My kids have now entered the world of DIY costume making and wanted to know how to incorperate burlap in their designs. Since I have no background knowledge in the matter, I decided to seek guidance from good old "KZbin University." Thank you for posting this! Hi Kelly,no need to apologize about the glare. Today it’s not there. And you do look better. Gee,you rock, look wonderful girl. It’s a good idea stiffening burlap, if using it is too limp, making DIYs not fun. Stiffening it will help a lot. Thanks for your idea see later🌹♥️

I use the white glue method to stiffen doilies into bowls. I cover the shape, bowl, vase, etc, with plastic wrap, place the doily over the shape, paint on glue mixture, and leave for 24-48 hours. I never thought about stiffening burlap before making the project. How much easier to make a Christmas angel!!!

♥️I purchased a few burlap coffee bean bags that have amazing print on them, hesitated to cut them for a project due to fear of fraying. I’ll give this a try and a few other suggestions I’ve researched and see what works best for project.
@Sandy-oe5mh

You can paint a glue border around the part you want to save then cut through the middle of the stiff area. That will help to keep it from fraying, but won't alter any print on the bags.

Hi Kelly, I work with polymer clay and when I use foil to cure it leaves a shiny spot where the clay touches the foil. That's why it's recommended to use parchment paper. It can also be reused many times, so it's cost effective. Also use it for ironing perler beads, baking cookies, getting cake or brownies out of pans, and for making patterns. Just don't use craft parchment for food, cross contamination ya know.

Great video! I've never done this with burlap, but have you tried any options with cheap fabric starch instead? Not the expensive "stiffener" but the liquid starch you can get for like $3 at Walmart. I was just thinking about paper mache, which essentially requires the same process (wet with stiffener, let dry). I didn't know if you could get the same results that way, or if there was a difference in the finish.

Another advantage when stiffening the burlap is when you want to paint it or use paint pen on it, it will not soak into the burlap. I figured that out when making my own leaves for a fall banner that I painted on!

Thank u for sharing the tip! Btw, the white and teal lumber wallpaper u use in ur intro-- ending, where did u get that? I LOVE it!! If it's real wallpaper, please let me know who makes it. I'd love to buy some for my Sr Apt if it's the removable kind. I'm redecorating my lvg rm in shades of teal, black, with few accents of other colors but not overwhelming. I can't put nails in the cream colored walls, must use Command strips or J hooks for the first time...yuk and terrified my only expensive canvas painting will fall off the wall and get destroyed. I'm not rich, but saved up for this pic long ago as it just pulled me in when I saw it. It's a 24x36? Thomas Kinkaid, "Aspen Chapel, signed by him, numbered, gallery proof and professionally highlighted, it's beautiful when it starts getting dusk as if the lights come on in the church. I'm not a fan of his work, but this one spoke to my soul. Anyway, I want a softer look. Was planning on using some burlap in places for a more French Country--regular country feel. Not farm feeling, just a little rustic with the French country. Thanks again. I have allergies, so I wear a mask around burlap or things that frays off alot. Blessings, L :)

Mix Portland Cement with water to a cake batter consistency, wet the burlap with water well then put it the cement mud and work that into the burlap. How much cement for how much burlap? That will take sperimentin with little pieces. Cement wont stick to most plastic, like bags and 2 mil drop cloths so drape a test piece on flat and some on curves. Search on 'fabric cement pot'. After 24 hrs, it should be gard but also have some flex and return aka bounce-back. You can add chicken wire to the wet cement-cloth on both sides and paint-brush thin mud over that (never go thick on the cement) to make it stronger and add plies --- it gets strong enough for furniture making. That's another way to stiffen burlap. Brushed down, the cloth texture comes through. Put dye in the cement, you get a base color, maybe dye can be painted on that while still wet, a flat roller would only touch contour tops but that's true when using glue stiffening too.

@@KellyBarlowCreations you can stiffen any fabric by soaking it in liquid starch. You can also use it to attach fabric to your walls in a rental unit and it peels right off. If it works on walls, you could probably use it on other items as well.
