Cravings: After nearly two years on the WFPB lifestyle, the cravings are minimal. BUT! If I want something sweet, I do not allow myself to buy anything. I have a cupboard filled with baking ingredients (holidays, after all!!), and if I REALLY REALLY REALLY need something, I must bake it. No buying. Just baking. Surprising how the thought of getting everything out and making cookies and cleaning up cookie-mess quickly eliminates the desire to eat them. Cheers!😁

@G M R Be careful with the alfafa whose seeds are not smooth and can keep microbes in the tiny hollows! For the other seeds, no problem, two rinses a day and for the broccoli, I consume them after two days of germination, this is where they contain the most micronutrients. Sprouting, WFPB for 6 years and free from a nasty cancer!

I learned that cooked potatoes are important. Just had a baked sweet potato. After it was cooked I added a little flax seed oil, herbs and cooked garlic. Yes, I will have cooked foods sparingly. Will focus on being sure that over 50% of my daily diet is raw. No more cooked oil of any kind. I'm also juicing every day.

I tried all the diets. Usually two weeks and I was done either the exception of WW which lasted about six months. Went whole food plant based over five years ago and except for an occasional processed vegan food cheat I’ve stuck with it. The weight just came off while never being hungry. It took a couple of months to get over the cravings but all those are gone and I love the way I cook and eat now.

I have been on a vegan diet for about six months now. Mostly. I used up some remaining cheese and fish rather than throw out good food. And I promised myself at the beginning that I will NOT force myself to be 100% compliant from the get go, but would allow myself the occasional non-vegan stuff if I'm eating out and there are no vegan options whatsoever. Then I will have fish or eggs rather than starve. I chose this more relaxed approach because over ten years ago when I tried going vegan, I was very strict and ended up feeling deprived. I could never enjoy treats at work, and it was hard to find vegan friendly shops or restaurants. I ended up quitting because it was that hard to be 100% compliant. I learned from that, and it has made a huge difference to not aim to be PERFECT. Because we humans are not perfect. And circumstances can suddenly change. Aiming for 95% compliance, I was about 90% vegan compliant at the start, and for the past three months it's been virtually 100%, with just a couple of non-vegan meals. This relaxed approach is the very reason I've been able to keep it going so long, and will continue mostly vegan for the rest of my life. It helps that I haven't told anyone I've gone vegan, so I'm not getting snarky comments or pressure from anyone - either for going vegan OR for "failing" to be 100% vegan. The bottom line: don't try to be perfect and you won't feel like a total failure when you "fail" to meet a 100% target. This may be a big factor in why so many people drop out altogether - thinking it has to be all or nothing. Allowing some realistic, pragmatic flexibility will make it a lot easier to stay with a mostly vegan diet for the long haul.

In the beginning it was hard to handle pressure from others. I managed but always felt tired by it. Sometimes I thought that maybe I should quit, just because of all the trouble of not finding food in restaurants, explaining to people what plants are (yup! milk is still not a plant...) and explaining why I don't want to be "flexible" (eat what they are serving just this once). The thought that steered me back on track was always: I am doing this for myself. It is about my physical and mental health. It is about the planet and all the other creatures on it. Me breaking my conscience (I know it is oversized, but I still can't live with breaking it) by betraying myself and my values, will not make me or anybody else happier. Me standing my ground however, will. Also, do I really want to have all those health issues back, just to make others more comfortable? Next year it will be twenty years since I started my journey.

The most restrictive diet i’ve ever been on was Atkins. It made me so miserable & left me feeling stuffed yet hungry all the time. WFPB feels like a walk in the park in comparison. Being Asian (chinese indonesian) w/ the heavy use of spices, i usually just either omit the meat or simply sub w/ firm tofu. If the craving for chips got intense, i’d simply get a single serving chips w/ veggie heavy dip. If the cold sweet craving got intense, i’d blend a smoothie bowl. It’s so good and left me feeling great.

I try to be happy with the feeling of being “peckish” before bed. I feel good that I’m a little peckish, because that means that when I go to sleep my body is ready to burn fat all night when I’m sleeping. I forget who said it, but it is basically "having why-power beats willpower". I've been vegetarian/ mostly vegan over a year now. Having a strong reason WHY does beat willpower. There are many reasons to continue not eating meat & dairy. I think staying informed about the related issues such as health, animal cruelty, environment, etc. helps keep motivation stronger than temptations. Also, enjoying yummy WFPB foods helps and I have healthier alternatives when desired, such as SoDelicious frozen bars. I think a cruelty free diet helps one also live a happier, connected with nature lifestyle.

MIGRAINES. I think the "why" is important with any significant lifestyle change. I went WFPB two years ago in hopes of mitigating chronic migraines, about 15-20 a month. Immediately, they reduced to 5-6/month, and my neurologist suggested a CGM to monitor blood sugar although my tests always come back in the normal range (I'm also underweight). I was able to correlate an abnormal insulin sensitivity issue (blood glucose spikes) with those remaining migraines. Once I shifted to lower GI WFPB, I've reduced them to ZERO! No food is better than being pain free!

Usually evening hunger is due to not eating enough during the day. If I can’t resist, it’s frozen blueberries or sunflower seeds that have to be shelled. I am actually allergic to the protein in milk, so ppl don’t force dairy on me (cheese seems to be in everything these days!). Some of my vegan friends have told ppl they are allergic to dairy, to stop others from forcing animal products on them. So sad that doctors don’t tell their patients the truth about the benefits of a WFPB diet. Good video…staying true to eating habits is a real problem.

It’s a life changer.. nothing has worked for so many people and myself but the ones who follow it end up loosing all the weight without any effort at all and keep the weight off and off all medications and staying healthy. It’s a Low fat WFPB way of eating.. stay on a 50/50 plate and you will see the results in no time.. it took me less than a year to lose 73 pounds!! I was taking different types of medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, fibromyalgia and not one pill but a few different types of pills for chronic migraine headaches as well and now I’m off all medications and I’m 47 years old and feel better now than when I was in my 20s.. I’m loving my new life and never ever turning back to my old self! The key is staying low fat which is also no added oils so don’t cook with oils, no vegan processed foods or vegan junk foods, no refined sugars and while you’re in the weight loss process stay away from nuts and avocados.. once you lose the weight if it doesn’t affect your weight you can eat some nuts, seeds and avocados but keep it very minimal like eat it sometimes. Keep the foods as natural as possible.. I highly recommend you read these books.. The starch solution and Your body in balance.. also if you haven’t yet I recommend you follow Plantiful Kiki you learn so many great tips from her and her friend Hannah! My mom used to have out of control T2 diabetes. Well, after 4 years on a low fat whole food starch based diet, with fruits and vegetables (and the very occasional egg or fish) I performed a glucose tolerance test on her yesterday. Her highest number was 160mg/dL. That was after 150 grams of PURE glucose syrup cut with water by 50% on an empty stomach. Heck, I'm not diabetic (a1c of 4%) and I peaked at 165mg/dL, after the test. Within 2 hours, my mom's blood sugar level was 80mg/dL, and mine was 77mg/dL within 1 hour. Carbs do not cause diabetes. In fact, they are the sure for it;)

Excellent show as usual. One major point that I think is WRONG: 'cravings do NOT have to do with a nutritional deficiency'. I have found that if I start craving salty & fatty foods, that I am probably short on mineral salts (magnesium, potassium, calcium etc salts - NOT table/sodium salt). I find that if I have even half a teaspoon of mineral salts (also called 'base salts' sometimes) can get me over hectic cravings a lot easier than expected. It takes about 20 - 30 minutes for it to get into my system enough to be helpful.

A smoothie IS a whole food drink, its not a juice, it helps to break down some fibers and plant parts that may not have happened with 5 seconds of chewing. I have never ate so much fruits and greens for breakfast as when I used to shove them in a blender ever morning. Most people try to eat just a bowl of oatmeal....

It's hard to find certain foods without oil. We did a consult with Dr. Esseltyn over (1) years ago. We see some foods advertised as "healthy" but have all types of oils including palm and loaded with fat. I've seen vegan "butter" with 10gms of fat. It's not healthy. Except for vegan Boca veggies burgers which has very little fat the rest of loaded with fat. Many people fail because it involves cooking and not everyone is motivated. If there were more options of pre made food that was healthy would help. If I did not cook for my husband or for myself he would not be able to manage. What we do is once in a while we will have a tuna, aslice of pizza or baked/ grilled chicken or turkey. We eat vegan 95% of the time. Labwork results for us have shown big improvement. We try very hard. Thumbs up.

44:31 kimchi without added sugar I do the same thing. People seem to love foods with sugar, but I avoid them because I find it makes food taste 'dirty'. Kimchi with sugar is disgusting to me, as are beans with sugar or -when I was still eating animals- smoked salmon with sugar. I find sugar just as disgusting as vinegar. Bwerk. I remember that, as a child, I found red cabbage and carrots also disgusting. Now I know why: people were adding sugar to them. Cooking for myself, I find I love them to death. The difference seems to be that I don't add sugar.

A pity you couldn't even bother choosing only vegans in your list. Even choosing someone born in the 1800s as an example who was never vegan it would appear. Knowledge and life expectancy has dramatically improved since that person died, noting he lived beyond what one would expect having been born in the 1800s. The other thing is being on any diet doesn't create immortality, if you have this perfect diet that causes one to definitely live to 100 I am all ears.

@@annoyedaussie3942 It's just 12 people I remember growing up with back in the day. I could have picked people from the 1800's or made the list longer but I don't want to clog up the site. It's just a short paragraph to get people to think and then they can make a choice. I don't think there is any person that is vegan, maybe 95%, even Dr. Ellsworth Wareham would tell people he was a vegetarian or sometimes a vegan depending on what mood he was in, but actually he was a regular consumer of fish so he was an omnivore like all centenarians.

I have never found anyone to address my problem, which is not being able to eat enough calories. I have silent reflux, so eating tons of oils, nuts, seeds, coconut and extra fat is not an option as this increases reflux. Eating really large meals is also not an option as this also increases reflux. I already eat 4 meals a day so I do not know if I can fit in another one as these 4 fill up the day already. I need nonfat yoghurt and egg whites just to keep the protein and calories decent. Grains, vegetables and legumes are already real high. I barely hit 1500 calories. Any ideas anyone?

Really annoying that the standard advice is to eat too much with phrases like, “if you’re an endurance athlete…” as the opening remark. You probably aren’t an endurance athlete. If you’re a sedentary person, try three pounds of vegetables and three pounds of starch as your baseline plan. Many will be surprised how little they need to add to this template (from fruit would be a good idea) to have the energy they desire without gaining weight. You’ll know if you should add a few hundred calories - you’ll feel sluggish and won’t feel like moving around. And if that’s the case, four or eight ounces of fruit is a nice, manageable unit to figure out where you should be as far as what and how much to eat in a day. Our caloric expenditure doesn’t vary that much from day to day. So this is a clever way to dial in your requirements without taking huge steps backward. Many people tell me they gain weight on a healthy diet and I have to think it’s because they’re eating 3,000 calories of starch but only burning 1900 or 2100 calories. A very sedentary person might only need 1800 (some people even less) calories for the day. Three pounds of vegetables and three pounds of starch will be around 1650 calories or so. So thinking of it as one pound of vegetables and one pound of starch (potato and beans) per meal is quite helpful - maybe beans for one meal and potato for the other two. Hope this helps.

It is possible to have cravings because the body wants nutrients. When I went vegan, I craved spinach and beetroot rather than fatty of sweet things. I suspect it's because I had been deficient in specific nutrients that are found in those specific vegs. There's also pica - a craving for non-foods, often due to mineral deficiencies. I know someone who craved eating plaster off walls - they had a mineral deficiency. I'd read of other such cases. So the real question is, are you craving comfort food or something that the body recognises as filling nutrient deficiencies. Animals seek out salt licks because they crave certain minerals and instinct leads them to seek out such sources. Why would humans be any different? BTW, I don't crave any foods now, because my diet is heaps better than it's been for years. The cravings just seem to disappear on a vegan diet, because such a diet provides way more micronutrients than the average Western diet.

Easy enough! Use any plant based milk in your coffee. Many options so just need to keep looking until you find one you like. Also, it is easy to sauté in water if you get the right pan and utensils. Wooden spoon or spatula are great if you have a thick bottomed stainless steel pan and are careful not to use excessively high heat. Or uses a high quality nonstick pan. After a while, you will find that butter tastes greasy and oily foods will upset your stomach ( a warning from your body, hahah). Many people use instant pots, pressure cookers, simple toaster ovens and air “fryers” to get the crisp mouth feel for veggies like potatoes, yams, etc. Good luck to you!

Consider being vegan for 3 weeks of the month. So, not eat eggs when you're not on your period. For sustainability, for a lifetime, it's an easing in. I mean some folks can dive in :100: but for the rest of us if that's the blocker, just accept it. Also, at least for me, the period cravings are usually only 2-3 days. So, 90% vegan is far better. The mindshift from "I'm vegetarian" to "I'm whole food plant based" means no more cheese, milk, and eggs just because they're easy. Also, even if nothing changes for you, that's ok! It's about the trying and that's enough!

I lived in Asia. One way to make yummy tofu is to take firm or very firm and drain away water. Put it on a flipped over plate and use a smaller plate on top. Put a weight like a can, on top of the top plate. Let set for 30 minutes. You could also buy a tofu press. After pressing, cut into desired pieces, soak it 30 minutes in your desired marinade (if any) and freeze until frozen. When you dethaw it will have a meaty texture. I just heat it in a skillet with the sauce. 😋
