There are times when it's difficult to get motivated I will listen to a favorite artist on youtube and a piece of music I really enjoy. After listening to it Ill practice a few bars at a time right then left hand, perfecting it then move on to the next few bars. A sense of a accomplishment helps one to get motivated.

I have this thing where I would look at sheet music on youtube but be forced to fastfoward or go back everytime I want to see a couple notes. If I finish the song or 3/4 the way, that way ik i am capable of finishing and mastering the piece enough to print out sheet music to make it easier to look at. Just a style I picked up on

I think the thing I struggle with the most is, I will be really interested in learning a piece, start it, and then get bored and move on to a different one. This is why I tend to only play with chords and lead sheets. Because then I can play the song and sing it but I can never play the whole song on the piano otherwise and this really stunts my playing and motivation. I don't usually lose motivation for the whole piano, just the individual songs I play so I never truly know a piece but I can play the beginning to a lot of songs.

My planned solutions are 1. become a phenomenal sight reader - so you can read thousands of new tunes at your current level, and never be bored. This fits in with yours (and mine ) problem really well, because many sight reading gurus recommend reading new tune after tune, piles of hymn books even, to get this good. Lets face it, after a few reads of the same tune your mind is not really learning to read better, it's just become muscle memory. Keep reading new ones that are just... at the limit of what you can read easily, I find Simply Piano "Play Beta"is awesome for doing this. 2. Don't become a parrot playing every tune just as it was written, it is like hearing the same record for ever and ever, who can like this? Well some people apparently, but not me. This is a big problem if you play popular hits, because everyone, including me, loves to hear a tune or song we love played so we hear the familiar bits we love exactly, if that makes sense! So for point 2, learn to improvise - Lisa has some good lessons on this, which is why I'm on this channel, but really you can check out lessons for lesser known tunes or blues and Jazz, where we really never need to sound the same ever again. Hope this helps!! PS I'm doing all this 2 years in on the piano, and the sight reading is really working for me, way better than many years just memorizing one difficult tune after another on the classical guitar. Now I don't play any of those classical guitar tunes, whereas if I had learned to read superbly instead then I would have something to last the rest of my life.

What you've been saying before 3:40 has a lot in common with exercise: you may not feel that you want to do it, but once it's done, you're so glad you did it, and you reap the benefits of being fitter the next time you try it. Also, as with exercise: consistency is important -- keeping at it -- and the more you do it, the more you want to do it because competence feels good (while being rusty doesn't).

Thanks, Lisa. As a "re-beginner", it's been motivating to take some of your riff ideas, and watch my hands separate again. Plus, taking off from one of your riffs, and developing an expanded right hand accompaniment to a left hand chord progression you've demonstrated, it's motivating to see the right hand develop a smoothness, along with the chord changes. You make everything so approachable, with a "you-can-do-this" attitude that is truly infectious. Thanks so much!!

Thanks for the tips! I've been studying for about a year and personally am fascinated by the mindfulness and also mental health aspects of practicing. I wish we talked more about these aspects of practice (how not to let stress get in the way of playing, etc). Sitting at the piano I constantly reflect how it just wants you to let everything else go and just be in the moment with the keys and the music. Definitely beneficial to my mind during and after practice :)

I'm learning Waltz on A minor by chopin, Moonlight sonata, camp of the Gypsies and Alla Turca. My struggle is memorizing the songs. I basically had to teach myself how to play piano again after suffering three heart attacks and a stroke five years ago. My husband bought me the app. Piano marvel and a electric keyboard to relearn piano. My husband and kids have been a great support for me learning. My next step is to memorize the songs. Also, my back hurts really bad after just a half an hour of practice. I practice an hour plus in the morning and afternoon and before bed. Thank you for your videos. I actually have learned a lot from them. I'm turning 60 this year and my goal is to play 8 songs by heart in front of my family.

I have been playing for 12 years and I have trouble staying motivated to practice on my own. I started playing when I was eight years old because my father talked me into it. I watched other people play piano so well and it motivated me. I really wanted to be able to play pieces like the Flight of the Bumblebee at ease to grasp that feeling professional pianists get almost like being able to fly and emulate that sublime feeling in their own way. The sight reading part while playing at the same time always has been a struggle. I have trouble looking up while playing. I always find myself looking down so my fingers don't miss a note or so I don't fall. I may have perfect pitch but I do struggle a lot with learning pieces like Choros No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 by Frédéric Chopin, or The Turkish March (Rondo alla Turca) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (which I already know how to play but have trouble maintaining the right tempo and practiced the piece for months). I chose these songs because they struck a certain part of my soul that resonated with me really well, as well as the fact I genuinely really wanted to be able to play these pieces for myself. It has been nearly a month since I last played piano. I gave myself the excuse that I was really just taking a break to deal with the actual mental problems I was going through without actually trying to practice. The fact I have an old Yamaha piano keyboard that doesn't sound anything like what a true grand piano sound should be. Also, my parents are trying to renovate our house which is having so many problems and my parents cannot afford to buy a baby grand piano. Renovations and constructions can always go over budget regardless. I tend to let my mental, emotional, and physical problems stop me from playing piano. I used to not like sight reading and sometimes I do like reading scores I find interesting. I am learning how to write scores and compose for other instruments all by myself since I don't have anyone to teach me but myself. I struggle to learn things on my own even if it's something I don't always like or feel comfortable with. The things I really love doing don't always feel comfortable. I have trouble forcing a specific part of my mind to embrace the discomfort in any given situation (like getting yourself to get up at 6am every morning to go on a run even if you don't want to, knowing it will help you physically get in shape). Even though, recently, I found a piano instructor to help me become conservatory-ready (which is one of my personal goals) and to help me overcome these challenges. The time management parts and the rest, I can deal with. That is just the tip of the iceberg for me. The rest is too personal for me to disclose. That is my current struggle. Any suggestions, feedback, and constructive criticism would be really great and help me a lot.

My practice session yesterday was the worst I had in the last months. Just a chain of mistakes, nothing worked, even songs I could usually play with closed eyes were terrible and filled with mistakes. But well, lots of room for improvement, isn't it. What keeps me off track from learning the piano is too much thinking of housework that needs to be done at home. It’s like “ok I’m gonna sit down and try to practice the keyboard 🎹 now” and then you’ll realize, oh I still have to hang the clothes, oh I havent done the dishes, oh I need to vacuum, oh I need to help my son with his homework. But you’re right, every one has five minutes. There will always be excuses along the way but you have put them aside if you really have a goal. If there’s a will, there’s a way! :)))))))

The best thing to be motivating is finding a good teacher, becausa a good teacher gives you weekly goals and helps you to correct problems that otherwise you don't even notice and are getting bigger and bigger roadblocks. Someone says to make a planning, I tried it and backfired because I started to miss the deadlines I set on the plan, and started to look too much as work, and because I didn't find what kind of error I was making.

For me, I have been playing since I was 5, I loved to play for a couple of 3 years and then I was like, busy and unmotivated, I was lazy. However every time I go to piano, I play very well still but my parents said, “You play great, you’re teacher says you played amazingly, but you can do SO MUCH MORE if you practiced! Trust me sweetie.” I was like hmm maybe.. but I gave up, my best friend loves my piano, she gave up soccer to try piano at this year and I feel embarrassed, but I taught her the notes and everything I’ve learned when I was younger. So I practiced now 1 hour or more a day, I realized piano is my talent and is should embrace it.

Lisa, I am retired military and as an added element, I have PTSD. I have always had attachment to certain styles, genres, and specific songs. In high school I was a pretty good drummer; from Bass, Snare, rototoms, and the complete 8 - 10 piece trap set. Now back to the moment at hand. I have been attempting to teach myself the piano for a few years now because I wanted to play music the is usually complete from a lead instrument. My motivation is cultivated from the love of music and the love of Piano and Guitar, as well as, an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety stemming from depression and PTSD. I have song books of Ludovico Einaudi, David Neveu, The Beatles, Christmas, and a couple or few others. Mt adversary, other than time, is the menacing challenge to transfer sight reading into hand coordination. Tip, tricks, and suggestions all welcome. Thank you

Hey Wanderer! That's a super-common challenge, and it will get better with practice. I've always struggled with sight-reading as well. I think some people are naturally better at it than others. But that doesn't mean you can't improve! We have a free 4-lesson course on sight reading that might help: www.pianote.com/sight-reading-made-simple The biggest tip is to take things slowly and make sure you're practicing them the RIGHT way. Without mistakes. That builds up good muscle memory and makes a huge difference over time. Thanks for sharing and good luck!

Maybe if I can change that association and look for good feelings, it’ll be better. I feel forced to learn the piano because of my school so I don’t really have an internal motivation! It’s hard to practice! Takes so much focus and energy!
