So good to see you back and reconnecting! My one year I spent in LA (Long Beach) in 2015 was magical, I miss it. I went out there with only a few thousand to my name, and in the span of that year, worked as a substitute teacher in the Long Beach school district, and even as a tour guide at WB studios! Moved back to the NYC area where I've been my whole life. Wanted to visit this year (in fact, I was originally planning on being in LA this week) but chickened out. I know that if I go visit, I'll want to stay, and it scares me. I do enjoy the seasons (ok, not winter!) I'm a 15 min drive to midtown Manhattan from where I live in NJ and take day trips there all the time. Saw the foliage yesterday in Central Park as the marathon was going on. But, my goal is to face fears/doubts/whatever you want to call it next year, so I WILL go visit LA next year...and perhaps plant the seeds of a return move (not easy on the salary of a public school teacher, but I did it before with much less!) Michael, you are a continued inspiration to people like me. Thank you.

Great video! I have been feeling pretty isolated lately and this was exactly the message I needed to hear. Only been out to LA once but I would love to book a return trip.

thanks for this video! I moved to LA (Burbank) from fun beautiful and bustling city of Prague. That was 4 years ago and ever since I’ve been lonely and depressed. My friends binge watch Netflix shows literally from 6am to 11pm every day. I tried gym, full of people with headphones. I tried walking city, everyone is in box on wheels and streets are depressing empty. I hiked everywhere (including Burbank peak in this video), but alone it still feels lonely. My friends from work live far away and don’t have time nor energy to connect often enough. I tried gardening in our backyard but LA seems to have bunch of evil viscious rodents squirrels that eat anything including plastic pots and metal rods. Every day I ask myself why am I doing this to myself, well I am saving $ to buy apartment in Prague, but I feel by the time it’s done I will never be the same again as I became unhappy depressed lonely mess. LA is very asocial and I see no way out apart from leaving to a place where community amd human connection is available.

Check out the Long Beach Aquarium it's amazing! It's two stories. Better than the one up by SF. Best times are midweek avoid the weekends. FYI it's not the old round building with all the whales painted on it, that's the convention center. At one time the largest mural in the world by the artist Wyland. Hit up 2nd st in Belmont Shore for lunch, lots of small restaurants there.

I find the traffic is more tolerable south of LA city personally. It seems to get more crowded the closer to Santa Monica/Culver City/MDR/DTLA/etc. Go south to around Long Beach or Costa Mesa and it's easier to drive and plan outings with friends. I have friends that aren't within walking distance, so we mostly keep in contact by Discord and then we use that to plan weekend trips that are in other parts of SoCal (carpool!) or we hit up Arizona or Nevada. But it's definitely easier if you have some homebody or introvert tendencies, that's for sure!

In Jan 2023 I stumbled upon your video while I was living in New Zealand and planning to move to LA soon. I was immediately intrigued and subscribed your channel. Now I have been living here in LA for a whole year, I truly enjoyed the beaches, museums, food, cultures, and the feeder cities around LA. It’s like a dream come true! However, sadly, next month marks the end of my journey as it’s time to go back to New Zealand. LA will always hold a special place in my heart and hopefully one day we can return.

Those sunsets are so beautiful and definitely my happy place! Palisades Park stands still during sunsets it's truly magical. My advice remove the driving out of the equation entirely and move to a walkable neighborhood! Here in SaMo I have 5 coffee shops within 2-15 minute walk depends on my morning mood which one I go to. There's two set of stairs to chose from to get your steps in! I drive like twice a month to meet friends in Malibu or WEHO. 🥰 I love LA! 😍

We visited Culver City to go to Montys burgers, plus you're so right with it seeming to be an up and coming kind of town. IMO California peoples are just plain cool and kind from what I'd experienced. We shopped at a Ralph's in Santa Monica and it seemed priced quite nicely. Thanks for the videos, I comment before finishing them

Having lived here for 1/2 a century, I can tell you LA is getting worse and worse…well CA in general. The crime is terrible, taxes are horrific, rent is too high, traffic…let’s not even go there, the homeless situation is unbelievable, etc… Maybe in the 60’s LA was great, but now…nope. You nailed it at the end though. The ONLY reason to be here is that it doesnt get cold and especially because of the beach. THAT is the happy place. If you can battle the traffic and fight for that 1 parking spot left, you will reach the happy place. The only fond memories I have of LA are at the beach (just dont go to Venice, too many homeless). As an avid outdoorswoman, the weather is perfect for that, but the crime can keep you home. Sad. Try Griffith Park hiking trails. They also have night hike groups. Good luck kid. Too bad we cant turn back time in LA.

Good content. I'm a lifelong Chicago suburb dweller but I can't deny that every time I make it out to LA it just feels "better" somehow. I don't find the traffic there to be much different than ours, or any big city I've been to - except St. Louis. St. Louis seems like a perpetual ghost town even in the middle of a weekday. I will say however, probably the worst traffic I've seen in my life was coming down into the Hollywood area from the mountains on the 101. Slamming an open freeway straight into a series of dense downtown grid stoplights probably not the best city planning move ever conceived.

Hey I’m a 23 year old transplant from the Midwest (In Westwood the neighborhood by UCLA) definitely recommend trying to use the buses and public transit system here it’s not perfect but it’s not terrible. I use it regularly and save soooo much not having to pay for gas or parking Since your one of the lucky ones working from home try using the metro system and buses to get around the city there’s a metro station in Culver City and you can take the E Line all the way to East LA now. Your from NYC if you were able to figure out the subway you can figure out the LA Metro

Yes (since you asked). For anxiety, check out the book "When Panic Attacks" by Dr. David Burns. (Misleading title--it's about all types of anxiety, not just "panic attacks.") He's also got a podcast and a number of other books that I've found very helpful over the years. I'm glad to see you back here. Where were you between the 2 LA moves---San Diego?

The tagline "greatest city in the world" throws cities like London, Paris, Tokyo, etc, for a loop. YT vlogger German in Venice, relocated to LA/Venice Bch in the 1990s, is posting vids of his current trip to London. The capital of the UK, because it has been a cultural & financial powerhouse for centuries, must look at the cities of the US, including its largest one, and go, Hold my beer. But different strokes for different folks.
