This was so helpful! In a group of novice canoers, we were the only ones who didn't capsize. Steering was hard work, and I used the brake a lot around kayaks and tubes and for hard turns. Thank you!

(continued) hyper-stimulate balance control. 3 sets of 30 seconds. The last set looking forward down river. 10 minutes later a 4th set of 30 secs looking into the water for obstructions, turtles, fish, the contents of a previous cane's contents because L-R trim became upset. These 4 sets of reflexive vestibular system hyperstimilation will 99% assure you of not tipping. The problem is when fun & games times is swamped canoe races properly trained paddlers have a hard time allowing to gunnels to move off stabile. My college partner-gymnast could do 1 & 2 arm handstands on the bow deck in choppy lake water and our passenger and I easily kept the gunnels level without being asked or thinking about it. A kinesiologically proper and effective stroking patterns decrease the undue strain caused by poor technique, and will allow all day paddling without soreness or injury. If you start to hear (feel) your shoulder complaining, you'd best listen. It's a sign of cumulative aggravant forces. Supraspinatus tendinitis is very unpleasant and slow to rehab. Best to tuck that elbow in along the ribs and while keeping the hand above the gunnel keep a full grip, especially along the little finger squeezing into the muscles of the palm. Palm always facing the canoe, never thumb down palm facing backwards. Dr. O. When an injured paddler has miles to go, only proper technique will get him there.

The bottom hand positioning below the funnel, and it's grip are problematic. You fail to demonstrate top hand push, proper hand above the funnel, elbow tucked into ribs. This puts you in a repetitive internally rotated shoulder(glenohumeral jt.) while abducted combined with the absence of a full ulnar-side grip ( little finger side of hand firmly grasping, which creates reflexes to properly engage all 4 of the shoulder girdle "rotator cuff " muscles to seat and stabilize the G-H joint).Your repeated dynamic posturing of the shoulder in internal rotation while actively abducting places undue stress on the supraspinatus and its kinematic partners the upper trapezoids and deltoid. Soreness and irritation are likely to follow. You nicely mentioned trim relative to bow to stern, but most importantly left to right trim keeping the gunnels level by use of head on neck, neck on body stabilization efforts. Bow thwart is wide to allow the bowman to compensate. Level L-R trim also affects tracking. Knees locked heels on the keel arms and head raised to the sky, and gently tip the canoe. Control using your position awareness and muscular control. 30 seconds. The looking up vertically positions the inner ear's vestibular components to reflexively hyper
