female flowers... Pepos have green unpollinated fruits while my Maximas have yellow ones. What you mentioned regarding pollination is also why you can grow pumpkins near other Cucurbits such as yellow squash and zucchini, and not have to worry about cross pollination. Thanks for watching and thanks again for the great information!

Yes squash and zucchini will pollinate pumpkins and vice versa. Just remember that if you save the seeds and use them the following year, that you could have strange looking fruits.

Ack... I left a word out of my last response... *also why you can grow SOME pumpkins near other Curcurbits..." So yes, squash and zucchini can cross-pollinate with some pumpkins, but not all pumpkins. I believe they can pollinate with Pepo (my Connecticut Field) but not with Maxima.

At my house we have been putting our old pumpkins on the bottom of our trees for a while now, and the pumpkins just grow from there. Of course we help by watering them, but other than that we don’t really use a strategy. By the fall we get a lot of pumpkins and now we don’t really have to go to the Pumpkin patch anymore. It’s pretty cool because we get a lot of different types of pumpkins.

My subdivision was built over an old pumpkin patch. Our home was new construction but the builder did a poor job on the lawn. It was nothing but weeds but I also noticed squash looking leaves on some of them. They turned out to be pumpkins. They would grow quickly but the landscaping guys would mow them over. They grew easy peasy.

This year I am growing pumpkins using cinder blocks. I just added some half composted tree leaves and grass clippings into the cinder block "mini raised bed" for each pumpkin plant. The pumpkin plants seem to be doing fine so far. I also added some cured quail manure to the top.

Hi Friend. I see that you have a lot of grass where you are planting the pumpkins. I plant pumpkins in the past in my lower raise beds and let the vines grow out on the grass. The problem I had in my area is that I could not mow the grass where the pumpkins developed, and by the time the pumpkins are ready to harvest,the grass are allready knee hight and I can’t see where the pumpkins are and afraid of snakes. I think next time when put the seeds in the ground, I am going to spray herbicide to kill off the grass first.

Ive heard to put seed in standing up not on its side. If its on its side water will sit on it,which can ruin the seed.

Not sure what I am doing wrong because I have tried so hard ! I have never seen squash beetles but vine bore worms that kill the plant is my problem. Then for some reason I guess the bee's are not pollinating because I will see a small pumpkin then it falls off . I have 6 grandkids so I would be so excited to have a pumpkin patch! We have plenty of room and this is my 4th year no pumpkins. 😥😥

Can you grow pumpkins in an area that has a slight incline? I’ve heard this helps with keeping moisture off the pumpkins so that they’re not sitting in them and getting “mushy.”

I grew pumpkins for the first time last year and I used garden membrane for the vines to trail across and for the fruit to rest on. I didn't get any rotting fruit at all😊 I also turned the fruit every few days to help prevent rotting and to help keep their shape.

Six seeds in the packet, yikes! I had great success picking up nice pumpkins on the side of the road after Halloween and Thanksgiving. They were still firm, had great seeds for roasting, and since they seemed to be hardy, saved some seeds and grew them last year.

Well I didn’t do any of what you said to do. When my October 2021 pumpkin began to get soft, I just put the whole uncut pumpkin in my fence line which is full of pine needles. And presto, we have pumpkin plants 🌱 popping up. So, now we’re just watering it ( date 5-16-2022 ) Any comments on type of fertilizer to use⁉️or other type of care😇

Silly question here… can you tell me your watering schedule throughout the season, or until harvest?
@HapayuGardening
@HapayuGardening Жыл бұрын
Not a silly question at all! In general, I follow the recommendation of minimum of 1-2 inches of water per week. In prior years, I used drip irrigation. I ran it daily for about 20-40 minutes. This was actually too much for my front yard back in 2021 and my ground was saturated, so I dialed it back. This summer, I've actually been using a regular sprinkler. I'm watering about every 2-3 days for 30-40 minutes each... depending on the weather and temperature. Watering deep is key... you want the water to seep deep into your soil, but not to the point where the ground is squishing with water. Hope this helps!

Pretty heavy watering is necessary. Just stick your finger in the first inch of soil and if your finger comes out moist, no need to irrigate. When fruit is forming the plants need more water.

Pumpkins. A few ladies in my town started a community garden in 2015. In the Autumn, I suggested that we collect all the leaves we could to work into the soil as it was very hard, and difficult to work. In the Spring of 2016, I noticed some volunteer melon or squash plants where someone had dumped their leaves and garden wastes. I transplanted 4 of the plants. By summer, I noticed that they were some kind of yellow/orange pumpkin. I know nothing about raising pumpkin. They bore several pumpkins, but rotted because no one picked them. OK fine. Since I am the world's greatest seed-saver, I collected 20 or so seeds. I planted about about 10 seeds, 20 inches apart, next to a row of butternut squash, also from seeds I saved. Wow! the plants are humongous. the vines of the pumpkin and the squash are now entangled into each other. I didn't know that they would grow so large. Some of the pumpkin are turning orange, as if close to ripening. I thought that they didn't ripen until Autumn. Next to the squash row, I planted some pickling cucumbers in hopes that they would grow up a concrete mesh trellis. Some of the cucumber seeds germinated, and I had 2 nice plants. Next to my cucumbers is a volunteer pumpkin which I didn't have the heart to remove. The "cucs" germinated, but died shortly after. Even the 2 surviving plants died after blooming. My question is, do pumpkin plants kill cucumbers if they are too close together? I replanted cucumber seeds, but they also died after germinating. I don't believe it was due to cut-worms, or the boring moth larvae

MrGruffy, I am not familiar with any guidelines stating that pumpkins and cucumbers are "enemies." I looked into this a little bit and it seems that it's an old myth or adage of not growing pumpkins and cucumbers side-by-side. But everything I came across seems to support the fact that you can successfully grow them next to each other. I'm curious what could have killed your cucumbers... any signs of cucumber beetles? I know pumpkin vines and pumpkins attract them.

Thank you. I still don't know why they died when there are other cuc plants about 15 feet away from where mine were. it wasn't lack of water as I watered them daily with rain water I collected. Seriously hot and dry in north MO.

That’s a great question that even I don’t know the answer to. Use them sparingly. They say the caffeine can have both a positive and a negative impact on pumpkins. I am using them in my compost only so that it’s thinned out and broken down.
