Everything you said is 100% truth, especially with small personal projects and toys. I had such a hard time understanding API calls, async/await, and closures. I literally just found an API that returned pictures of puppies, and messed around with it until I understood what was going on under the hood. After that, I was able to implement the same concepts in other personal projects, and found myself writing out code from memory and actually understand what I was writing.
