I heard a story from one of USSR military that when he was young and served in the army one of soldiers was guarding a hangar with MIGs, and he was curious about the planes, so he climbed up into one plane's cockpit and started to press different buttons randomly and he pressed (pulled?) an eject button somehow so he was smashed into hangar's roof. And they later ordered to clean his blood from it.

I find the self-test screens interesting. What does the "max 40 second" text actually mean? Is it "Don't worry, this won't take longer than 40 seconds" or, "If this takes longer than 40 seconds, something has gone seriously wrong"? A bit of ambiguity there!

I'm quite surprised the GPS doesn't maintain its own small battery and almanac to reduce that first fix time. Although I suppose you never just "get in and go" so the 5-12 min cold start doesn't matter so much.
@alergicgamer2711
@alergicgamer2711 11 ай бұрын
Although it may seem like a good idea to just ,,carry" the alignment from one flight to the next it isn't really that good. The inertial navigation, once it aligns it locks its parameters for the duration of the flight - because we would later trust it to guide us back to the ground even without GPS available). That means after some time, like any other system, the IRS will ,,drift" ever so slightly. The manuals usually show the drift to be about 6-10nm after 5 hours of flight. Arriving back on the ground and aligning the system again (by cycling it off and then on) resets this drift back to it's initial value. To sum up - it seems counterproductive to align the system every time the aircraft is powered, but it's actually recommended to realign it each flight to keep it precise, although I suppose not every company has such high turnaround times to constantly cycle the system.
@Veritas-invenitur
@Veritas-invenitur 11 ай бұрын
@@alergicgamer2711I’m a bit surprised that alignment is done with the instrumentation cold. Typically, high precision electronics should be calibrated and programmed after warmup. The drift also surprises me as high accuracy and high precision typically has very low drift that is known and compensated for with minimal uncertainties. But, I don’t work in the aviation industry.
@alergicgamer2711
@alergicgamer2711 11 ай бұрын
@@Veritas-invenitur I also don't ,,work" in the industry. The values that I've used are carried from the aircraft manufacturers' manuals - as an electronics technician by education I'm very much inclined to believe what's said in those manuals. Should you mention the temperature aspect - the modules are said to work fine down to -10 degrees Celsius, so I would assume that the warmup period takes place during the BITE test (the ,,On Bat" light that extinguishes shortly after power up)
@Veritas-invenitur
@Veritas-invenitur 11 ай бұрын
@@alergicgamer2711 As someone who works with NIST primary electrical standards, I am also very inclined on believing what is stated in manufactures manuals. I’m speculating based on the manufactures procedure, the short warm up time, and the need to align with every startup, that these nav systems have a nasty 90day drift. These systems are probably designed around getting up and running fast, rather than to stay accurate and precise over the long term.

While there may be some variations in procedures between airlines, the standard practice in the aviation industry is for the flight crew, including the pilots, to power up the aircraft, perform pre-flight checks, and start the engines. Aircraft mechanics primarily focus on maintenance and repair, and to ensure that the aircraft is airworthy for flight.

I wish these kinds of super utilitarian interfaces would come to consumer electronics and software. Very well engineered, with function and reliability above all else. Nowadays consumer interfaces tend to be a buggy and bloated mess.

@@NACS2023 I wasn't so much referring to the startup procedure itself, it would 100% be annoying to do this everyday with every machine, especially since the amount of learning required to memorize everything. My comment is about the style of the interface. No flashy touchscreens filled with stylized and animated menus that run at 1/4 fps and crash every other hour. Just metal panels filled with high quality switches that don't break after a year of use and displays with sharp text.

What amazes me is that this is exactly the same as the FBW A320 process, they put so much work into making every button and every sound exactly the same, all for free

it sure is crazy how anyone who uses the likes of FBW or Fenix could just go ahead and potentially start up and fly one of these planes for real.

The first after switching Service-Bus on would / should be to switch the cockpit Dome-Light to bright and to check the initial settings, check for foreign or forgotten objects and not to play in the dark... Technicians like us do it every day to give the plane to the crew.

Found some more questionmarks... Adirus inside a hangar almost never make sense, except for some tests where some Air-Sensors are needed. Starting sequence of adirus includes waiting for the "On Bat"-Light to extinguish. BTW: Triple chime: Fire warning / master warning test. Triple click: FMGCs landing capability upgrade.

@@BackSledge_Berlin ...Right,quiet hangar,no secutity,no crew,no supervisor....wide open door with ext stairs docked ,...wrong- from cold dark to startup sequence,or in a hurry...hmm...interesting...no ground supervisor that allow's you to even get close to commercial Airplane,alone....could this be a example of clearance missuse? @hemfri07 Alone in a dark hangar is not uncommon. For example when I prepare the aircraft for being towed outside to hand it over to the flight crew after a night of maintenance. There is no supervisor, no security. It's a normal every day task. Batteries (or when still ext pwr connected complete power) on, checking the brake accu. If needed yellow hydraulic pump on for a few seconds to charge the accu. For the pump you will need full external elec power because running the apu isn't allowed in buildings. Some guy opens the hangar doors, another comes with the towing tractor. Connect the tractor to the nose gear, remove the ladder, the ext pwr cable and the chocks. As soon as the aircraft is out of the hangar I start the apu to run the packs for air conditioning, switch the nav lights and the beacon on and only when on final position the adirus can align without issues. The a/c must not move and the sky is visible for the multimode-receiver seeing the gps satellites. I think the video is for the video only because technically most of it makes absolutely no sense inside a dark hangar.
